The institute is named after late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi and was founded in the year 1991. It is one of the top institutes which is run by the Government of Kerala. . This Institute is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Thiruvananthapuram. The College campus is spread over an 87-acre area. This college is approved by AICTE.
This college offers various courses for students in B.Tech

Students are admitted on the basis of the scores in the KEAM and the Class 12 marks. Rank list of the students is prepared on the basis of the scores obtained and students have to go through the KEAM counseling. Based on the availability of seats and the cut off, candidates are offered seats in their desired specialization.
NRI admission is possible in this College, authority has reserved 15% seats for NRI/PIO Students under DASA/CIWG Quota.
In RIT, Kottayam, 63 seats are reserved for NRIs and among them 5% for CIWG and rest are for DASA.

Students have to clear their 10+2 exam with 65% marks with the main subjects as Math, Physics, and Chemistry to get admission in this college. Valid score of JEE Mains/KEAM is also required.
