Q1. My child was born in the USA and holds a US passport. Can they apply under the NRI quota at SRM University?
Indeed. Students of Indian descent with a US passport (or any other foreign passport) and an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card are eligible to apply under the NRI/International student quota. Your child is probably eligible for OCI status if they were born to Indian parents in the United States. Students may apply as foreign nationals if they only have a US passport and do not have OCI or PIO status.
Q2. I am working in Dubai/Abu Dhabi on a work visa. My child studied in a CBSE school in UAE. Do they qualify as an NRI student for SRM admissions?
Yes, without a doubt. Your child is eligible to be an NRI student if you are an Indian national residing and working in the United Arab Emirates or any other Gulf nation. Your current UAE resident permit (resident Visa/Iqama) is proof of NRI status for CIWG purposes.
Q3. My child completed 11th and 12th in India but we are based in Saudi Arabia. Do they still qualify for the NRI quota?
Yes, having NRI parents is sufficient for SRM’s general NRI quota, even if the student finished their education in India. However, the student must have finished at least two years of education outside of India in order to be eligible for the DASA/CIWG scheme (admission to NITs/IIITs). Parental NRI status is crucial for SRM’s own NRI quota; verify this with SRM’s Office of International Relations.
Q4. Can my child get admission to SRM University without JEE Main or SRMJEEE?
Indeed. Without taking JEE Main or SRMJEEE, international students and NRI/OCI/PIO applicants can be admitted to SRM University based just on their 12th-grade grades. They can, however, choose to pay domestic (INR) costs and receive a 35% scholarship by taking the SRMJEEE.
Q5. What is the total cost of a 4-year B.Tech at SRM University for an NRI student from the USA?
The approximate total expense is:
Tuition: USD 5,000–7,000 annually x 4 years = USD 20,000–28,000Hostel + mess: INR 1.5–2 lakhs annually × 4 years = INR 6–8 lakhs (about USD 7,200–9,600)The entire course is expected to cost between $30,000 and $42,000.The tuition is drastically reduced if your child is eligible for the SRMJEEE scholarship, bringing the total closer to USD 22,000–30,000.
Other (books, trips, etc.): $1,000 to $2,000 annually
Q6. Are there any additional scholarships for NRI students beyond the SRMJEEE scholarship?
Merit-based scholarships, sports scholarships, and unique scholarships for students with outstanding academic records are periodically offered by SRM University. When applying, it is best to speak with the SRM Scholarship Office directly. Scholarships for Indian-origin students studying in India are also provided by institutions such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
Q7.Are NRI students from the USA or the Gulf safe at SRM University?
Campuses at SRM University are well-guarded by security guards, round-the-clock CCTV, and an International Student Cell that assists NRI students from enrollment through graduation. Chennai is a multicultural city with a sizable NRI population. Students from the USA or the Gulf can more easily adjust to the new culture thanks to the campus’s foreign culinary selections.
Q8. Can I pay the fees in installments?
Semester-by-semester fee payments are usually required for SRM. At the time of admission, talk about payment plans with the Office of International Relations because special agreements might be feasible.
Q9. Is there a reservation for Gulf (GCC) country students specifically?
Yes, through DASA’s CIWG (Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries) subscheme. Children of Indian workers in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman are given preference under the NRI quota. Admissions to NITs and IIITs are subject to this. The normal NRI quota is applicable for SRM-specific admissions.
Q10. Will my child have to learn Tamil or any regional language?
No. All programs at SRM University are taught in English. Although Tamil is the native tongue of Tamil Nadu, students can communicate fully in English on campus and throughout Chennai.
