JEE Mandatory for DASA / CIWG 2021 - 2022 Onwards
As per the recent notification issued by DASA / CIWG 2019 that from 2021 – 2022 onwards, SAT 2 is no longer valid for getting admission in Premiere Indian colleges like NITs, IIITs, CFIs & SPAs etc.
As per the notification, NRI students are now needed to write JEE Main from 2021 – 22.
Implications:
Class 12th Students (2019 - 2020):
NRI students who are in grade 12th this year (2019) are only eligible for writing SAT 2 for getting admission in NITs and other colleges based on SAT 2 score through DASA & CIWG scheme.
Class 11th & 10th Students (2019):
Students who came in grade 11th this year (2019) will be taking admission in NITs/ CFIs/ IIITs / SPAs in 2021 onwards under DASA / CIWG scheme and therefore, for them, JEE Mains Rank is valid as of now.
Will this prevail?
Clearly, we cannot say much in detail about it. Fact of the matter is that if there is any such notification to be out and implemented, these should be informed to NRI parents at least 3 years in advance.
Parents plan their tenure abroad and their children’s education, particularly when CIWG and DASA have residential criteria of minimum 2 years. In this duration, NRI student must complete his / her grade 11th and 12th from aboard.
Now, this is something for which NRI community was not prepared enough and this notification is more of a bummer.
For now, on DASA's official website, we have only news/notification available and no such circular or official notification can be found. This means that still the brainwork is going on and few changes are expected.
What to do as of now?
So, student who are in grade 11th this year (2019) who were planning to prepare for SAT 2 partially in 11th and then write 12th in 2020 are upset and not ready.
Bottom line is that you cannot risk it, so for now you have 2 years with you. Start preparing for JEE Main. Why?
- This is because as of now we do not have any option than to write JEE Main to get into NITs in India.
- If you prepare for JEE Main this will also help you in preparing for prestigious IITs in India. Once you clear JEE Main you just need to work on Advanced. Hardworking students can get into IITs too.
- Preparing JEE Main will help you in writing SAT 2 later on just in case the order is uplifted and reverted back to SAT 2

DASA 2021 FAQs:
Will DASA Scheme be available in 2021?
Yes, DASA Scheme as well as its subset (the CIWG Scheme) will be available for admissions in the academic year 2021-22. By applying under these scheme, students can take admissions in NITs, IIITs, CFIs & SPAs. The only difference from 2021 is that JEE Mains Rank will be considered valid, not SAT 2.
Will SAT 2 be valid in 2021 for admission under DASA Scheme?
No. As notified on the official website of DASA, SAT 2 Scores or SAT Subject Scores will no longer be valid from 2021 onwards to take admissions under DASA & CIWG Scheme.
What is the benefit of JEE over SAT Subject Test for DASA / CIWG 2021?
The benefit with JEE is that the students who happen to be eligible for JEE Advanced (decided on the basis of JEE Mains Results), can take JEE Advanced Exams to try for admissions in IITs, the most premier engineering Institute in India. The same wasn’t possible with SAT 2 because IITs dont intake students on the basis of SAT 2 Scores.
If students can’t clear JEE Advanced, they can still take admissions in NITs, IIITs, CFIs & SPAs on the basis of JEE Mains Rank.
What is the eligibility criteria for NRI, PIO, OCI candidates under DASA / CIWG 2021?
The eligibility criteria for DASA 2021 & CIWG 2021 will remain the same as it is for 2020 or 2019. There are no changes in the eligibility criteria yet announced officially by DASA.
Students of which grade are eligible to take JEE Mains exam for applying under DASA 2021?
NRI, PIO, OCI Students who are in grade 11th (in 2019) and will be appearing for grade 12th final exams in 2021, are eligible for JEE 2021 to apply under the DASA 2021.
If you are in grade 12th (in 2019), you must be appearing for grade 12th final exams in 2020. Hence you will be giving SAT 2 for applying under DASA 2020.
If in case you wish to take an year extra just for exam preparation, then the year will be 2021 & hence you will have to take JEE Mains to apply under DASA 2021.
Is ‘JEE Mandatory from DASA 2021 onwards’ a final & official circular?
Because DASA released this notification on 4th of April on its official website (https://dasanit.org/). There are 100% chance that this notification is a final one. No detailed circular has been released as of now but as soon as any such updates arrive, you can find them on our website.
Can government withdraw the changes made for DASA 2021?
This is completely unpredictable. But there seems to be less chance that it will be withdrawn.
The NRI, PIO, OCI Students who wish to apply for DASA / CIWG 2021 (& years after 2021) must start preparing for JEE Mains.
Is there any change in the qualifying exam criteria also for DASA 2021-22?
No changes have been made in the qualifying exam criteria for DASA 2021.
Students must have a minimum of 60%, or equivalent, in Grade 12 Exams (of their respective boards) & must have successfully completed Maths, Physics and one of the subjects from (Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Biology) in Grade 11th & 12th.
How should NRI Students prepare for JEE to apply under DASA / CIWG Scheme for 2021?
The applicants must be thoroughly aware of the syllabus & pattern i.e. revolving around the NCERT textbooks for class 11th & 12th. This is because JEE Syllabus is based on the NCERT Text books. The students must also practice using various reference books /online test series/ coaching/ mock tests/ previous years papers in order to crack JEE 2021 for applying under DASA 2021 or CIWG 2021. What will be the JEE Rank cutoff for engineering admissions under DASA / CIWG 2021 Scheme?
The JEE cutoff varies every year because of the percentile system. Hence, the exact cut off can not be mentioned. Every year, JEE cutoff is announced at the time of JEE Result Declaration & it is valid only for that particular year.
Do NRI Students need coaching to clear JEE Mains for admissions under DASA / CIWG 2021?
Based on the tough competition students have in India, it is very necessary for students to make extra efforts to clear JEE Mains or Advanced. In India, when science students enter grade 11th, they take up tuitions or coaching to help them prepare for JEE Mains. Because the JEE Syllabus is based on NCERT Textbooks which are used in Grade 11th & 12th, it also helps them prepare for their school exams / board exams.
Ideally, 2 years of JEE preparation (coachings, previous years questions practice, test series) is needed for students who want to clear JEE Mains. Hence, it is highly recommended for NRI , PIO, OCI Students to take JEE Coachings if they wish to secure a seat in NITs, IIITs, CFIs or SPAs under DASA / CIWG Scheme 2021.

How to submit JEE Rank on DASA Website for admissions in NITs, CFIs?
Observing this pattern of how DASA has been allowing NRI Students to submit their SAT 2 scores through their college board account, there are high chances that from session 2021-22 onwards, NRI Students might be made to submit their JEE Mains Rank to DASA through their JEE Mains account. Any confirmation on this will be updated here soon.
Respected Sir, I wanted to now if Iiit Hyderabad will accept sat 2 and sat 1 score from 2021-22 for undergraduate students.
All CFTI engineering colleges in India will be accepting JEE Main rank from 2021 onwards. This means all institutes who were accepting SAT previously will now accept JEE Main score. Thanks, Team TestprepKart
Hi, My son is in 8th standard in Canada & will be getting citizenship soon. I need some suggestion regarding his admission in IIT / NIT under NRI / OCI quota. Fees is not a primary concern, however which of these options will be easier to get admission considering competition? Will it be better to finish 11th/12th (or even earlier) from India or from abroad? What other factors should we keep in mind for planning?
Dear Parent, I have done some deep thinking on this subject. In my personal view : First its applicable form academic year 2021. So for sure it will not be applicable for your son who is in Grade 12 now and will move to college from 2020 academic year. In future, Only SAT will be replaced by JEE mains. Please note that the competition will still remain with DASA students. So a separate merit list or rank will be taken out for DASA. JEE mains has NO CUTTOFF. Just we need to appear in JEE. SAT has a cutt off of 1800 thats 75%. Only the competition will decide the DASA rank. As you indicated Fees is High for DASA Non CIWG. There are some other points also. I have prepared a 2 page NOTE on this mentioning the Advantages of JEE mains and what the Parents Forum can do. I have circulated among few of my friends here in Doha for opinions and future course of action. If Interested, i can send the same to you. If found useful and some merit you can discuss among your circle. with warm regards Ravi Kumar Bolisetty.
My son just moved to grade 12th and we live in Dubai, i need to know if we also have to write JEE this year under DASA scheme or we are still eligible for writing SAT 2 under DASA.
We are looking for admission in NITs in India through Gulf Quota (CIWG) category. Will this impact us also, your help in this DASA information is highly appreciated. Please let us know ASAP as there is no clarity available on net. Thanks, Rekha.
