Students can evaluate admission trends and make a realistic choice-filling strategy with the help of JoSAA cutoffs of last years.
Students should be asked to compare:
Previous year cutoffs should be used as a reference only because admission trends change every year.
The cutoff may change because of:
A better strategy is to compare the latest cutoff with at least two previous counselling cycles before preparing the final preference list.
Students should divide their college options into three groups.
These are institutes or programmes where the student’s rank is slightly outside the previous closing rank.
These are institutes or programmes where the student’s rank is close to previous closing-rank trends.
These are institutes or programmes where the student’s rank is comfortably within previous closing-rank ranges.
Students should arrange choices in their genuine order of preference and include enough realistic backup options. # JoSAA Cutoff Category-Wise
JoSAA publishes Opening Ranks and Closing Ranks separately for each of the reservation categories. Cutoff of each category depends on availability of seats, number of applicants and counselling trends.
Students should always check the cut off as per their own category and not the cut off of General category.

The Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quota is only for admission to NITs and some GFTIs through JEE Main.
IITs have no quotas for Home State or Other State . Admissions are through JEE Advanced .
Students applying to NITs need to check the cutoff according to their eligible quota.
| Home State Quota | Other State Quota |
| Reserved for candidates whose qualifying state matches the NIT’s state | Applicable to candidates from all other states and union territories |
| Available only in NITs and selected GFTIs | Available only in NITs and selected GFTIs |
| Usually has different cutoff trends | Usually more competitive for top NITs |
Many NRI students confuse the JoSAA Cutoff with the DASA Cutoff.
These counselling processes are completely different.
| JoSAA Cutoff | DASA Cutoff |
| Admission through JoSAA counselling | Admission through DASA counselling |
| For eligible JEE Main and JEE Advanced candidates | Primarily for Foreign Nationals, NRIs, OCI, PIO and CIWG candidates (subject to current eligibility rules) |
| Covers IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA | Covers participating NITs, IIITs and other institutes under DASA |
| Opening and Closing Rank released after each JoSAA round | Opening and Closing Rank released during DASA counselling |
Students should always refer to the correct counselling process before comparing admission trends.
JoSAA and CSAB counselling are held separately.
CSAB Special Rounds to fill remaining seats in participating institutes after completion of JoSAA counselling as per official counselling schedule and seat availability.
| JoSAA | CSAB |
| Main counselling process | Special counselling for vacant seats |
| Conducted first | Conducted after JoSAA |
| Includes IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs (as applicable) | Primarily for vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs |
| Multiple counselling rounds | Special Round 1 and Special Round 2 (subject to official schedule) |
Students who do not secure their preferred institute during JoSAA may consider participating in CSAB, if eligible.
Examining the cutoffs from last year gives students an idea of how admission trends change over time.
Students should compare: Instead of comparing only one counselling round,
Studying multiple years of cutoff data provides a more realistic estimate of admission possibilities.
