How NRIs in the USA Apply and Sit for NEET

Yes. An NRI, OCI, PIO or eligible foreign student living in the United States can sit NEET if they finish 12 years of school with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Biotechnology) and English, meet the age rule, and register on the NTA portal.

There is no exam centre in the USA. The family picks a city in India or another country NTA lists that year, then plans travel around the admit card, not around a guess.

Can NRIs in the USA sit for the NEET exam?

They can. NRI, OCI, PIO and many US-passport students register the same way an India-based student does: on the NTA website, with a qualifying Class 12 equivalent that includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

The hard part is not the login. It is the centre city, the document set, and the travel week. Families who leave those three items to April usually rewrite the form under pressure. TestPrepKart counselors ask for them while Grade 12 is still running.

NEET exam centres for students living in the USA

NTA does not run a US centre. A student in California or New Jersey still sits the paper in India or in another listed country. The list below is the set US families usually compare. Confirm the live bulletin before you book flights.

Country / region NEET centre? What US families usually do
USA No Pick India or another authorised country. Do not wait for a US city to appear.
India Yes Most used option. Centres sit in major cities. Plan passport validity and who travels with the student.
United Arab Emirates Yes Common when the family already flies Gulf routes or has relatives in the UAE.
Qatar Yes Often easier from the US East Coast than a last-minute India hop.
Singapore Yes Fewer seats. Register early if this is the only realistic city.
Kuwait Yes Used more by Gulf-based families; still listed for US applicants who can travel there.
Saudi Arabia Yes, selected cities Only if a listed city matches the family’s travel papers.
Oman Yes Limited sites. Apply early if you need a specific city.

Decide the country before mock season. Book the flight after the admit-card city is known. Those are two different decisions.

Is the US curriculum accepted for NEET?

Yes, when the transcript can show full-year Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, plus labs. AP, IB, Honors and an accredited state diploma can all work. The cover page of the diploma is not enough.

AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics IB Diploma, preferably HL sciences Honors / state-board diploma AIU equivalence if credits do not map

AP science is accepted as the school subject if it is a full year with labs. IB works when Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taken in enough depth, usually Higher Level. Honors is only a level. It does not replace a missing subject. If you need the subject-by-subject check, use the American curriculum eligibility page.

NEET eligibility for NRI students in the USA

Read that year’s NTA Information Bulletin. Age, accepted boards and centre lists move. This is the checklist TestPrepKart walks parents through before the form opens.

Check What NTA looks for
School subjects 12 years of schooling with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English
Age 17 on or before 31 December of the exam year. No upper age limit in recent bulletins
Who may apply NRI, OCI, PIO and eligible foreign nationals, under that year’s admission rules
Identity Valid passport, or OCI / PIO card where that is the identity document
AIU (if asked) AP, IB or US state-board files that do not map cleanly to Indian Class 12 PCB

Step-by-step on the NTA site

  1. 1. Open the official NTA NEET site for that year. Bookmark it. Do not use a random “apply here” ad.
  2. 2. Create a new candidate registration. Keep the password where a parent can find it.
  3. 3. Fill personal details exactly as the passport reads. A nickname on the form is a later identity problem.
  4. 4. Enter education details from Grade 10 and 12 records, including PCB and English.
  5. 5. Choose an exam centre city in India or another listed country. The USA will not be on the list.
  6. 6. Upload photograph, signature and the documents that year’s form asks for.
  7. 7. Pay the fee. International cards usually work. The fee is not refunded if a field is wrong.
  8. 8. Submit and download the confirmation page. Then watch the city slip and admit card dates.

Required documents for NRIs applying from the USA

The form and later counselling both ask for identity, school records and NRI proof. Collect the folder while Grade 12 is still running. Last-week scans are how families miss the photo spec.

Document Why it is asked
PassportIdentity and nationality on the form and at the centre
OCI / PIO card, if that is the statusShows the category the student is applying under
Class 10 marksheetDate of birth and name check
Class 12 marksheet or equivalent transcriptPhysics, Chemistry, Biology and English
NRI status certificateNeeded later if the family wants an NRI-quota seat
US address proofShows the student lives in the United States
Photograph and signatureForm, admit card and counselling file
AIU equivalence, if askedWhen the US credit pattern does not map to Indian Class 12 PCB

Is the NEET syllabus the same for Indian and NRI students?

Yes. NTA sets one paper. An NRI in Texas sits the same Physics, Chemistry and Biology as a student in Delhi. There is no “US version” of the syllabus. NCERT Class 11 and 12 is the book list.

Subject Class 11 (units) Class 12 (units) What the paper still asks
Physics 5 5 Mechanics through modern physics, including chapters AP Physics C often skips
Chemistry 14 16 Physical, organic and inorganic in one paper. Inorganic tables are the usual US gap
Biology 5 5 NCERT wording and diagrams. AP Biology reasoning does not replace that memory work

Class 11 Physics still includes kinematics, laws of motion, gravitation, thermodynamics and waves. Class 12 still includes electrostatics, current electricity, optics and semiconductors. Chemistry and Biology follow the same NCERT chapter order. If a chapter is missing from the US year, it is still on the paper.

NEET application fee for NRI applicants

The form fee depends on where the student sits, not on where the family lives. Confirm the rupee figure on the live bulletin. Ranges below are the band families budgeted from recent years.

Candidate Centre Approx. fee
NRI / OCI / foreign (General) India Same as Indian General, about ₹1,700-₹1,800
NRI / OCI / foreign (reserved categories, if applicable) India Same as the matching Indian category, about ₹1,000-₹1,700
Any NRI / OCI / foreign student Outside India International centre fee, about ₹9,000-₹10,500

Points families miss

  • An India centre uses the India fee. An international centre uses the higher “outside India” fee.
  • Pay online. International cards are usually accepted.
  • The fee is not refunded if a name, photo or centre choice is wrong.
  • The official amount is the one in that year’s Information Bulletin, not a screenshot from last March.

NRI quota for MBBS after NEET

A valid NEET score is the exam result. An NRI-quota seat is a later counselling category. NRI, OCI, PIO and some NRI-sponsored candidates can be considered for those seats in many private and deemed colleges, and in a smaller set of government colleges.

Competition on those seats is usually thinner than the open Indian list. Fees are higher. The NRI quota MBBS admission guide covers who can claim the route after the score.

Fees for NRI quota seats

Tuition is usually quoted in USD and varies by college type. These are planning ranges, not an offer letter.

College type Approx. annual NRI fee
Government (limited NRI seats)USD 10,000-25,000
Private medical collegesUSD 25,000-40,000
Deemed universitiesUSD 30,000-60,000

Most families we sit with should budget USD 25,000-60,000 a year for a private or deemed NRI seat, plus hostel, travel and reporting costs. Government NRI seats are fewer and still need a valid score and a clean file.

A US file that actually reached the centre

Names below match families who asked the apply-and-sit question. Scores still depend on the student and that year’s paper.

Michael, Grade 12, Boston

He was on an American high-school program. His parents wanted an Indian MBBS seat and did not know where he could sit the paper, or which scans the form would reject.

He joined the TestPrepKart 2-year NRI NEET program. The counselling desk walked the family through NTA registration, passport and photo specs, and an international centre they could actually reach. Travel was booked after the city was known, not before.

Score: 554 / 720. He sat the paper without a last-week document rewrite, then used counselling for an MBBS seat in India.

The Singapore clip is the same apply-and-sit problem from another time zone: centre city first, then the paper. Open a results year for the wider board.

A NEET plan that can sit beside a US school week

The form calendar and the study calendar have to share the same year. This is the stage list from the source blog, written so a parent can see what this month is for.

Stage What to do
18-24 months out Keep AP, IB or Honors science. Start NCERT PCB on purpose, not as a summer idea.
12-18 months out Finish the NEET chapter order with weekly tests. Do not leave Class 11 holes for Grade 12.
6-12 months out Past papers and timed sets. Speed and negative marking start here.
3-6 months out More full mocks. After each paper, fix the error type, not only the score.
Last month Formula sheets and light mocks. Do not open a new book.
Last 2 weeks Sleep, light revision, and the travel folder: passport, confirmation page, admit card, centre city.

Questions families send before the form opens

Can NRI students living in the USA apply for NEET?

Yes. NRI, OCI, PIO and eligible foreign students living in the United States can register on the NTA portal after 12 years of school with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.

Is the US curriculum accepted?

Yes, when AP, IB, Honors or a state-board diploma includes full-year PCB and English with labs. Ask for an AIU certificate if the credits do not map to Indian Class 12.

Is there a NEET centre in the USA?

No. Choose a centre in India or another country NTA lists that year, such as the UAE, Qatar, Singapore, Kuwait or selected cities in Saudi Arabia.

What documents are needed from the USA?

Passport, OCI or PIO card if that is the status, Class 10 and 12 records, NRI status proof, US address proof, photograph, signature, and AIU equivalence if the school file is uncommon.

Is the syllabus different for NRIs?

No. One paper, one NCERT-based syllabus. Living in the USA does not remove a Class 11 chapter.

What does the application fee cost?

An India centre is charged like an Indian candidate (recently about ₹1,700-₹1,800 General). An international centre is the higher outside-India fee (recently about ₹9,000-₹10,500). Confirm the bulletin.

Do NRI students have a separate MBBS quota?

Yes. After a valid score, eligible students can be considered for NRI-quota seats in many private and deemed colleges and in some government colleges. Annual fees often sit between USD 25,000 and 60,000.
