The institute is named after late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi and was founded in the year 1991. It is one of the top institutes which is run by the Government of Kerala. . This Institute is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Thiruvananthapuram. The College campus is spread over an 87-acre area. This college is approved by AICTE.

Students are admitted on the basis of the scores in the KEAM and the Class 12 marks. Rank list of the students is prepared on the basis of the scores obtained and students have to go through the KEAM counseling. Based on the availability of seats and the cut off, candidates are offered seats in their desired specialization.
