KVPY FAQs
Ques: What is KVPY?
Ans: KVPY stands for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and was started by the Department of Science and Technology of Government of India in 1999. The KVPY program is run for Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The program started with an aim to identify and recognize the talent of students who want to pursue their career in research areas in basic science. This program is for studying from class XI to the first year of under graduation with any basic science stream. The students who qualify KVPY exam are eligible for a fellowship stipend during their academics.
Ques: What is eligibility criteria for KPVY?
Ans: All those students who are studying basic sciences and are Indian nationals are eligible for KVPY exam.
- The eligibility for stream SA is that the student should have passed class 10th with science and mathematics and will have to score 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) in the qualifying exam.
- The eligibility for stream SA is that the student should have passed class 10th with science and mathematics with an aggregate of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) and have passed 10+2 with science and an aggregate of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD).
- The eligibility for stream SA is that the student should have passed class 10+2 with science and an aggregate of 60%(50% for SC/ST/PWD) and first year final examination with an aggregate of 60% (50% FOR SC/ST/PWD).
Ques: What is the application procedure for KVPY exam?
Ans: The KVPY application form is filled online and consists of three steps as given below
- Registration.
- Filling personal details and academic details, choosing test centre, uploading photo, signature and other certificates as required.
- Payment of application fees. The application fees can only be submitted online through KVPY portal either by downloading an e-challan from the application portal or by using a credit card/Debit card/Net Banking. Once the payment will be done successfully and application form will be submitted then no refund will be done.
Ques: My name is Akash and I have completed my 10th standard exam in 2017. Am I eligible to apply for KVPY exam?
Ans: Yes, absolutely you are eligible for KVPY exam in stream SA. For this, you must have scored an aggregate mark of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) in mathematics and science subjects in class 10th exam. And the most important eligibility criteria is that you should be an Indian national.
Ques: What is the selection procedure of KVPY fellows?
Ans: Students who apply for KVPY exam will have to go through an online/offline aptitude test that is conducted to check the analytical ability of the student. Students who qualify the online test are then called for a face to face round of interview. Successful candidates are then given the scholarship on combining marks of both the tests. The weightage of aptitude test and the interview is 75% and 25% respectively.
Ques: What is the process of renewal/continuation of KVPY fellowship?
Ans: The fellow student will have to study science as their stream and maintain an aggregate of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) or equivalent. If he fails to maintain the given aggregate marks, then he will be disqualified for the fellowship program. However, if the fellow student achieves an aggregate mark of more than 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD), then the fellowship can be renewed from that year onwards.
Ques: What is the syllabus for KVPY exam for all the three streams?

Ques: How can I prepare for the KVPY Exam?
Ans: The basic rule to prepare for KVPY exam is to clear your basic concept of the curriculum subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Try to clear your concept from NCERT books as most of the questions come from these books only. Try to solve as many KVPY previous year and mock test papers. This will help you to understand the pattern and level of the exam and will help you to identify your opportunity areas. As the saying goes. “Practice makes a man perfect”, so practice diligently to become more accurate and manage time duration.
Ques: Is it possible to avail for KVPY Fellowship along with a merit scholarship?
Answer: No. KVPY does not allow its fellow students to receive any simultaneous fellowship /scholarship from any other source, either government or private. In case they are receive any other fellowship or scholarship, they will have to surrender it to avail the KVPY Fellowship.
Ques: What is the mode of KVPY Exam?
Ans: KVPY exam is conducted in both online and offline mode in English as well as Hindi.
