The top NIT colleges in India for NRI studentsNITs included in this scheme are NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Rourkela, NIT Karnataka Surathkal, NIT Calicut, and NIT Warangal. These universities provide highly competitive B.Tech programs, however, getting admission under NRI is not guaranteed. They should fulfill the requirements of DASA/CIWG/counseling.
The guide has been prepared especially for the Indians who are living outside India, OCI/PIO applicants and foreigners including their families in America for comparing the NIT ranking, seat, fees structure, JEE Main eligibility, cutoffs, and admission process.
Yes. Eligible NRI, OCI/PIO and foreign-national students can seek B.Tech admission at participating NITs through the central DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) scheme. Depending on nationality and eligibility, some students may also have an applicable regular JoSAA/CSAB pathway.
NIT admission for NRIs — at a glance
| Admission route | DASA for eligible NRI/OCI/PIO/foreign applicants; JoSAA/CSAB for applicable regular routes |
|---|---|
| Exam | JEE Main Paper 1 for central DASA B.Tech admission |
| Seat types | DASA Non-CIWG and CIWG (only if the student meets CIWG rules) |
| Next step | Confirm citizenship, overseas schooling, qualifying subjects and category before shortlisting colleges |
Under the 2026 framework, DASA admission used JEE Main ranks and a separate allocation process.DASA quota was supernumerary, the maximum being 15% of the programme-wise intake. A portion of it has been set aside under the scheme of CIWG for eligible children of Indian employees in the Gulf countries.
The scheme is neither a management quota nor a guarantee of direct admissions. The candidate needs to fulfill requirements of nationality, academic record, rank and documentation to gain admission through allocation.

Here are actual Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) B.Tech seat counts from the revised DASA UG 2026 seat matrix. This represents just one programme at each NIT, and not the total number of DASA seats for all programmes. This shows that just a college name alone is not enough for admissions.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| NIT College | CSE Non-CIWG Seats (2026) | CSE CIWG Seats (2026) | CSE DASA Total (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 16 | 8 | 24 |
| NIT Rourkela | 11 | 6 | 17 |
| NIT Karnataka, Surathkal | 16 | 8 | 24 |
| NIT Calicut | 17 | 9 | 26 |
| NIT Warangal | 21 | 10 | 31 |
| MNIT Jaipur | 23 | 12 | 35 |
| VNIT Nagpur | 11 | 6 | 17 |
| NIT Durgapur | 15 | 14 | 29 |
| NIT Silchar | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| NIT Patna | 15 | 8 | 23 |
For example, NIT Warangal listed 21 CSE Non-CIWG seats and 10 CSE CIWG seats, while NIT Silchar listed two and one respectively. This does not establish the probability of admission: demand, rank, category and number of applicants also matter.
Seat matrices can change every year and branch labels can differ. Review the full DASA/CIWG seat matrix for programme-level numbers before filling your choices.
For NRI families, the biggest financial distinction is usually the student’s DASA category. The table below shows the 2026 DASA enrolment fee reference; it is not a college-specific four-year tuition quote. All figures are presented in US dollars for convenient budgeting.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Fee category | Registration Fee (USD) | First-Semester Tuition (USD) | Initial Enrolment Payment (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DASA Non-SAARC | $300 | $4,000 | $4,300 |
| DASA SAARC (eligible category) | $300 | $2,000 | $2,300 |
| DASA CIWG | $300 | About $658 | About $958 |
| Payment | Included in initial enrolment? | What families should budget |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | Yes | $300 in the referenced fee schedule; check refund rules |
| First-semester tuition | Yes | Category-specific figure in the table above |
| Later tuition payments | No | Future semester tuition as officially scheduled |
| Hostel, mess and campus charges | Generally separate | College-specific charges; do not assume a common USD amount for every NIT |
| Travel, insurance and personal costs | No | Family-dependent expenses |
For instance, the non-SAARC advance amount of $4,300 is made up of the registration fee of $300 and $4,000 for tuition for the first semester; it is neither the annual nor the four-year amount. Regarding CIWG, the dollar amount depends on the exchange rate. If the applicant falls under more than one DASA category, then the amount of advance could be different.
Payments will not include hostel, mess, personal expenses, or institute specific fees. The registration fee was non-refundable as per the brochure of 2026. There are different refund policies for tuition. A comprehensive fee structure is available atDASA and CIWG fee structure.

Read the DASA cutoffs and closing ranks guide and our best NITs under DASA cutoff comparison to research realistic choices.
A useful shortlist considers the exact NIT, branch, DASA category, previous closing ranks and budget—not a single advertised cutoff.
Once the colleges have been shortlisted, it is imperative to ascertain whether there is an appropriate admission category. “Living abroad” alone does not suffice to cover all issues of eligibility. The student’s passport, OCI/PIO status, qualifications, and JEE Mains ranking need to be verified.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Applicant profile | Overseas schooling check | Exam & academic check | Seat route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian-citizen NRI | Two qualifying years of education abroad covering Grades 11–12 and passing abroad under 2026 rules | Valid JEE Main Paper 1 rank; required subjects and qualifying marks | DASA Non-CIWG if eligible; CIWG only with Gulf parent eligibility |
| OCI/PIO (I) | Overseas study requirement applies under the specified category | Valid JEE Main rank, subject/marks and OCI category documentation | Category specified by the current brochure |
| Foreign national / OCI/PIO (F) | Do not automatically apply the Indian-national two-year rule; verify foreign-category requirements | Valid JEE Main rank, recognised qualification, subjects and marks | Applicable DASA Non-CIWG foreign category |
| Possible CIWG applicant | Schooling rule still depends on nationality/OCI classification | All DASA academic rules + proof of qualifying parent Gulf employment | CIWG if verified as eligible |
This is a decision-aid for eligibility purposes and not an admission decision-making tool. Use the current DASA brochure and document definitions in making your application.
An Indian national studying outside India can also avail himself of DASA provided he fulfills the criteria regarding nationality and education. In the 2026 DASA scheme, Indian nationals eligible for DASA were required to study outside India for a minimum of two years in Classes 11 and 12 or equivalent, and clear the qualifying examination outside India.
Foreign candidates and OCI/PIO candidates are among those categorized as eligible candidates of DASA, but there is a difference in terms of their categorization. The criteria for 2026 categorize OCI/PIO (I) and OCI/PIO (F), and the overseas study criterion has been prescribed for Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) only.
For B.Tech admission under DASA 2026, the candidate needed Mathematics and Physics plus at least one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science or Biology in the qualifying examination, and 75% aggregate in five subjects or 7.5 CGPA out of 10 under the specified method. A valid JEE Main Paper 1 score and rank was also required.
Academic rules and any institute-specific requirements should always be checked in the active brochure. Read the detailed JEE eligibility for NRI students guide before applying.
DASA and CIWG are related but not identical. CIWG is a seat category within the DASA framework for qualifying children of Indian workers in specified Gulf countries; it is not a general USA-based NRI concession.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Feature | DASA Non-CIWG | DASA-CIWG |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Eligible NRI, OCI/PIO and foreign-national candidates according to category | Eligible NRI applicants meeting qualifying parent Gulf-employment rules |
| Admission basis | JEE Main rank and DASA choice allocation | JEE Main rank and CIWG category allocation |
| Seat provision | Part of programme-wise supernumerary DASA seats | Five percentage points within the up-to-15% DASA seat provision under 2026 rules |
| Parent job in Gulf | Not generally required | Required supporting evidence under the applicable brochure |
| Fees | Non-SAARC/SAARC DASA structure | Special CIWG tuition structure |
The Gulf countries that have been stated within the framework of 2026 include UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The residence of the student in the USA does not necessarily mean that he/she is eligible for CIWG program or ineligible.
For exact category details, read our DASA vs CIWG quota explanation.
Yes for central DASA B.Tech admission under the 2026 rules. Candidates needed a valid JEE Main Paper 1 scorecard and Common Rank List rank. SAT or AP scores did not replace JEE Main in the central DASA allocation process.
Students should distinguish three separate things: eligibility to take JEE Main, eligibility for DASA and eligibility for a particular NIT programme. Passing the examination is not a promise of admission.
An NRI student interested in IITs should also understand that IIT admission uses JEE Advanced, not DASA. Read our JEE Main and JEE Advanced guide for NRI students.
The NIT admission process is easier to plan when it is broken into separate actions. This sequence follows the broad DASA UG workflow and should be checked against the latest official counselling calendar.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Stage | What the student should do |
|---|---|
| Check eligibility | Confirm nationality, OCI/PIO classification, Class 11–12 records, subjects and qualifying examination. |
| Take JEE Main | Appear for the applicable JEE Main paper and retain the scorecard and rank. |
| Register for DASA | Create an account on the official counselling portal when applications open. |
| Pay enrolment fee | Pay the category-specific DASA Enrolment Fee in the permitted form. |
| Upload and verify documents | Submit required certificates and answer verification queries within deadlines. |
| Fill NIT and branch choices | Order college-plus-programme choices according to genuine preference and lock them. |
| Review allotment | Follow round results, willingness/reporting instructions and any payment adjustments. |
| Complete admission | Report to the allotted institute with original documents and pay remaining charges. |
Our DASA registration and application-form guide and DASA counselling guide explain the detailed application and reporting stages.
The optimal NIT for different branches/families can vary. Start by selecting the following as your initial list and compare based on availability of programmes. Next look at departmental details in each campus.
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Preferred branch | NITs worth comparing first | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Rourkela, MNIT Jaipur | Core CSE seat availability, DASA category ranks, electives and placement reports |
| Electronics and Communication | NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Calicut, VNIT Nagpur | ECE vs VLSI-specialisation programme names, laboratories and branch outcomes |
| Mechanical Engineering | NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela, NIT Calicut, NIT Durgapur, MNIT Jaipur | Manufacturing labs, design opportunities, core recruiting and branch cutoffs |
Consider total cost and academic fit too. A branch that suits the student can be a better long-term choice than selecting a college purely by its overall rank.
USA-based NRI families should confirm foreign-school recognition well before counselling. The DASA 2026 brochure recognized 12-year high-school diplomas from accredited US schools, subject to the prescribed academic and documentation requirements.
Ask the school for complete official transcripts, graduation evidence and a letter confirming the required grade-level study. Where applicable, verify AIU equivalence and provide any prescribed grade-to-percentage conversion from the appropriate authority.
Under the 2026 DASA baseline, Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates had an overseas-education condition involving both Classes 11 and 12 or equivalent and passing the qualification abroad. Families should not assume that moving abroad only for Class 12 satisfies the rule.
| Illustrative schooling history | Planning interpretation for Indian NRI / OCI/PIO (I) |
|---|---|
| Grades 11 and 12 completed in an accredited US school | May satisfy the overseas-schooling part, subject to dates, graduation and documents |
| Grade 11 in India; Grade 12 in the USA | Does not on its own satisfy the two-year Grade 11–12 overseas-study requirement |
| Both Grades 11 and 12 in India while parents live in the USA | Parent residence alone does not establish overseas education |
| US citizen with OCI documentation and mixed school history | Check OCI/PIO classification and category-specific rules before applying |
A US GPA, AP courses or SAT score should never be treated as automatic proof of DASA eligibility. The complete qualification, subject list, accreditation and required equivalence documents matter. Our JEE exam centres abroad guide can also help with test logistics.
Create one digital folder before DASA registration begins. The exact list depends on candidate status and is determined by the active brochure; the following documents are commonly relevant:
On mobile, swipe left or right to view the complete table.
| Document | Reason to prepare it |
|---|---|
| Passport and identity records | Confirm nationality and matching personal details |
| OCI/PIO card, if applicable | Establish the candidate classification |
| Class 10, 11 and 12 marksheets/transcripts | Verify school history and academic eligibility |
| School letter and overseas-study proof | Support Grade 11–12 education abroad when required |
| JEE Main scorecard and rank | Confirm qualifying examination result for B.Tech allocation |
| Equivalence / percentage certificate if required | Explain foreign qualification or grade conversion |
| Parent Gulf-employment proof for CIWG | Establish special CIWG entitlement |
| Payment receipts and choice/allotment records | Complete counselling and admission reporting |
For a complete category-wise paperwork checklist, also see the DASA/CIWG documents required for registration.
Names and dates should match across the passport, school records and counselling application. Missing verification deadlines can cause loss of eligibility even when the student has a valid rank.
Rankings are a starting point, not the final decision. Build a shortlist of colleges and branches that fit the student’s interests and preparation, then check actual seat availability and financial commitments.
| Factor | Compare this before choosing a branch |
|---|---|
| NIRF ranking | Official engineering ranking and year, not an NRI-specific rank |
| Programme | Exact CSE / ECE / Mechanical / AI branch name and curriculum |
| DASA seats | Branch-specific Non-CIWG count and current seat matrix |
| CIWG seats | Branch-specific CIWG seats only if the student qualifies |
| Cutoff | Same year, round, branch and DASA category; note opening versus closing ranks |
| Total cost | Tuition, campus charges, housing, travel and refund policies in USD equivalents |
| Placements | Institute-reported branch outcomes, with reporting year and sample size where given |
Start with CSE seat counts at NIT Trichy, Surathkal and Warangal; compare only the applicable Non-CIWG cutoff and the student’s JEE Main rank. Also shortlist less competitive alternatives.
Verify foreign-national eligibility and school qualification first, then compare ECE at NIT Calicut, Warangal and Surathkal using the correct DASA category.
Verify parent Gulf-employment documents, CIWG seats, past CIWG closing ranks and USD-equivalent first-semester payments before ordering branches.
The profiles above are illustrative planning examples, not real admissions or guarantees of college allotment.
For the complete DASA process—eligibility, registration, fees, allocation and refund rules—see DASA UG admission guide and DASA seat allotment guide.

Choose the guide that answers your next decision rather than repeating the same eligibility check:
Eligible NRI students can apply through DASA or another applicable route, but a seat is not guaranteed. The central DASA process uses JEE Main ranks, candidate category and programme choices.
The central DASA scheme provides supernumerary seats for eligible overseas candidates. This is different from an unrestricted NRI management quota.
Eligible foreign nationals may apply under the appropriate DASA category, subject to JEE Main, academic and documentation rules.
The central DASA UG B.Tech route in 2026 required a valid JEE Main Paper 1 score and rank. Other independently managed programmes may use different rules.
No. CIWG depends on the qualifying parent Gulf-employment conditions and candidate documents, not merely residence in the United States.
NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal and NIT Rourkela are major options to compare. Confirm the exact CSE seats, cutoffs and curriculum for your admission category.
DASA Non-SAARC tuition differs from the ordinary institute tuition and CIWG structure. Always check the official DASA fee and individual campus charges.
No. IIT B.Tech admission uses JEE Advanced and its applicable seat-allocation rules, not central DASA.
Build a JEE Main preparation plan around your US or overseas school schedule, and check your DASA/CIWG admission route before choosing colleges.
Book Free JEE Demo Ask an NIT Admission CounsellorEditorial methodology: NIT ordering is based on the NIRF 2025 Engineering list. CSE seats are from the revised DASA UG 2026 seat matrix. Fees and eligibility use the DASA UG 2026 information brochure. Closing ranks must be verified by admission year, round, programme and DASA category.
