NRI abroad
Indian citizen living in the US for work, business or study.
Where a college lists an NRI category, it is often about 15% of that college’s seats. It is not 15% of every MBBS seat in India. AIIMS is a different story: it does not list a separate NRI pool.
| Point | 2027 planning answer |
|---|---|
| Exam | NEET UG 2027. Required for every MBBS seat since 2020. |
| Who may claim the category | Eligible NRI, OCI, PIO and ward-of-NRI / sponsored candidates, as that authority writes it. |
| Where seats sit | Selected government, private and deemed colleges. Not every campus. |
| How many to plan around | About 6,320+ in the last published cycle. Recheck the 2027 brochure. |
| Who allots | MCC for deemed universities. State bodies for most government and private NRI seats. |
| Fee band we quote as examples | About $20,000 to $85,000 a year, or about ₹18-45 lakh, depending on the college. Confirm before you pay. |
Agents in New Jersey, Texas, California, Dallas or Illinois who sell a 2027 seat without NEET are selling a lie. The National Medical Commission and the Supreme Court made NEET non-negotiable.
Fix the legal row first. A house in the USA does not pick the category. The passport, OCI card and sponsor do. Full status rules sit on the NRI / OCI / PIO eligibility page.
Indian citizen living in the US for work, business or study.
Where that year’s brochure still puts OCI in the NRI row.
Parent’s NRI file, not the child’s US school, decides this.
First-degree relative, only if that authority allows it.
Child of Indian government staff on official deputation.
Families lose rounds on this one line. All India Quota is a central government-seat pool. NRI reserved seats are a different label, on a different list, with different papers.
| Seat type | Can an NRI use it? | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| 15% All India Quota | Only if that student is eligible for AIQ, not because they are NRI | Central counselling for government seats. This is not the NRI reserved pool. |
| 85% state quota | Only if that state’s domicile and NRI rules fit | Fees, portals and papers change by state. |
| Private college seats | Through state counselling where the college lists NRI seats | Usually cost more than a government NRI seat. |
| Deemed university | Through MCC if that campus lists an NRI category | Many deemed campuses keep a dedicated NRI row. |
| 15% NRI reserved quota | Eligible NRI / OCI / PIO / ward of NRI | Only in colleges that actually publish that row. |
This is the exam-and-marks bar. It is not the full embassy and sponsor file.
| Rule | Plan this for NEET 2027 |
|---|---|
| Age | 17 by 31 December 2027. No upper age after the 2021 court reading. |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English. |
| Class 12 / high-school PCB | About 50% aggregate for General; about 40% for OBC / SC / ST, or the equivalent the authority accepts. |
| NEET | Mandatory. 50th percentile General; 40th for OBC / SC / ST. No attempt cap. |
IB, A-Level and American diploma students can sit if those sciences are actually on the transcript. The subject-level check is the American curriculum page.
If the parent lives and works in the United States as an NRI, the child may be able to claim a 2027 seat as a ward. The child does not need a US passport or an OCI card for that claim. The parent’s NRI file does the work. Confirm the live MCC or state notice before you build the folder.
A US-based student planning NEET 2027 still travels to India or to another listed overseas city. Most families fly to India. The form-and-travel sequence is on the USA apply-and-sit page.
Qualifying lets the student enter 2027 counselling. It does not buy Manipal, Amrita or JSS. Marks-to-rank maps move every year. Treat the numbers below as last-cycle planning bands, not a 2027 promise.
| Category | Qualify | Planning band for popular NRI colleges |
|---|---|---|
| NRI General | 50th percentile (about 200+ / 720 in that year’s map) | 500+ if you want the names US families shortlist first |
| NRI OBC | 40th percentile (about 150+) | 400+ as a working target |
| NRI SC / ST | 40th percentile | 300+ preferred where those seats exist |
| NRI PwD | 45th percentile | Qualify, then read that year’s category seats |
A US AP or IB student still has to learn NCERT Biology. Most serious families give that six to twelve months. Score movement sits on the NRI cutoff blog until that landing page is built.

An NMC-recognised Indian MBBS can sit USMLE. IMG match rates sit far below a US MD match. Plan that path from year two if the family wants a US residency.
Largest private NRI pool (974). No Karnataka domicile for those seats. Add Manipal, JSS, Yenepoya and BLDE on MCC. Typical fees $29,000-$62,000. Use this when the score is in the 400-550 band and you want options.
Often the cheapest full course, about $110,000 for 5.5 years at the government colleges. CMC Ludhiana sits beside them. Use this when budget is the first filter.
Sri Ramachandra, SRM, Chettinad, Meenakshi through MCC. About $44,500-$60,000 a year. Use this for a large teaching hospital and English-medium wards.
CEE-regulated private NRI fees about $22,000-$26,000. Amrita Kochi is the premium deemed row at about $50,000. Strong clinical load.
Most government NRI seats (447) in the last published table. About $30,000 a year. RUHS. Use this when the family wants a government campus.
If the family is eligible for NRI, use that row first. Management prices are set by the college and are often higher and less public.
| NRI quota | Management quota | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | NRI / OCI / PIO / ward of NRI | Any NEET-qualified student |
| Share | About 15% where the college lists it | Often 15% in private colleges |
| Fee | Usually notified by the state / NMC | Set by the institution |
| Papers | Mission certificate and NRI file | No NRI file |
A US MD still needs a bachelor’s degree. NRI-quota MBBS starts after Grade 12. The cheap end (Punjab government, about $110,000 for the course) is a real saving. The top deemed total can land near a private US MD bill. Confirm both sides before you treat this as a finance decision.
| US MD | NRI-quota MBBS | |
|---|---|---|
| After Grade 12 | About 8-13 years to a licence | About 5.5-6 years including internship |
| Tuition, lower end | $180,000-$220,000 public | About $110,000 full course (Punjab / HP examples) |
| Tuition, premium | $280,000-$350,000 private | About $247,000-$468,000 at top deemed campuses |
| Living, full course | $80,000-$120,000 | $15,000-$30,000 |
| US licence path | USMLE + residency | USMLE + residency as an IMG |
Parent lives in the USA. Student is the applicant. This row is filled first.
NRI spouse, parent or sibling, only if that 2027 brochure allows it.
Uncle or aunt. Only some states and colleges accept this. Do not plan it as automatic.
These are counselling files, not 2027 rank promises.
American high school. Father an NRI. Student on OCI. The family mixed eligibility, AIU and MCC papers. She joined a TestprepKart two-year NEET plan in Grade 11. The counselling desk built the document list and started AIU before counselling. She took a private NRI seat through MCC without a last-week paper chase.
Qualified NEET. Parents froze on the fee spread between government, private and deemed. After the result, TestprepKart ranked colleges by his AIR, the family budget and past NRI closings. He took an NRI seat in Round 1 and skipped a pile of colleges they could not actually pay for.
The class and the counselling folder have to move together. A US evening batch does not help if the Mission certificate is still in the mail.
| Work | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Status review | NRI, OCI or ward-of-NRI before choices are locked |
| NEET class | NCERT PCB on a US-evening batch |
| College list | AIR, budget, deemed vs state, government vs private |
| Two-track calendar | MCC and the state portals on IST |
| Paper folder | Apostille, consulate slot and originals for reporting |

Yes. Since 2020 every MBBS seat needs NEET. Anyone selling a no-NEET NRI seat is selling fraud.
No. AIQ is a central government-seat pool. NRI reserved seats are a different label on a different list.
Often yes, where that year’s brochure puts OCI in the NRI category. Read the live notice. Status rules are on the eligibility page.
Often, if the parent’s NRI file and the Mission certificate match that authority. The child does not need to be a US citizen for that claim.
No separate NRI pool. That answer lives on the AIIMS NRI quota page.
Deemed NRI seats: MCC. Most government and private NRI seats: the state. Register on both if you want both lists.
Build the legal row, sit NEET, run MCC and the states on IST, and keep the Mission certificate under six months old. The score opens the door. The folder and the choice list decide the college.
