About KVPY
What is the KVPY Exam
Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana or better known as KVPY is a scholarship program that started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology(DST) of the Government of India.
This program is run by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and aims to encourage the students studying science to take up research in the areas of basic science as a career option. The program is for those students who are highly motivated and talented students who want to pursue their career in science research areas.
It encourages students who want to study science and make a career in science research. Students who crack KVPY get fellowship up to the PHD level or 5 years whatever is earlier.

KVPY Objective
The objective of KVPY program to identify and recognize the students who have aptitude and talent for research and help them to realize their potential and encourage them to take research career in science to ensure their growth for a better research and development of the country.
Curriculum
The KVYP exam curriculum consists of basic science syllabus that students have learned till class 12th. The exam paper consists of 4 sections i.e. physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
KVYP Streams
The KVYP is divided into three streams as given below
1. SA - for students studying the Science stream in class 11.
2. SX - for students studying the Science stream in class 12.
3. SB - for students studying Science stream in the first year of graduation

KVYP Eligibility
All those students who are Indian nationals and want to pursue their research career in basic science in India are eligible for KVPY exams.
The students appearing for the KVPY exam must be studying from class XI to the first year of any undergraduate program in basic sciences. The program is not for students who want to pursue academics under distance learning scheme of any university.
The KVPY scheme is only for Indian students studying in India.
Stream SA: Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2014-15 and having secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board examination.
Stream SX: Students enrolled in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2014–15 and aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. for the session 2015–16 provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination and a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in the 1st year of the undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. during the academic year 2014–15 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics) in the XII Standard Board Examination. In the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. they must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.
KVPY Application Procedure
The application process for KVPY is an online process that consists of three major steps. These steps are as follows
Step 1. Registration.
Step 2. Filling personal and academic details, choosing test centre and uploading photo, signature and other certificates as applicable.
Step 3. Payment of application fees. The application fees will be submitted online only at the KVPY application portal. This can be done either by using a credit card/Debit card/Net Banking or by downloading an e-challan from the application portal. No other mode of payment will be accepted. Once the payment is done successfully and application form is submitted no refund will be done.

Ø For General Category/OBC: Rs. 1000
Ø For SC/ST/PWD: Rs. 500
KVPY Exam Dates
The advertisement for the KVYP fellowship program comes on the Technology Day and second Sunday of July every year in all the leading national dailies. The online aptitude exam is conducted in the month of November and the final interview is conducted in the month of January and February. The answer keys get published after 10-12 days of the aptitude exam.

KVPY Selection of Students
The KVPY exam is for those students studying from class XI to the first year of any undergraduate program in basic sciences. Special committees are set up to screen the applications and tests are conducted at different centers in the country.
To qualify for the KVPY exam, students will have to appear for an online test. This test aims to test the analytical ability and understanding of the students instead of the factual knowledge. Those students who qualify the online test are then called for the final round of face to face interviews.
To get the scholarship, marks of both the aptitude test and interview are considered. The aptitude test holds 75% weightage and the interview holds remaining weightage of 25%.
- Aptitude Test: An aptitude test is conducted in English and Hindi in the month of November each year.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates are called for interview.
KVPY Result Declaration
The results of the online aptitude test are normally declared in the second fortnight of the month of December and the final results are declared in the second fortnight in the month of March.
KVPY Fellowship Rewards
Generous fellowships are provided to the qualified KVPY Fellows up to the pre-Ph.D. level. The KVPY fellows receive an amount of Rs. 5,000 monthly from 1st to 3rd year of B.Sc./ B.Stat/ B.S./ B.Maths/ Integrated M.S./M.Sc. and an annual contingency grant of Rs.20,000.
After three years the fellowship amount is increased to Rs. 7,000 per month during M.Sc./4th & 5th year of Integrated M.S./M.Sc. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 28,000.

Renewal/Continuation of Fellowship
The fellow will have to study science as their stream and maintain an aggregate of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) or equivalent. If the fellow fails to maintain the given aggregate marks, then he will be disqualified for the fellowship program. However, if the fellow achieves an aggregate mark more than 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD), then the fellowship can be renewed from that year onwards.
