NEET Exam Pattern 2027: Questions, Marks, Duration & NRI Student Guide

The official NEET (UG) 2027 exam pattern has 180 multiple-choice questions for 720 marks. The test is conducted in pen-and-paper mode for 3 hours. Physics has 45 questions, Chemistry has 45 questions, and Biology (Botany and Zoology) has 90 questions.

For NRI and USA-based students, the academic exam pattern is the same as it is for students taking NEET in India. However, students taking NEET at an examination centre outside India should pay special attention to the question-paper medium rules explained below.

What Is the Subject-Wise NEET 2027 Exam Pattern?

The official NTA pattern groups the paper into three subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Biology covers both Botany and Zoology and carries half of the total marks.

Important: Botany and Zoology are parts of Biology in the official NTA subject table. They should not be described as two additional standalone subjects when summarizing the official exam pattern.

What Is the NEET 2027 Marking Scheme?

The standard NEET marking scheme is straightforward:

• Correct answer: +4 marks
• Incorrect answer: -1 mark
• Unanswered question: 0 marks

There is no penalty simply for leaving a question unanswered. Therefore, although the paper contains 180 questions with no optional-choice section, a student is not forced to mark an answer to every question.

What Happens If a NEET Question Has More Than One Correct Answer?

NTA provides specific scoring rules for unusual answer-key situations:

Are All 180 Questions Compulsory in NEET 2027?

There are 180 questions in the current NEET paper and there is no optional Section B choice. This is what is generally meant when the current pattern is described as having 180 compulsory questions.

However, students can still leave a question unanswered. An unanswered question receives 0 marks. So, “compulsory” means there is no choice between optional questions, not that a candidate must mark all 180 answers.

How Long Is the NEET 2027 Exam?

The NEET 2027 test duration is 3 hours, or 180 minutes. With 180 questions on the paper, that works out to an average pacing benchmark of about one minute per question, although students should not divide their time equally across every subject or question.

Eligible PwD/PwBD candidates who have a physical limitation to write receive one additional hour of compensatory time, making the examination duration 4 hours, whether or not the candidate uses a scribe.

Is NEET 2027 Online or Offline?

NEET (UG) 2027 is conducted in pen-and-paper mode. Candidates mark their responses on an OMR answer sheet. It is not a computer-based test.

Candidates should follow the OMR instructions carefully. Tearing, defacing, erasing printed information, manipulating responses or otherwise tampering with the OMR sheet can be treated as an unfair-means violation under NTA rules.

In Which Languages Is NEET 2027 Available?

NEET 2027 is offered in 13 question-paper mediums:

English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

The available medium depends on the examination centre. Regional-language combinations are tied to specified locations in India, and the medium selected in the application form cannot later be changed.

Is the NEET Exam Pattern Different for NRI Students?

No. NRI, OCI and internationally educated students take the same NEET paper under the same question distribution, duration and marking scheme as other candidates. There is no separate NEET exam pattern for NRI students.

For a student studying in the United States, the bigger challenge is usually not a different exam pattern. It is the gap between the U.S. high-school science curriculum and the NEET/NCERT syllabus, along with adjusting to an OMR-based, high-volume MCQ exam.

What Should USA-Based Students Know About the NEET Exam Pattern?

Students preparing from the USA should pay particular attention to four parts of the format:

• OMR practice: NEET is a pen-and-paper examination, so students accustomed to digital school testing should practise filling OMR sheets accurately.
• 180-question stamina: The paper contains 180 MCQs in 180 minutes, so timing and concentration matter.
• Negative marking: Guessing without a strategy can reduce the final score because incorrect answers lose one mark.
• Biology weight: Biology accounts for 360 of the 720 marks, making it half of the total paper.

How Should Students Manage 180 Questions in 180 Minutes?

One minute per question is only an average. Some Biology questions may take less time, while calculation-heavy Physics questions may take longer. A practical preparation plan should therefore include timed mixed-subject practice rather than forcing exactly 60 seconds on every question.

• Build accuracy before trying to increase speed.
• Practise moving past time-consuming questions and returning later if time permits.
• Include full 180-minute mock tests in the final preparation phase.
• Practise OMR bubbling as part of the mock test rather than treating it as a separate task.

Did the NEET Exam Pattern Change in 2027?

The simplified 180-question, 3-hour format was already used for NEET 2025 and continued for NEET 2027. Therefore, it is more accurate to say that the 2027 pattern continues the current format rather than describing it as a completely new change introduced in 2027.
