Is it possible for an NRI student pursuing studies in the USA to be admitted into an IIT in India? Yes, but how the application is processed varies depending on the applicant’s citizenship and academic qualifications. While a student with an Indian passport studying outside India goes through a different procedure, an eligible US citizen does not.
This guide explains IIT admission for NRI students in 2027 in simple terms, including eligibility, JEE Main and JEE Advanced, how to apply, top IIT colleges in India, required documents and the rules for foreign-national seats.
2027 update: As of October 22, 2026, the JEE Advanced 2027 Information Brochure and final admission schedule have not been published. The eligibility routes below are based on official 2026 rules and must be checked again when the 2027 notifications are released.
Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students can apply to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), provided they meet the applicable admission requirements. However, there is no general NRI quota for Indian citizens in IIT B.Tech admissions. Living in another country does not provide an automatic seat or an exemption from the required entrance examination.
The process for those Indian citizens studying outside India would be JEE Main first, then JEE Advanced, and finally JoSAA counseling. Some eligible foreign students and OCI/PIO students can directly apply for JEE Advanced 2026 without appearing in JEE Main but should get a proper JEE Advanced rank.

IITs do not offer a general NRI quota for Indian passport holders. The provisions for foreigners are quite different. In the JEE Advanced 2026 format, eligible foreigners and OCI/PIO (F) category applicants might be considered for supernumerary admission with a limit of 10% of seats available in a given IIT programme.
That 10% is a maximum limit, not a reserved quota for all applicants. Foreign applicants were also required to have Common Rank List ranks comparable to or better than the applicable OPEN gender-neutral program cut-off and satisfy the respective academic requirements.
DASA and CIWG do not provide admission to IIT B.Tech programmes. They apply to eligible participating institutes outside the IIT system. Students interested in NIT and IIIT backup plans can read the DASA undergraduate admission guide.
Students must satisfy both JEE Advanced exam eligibility and the academic requirements for admission to IITs. One criterion is not enough. The student’s passport, age, subjects studied in class 12, the year of passing qualifying examination, and the number of JEE advanced attempts have to be verified before preparation and registration.

An Indian citizen studying in Texas, California, Dubai or another overseas location generally needs to qualify through JEE Main before registering for JEE Advanced. An H4 visa, the parent’s H1B visa or a US green card does not itself change the student’s Indian citizenship.
For 2026, eligible foreign nationals had the direct option to appear for JEE Advanced. Treatment under OCI/PIO would depend upon the date the OCI/PIO card was acquired, which implies that students having their OCI/PIO cards prior to March 4, 2021, had the choice of appearing through OCI/PIO (I) and OCI/PIO (F) categories, whereas those having OCI/PIO cards after March 4, 2021 appeared under foreign national category.

JEE Main and JEE Advanced are different entrance examinations. The most important difference for students targeting IIT B.Tech admission is that a qualifying JEE Advanced rank is required. JEE Main alone cannot secure an IIT B.Tech seat through the standard JoSAA route.

The IIT admission process for NRI students starts with verifying the candidate’s nationality and ends with getting admitted to the designated IIT. The person with an Indian passport residing outside India would need to qualify via JEE Main & JEE Advanced. With the new 2026 guidelines, the eligible foreigners and OCI/PIO(F) candidates would be able to directly apply for JEE Advanced without giving JEE Main.

Indian passport holder living in the USA: JEE Main → qualify for JEE Advanced → JEE Advanced rank → JoSAA counselling → seat acceptance and IIT reporting.
Eligible US citizen or OCI/PIO (F) candidate: Direct JEE Advanced registration under the 2026 framework → JEE Advanced rank → applicable foreign-national seat-allocation conditions → JoSAA counselling and institute admission formalities.
Important for 2027: There is no NRI quota in the IITs. Supernumerary seats for foreign-nationals come under different regulations and cannot be reserved seats. Please check the JEE Advanced 2027 Brochure and JoSAA business rules before registering and doing counseling/travel plans.
Example:A student of Indian origin who has completed Grade 12 from New Jersey needs to check eligibility for JEE Main and Class 12, and then get ready for JEE Advanced and JoSAA. An American citizen might have a separate process of examination registration; hence, the details need to be verified.

Once NTA opens the applications for the desired 2027 year session, it is advisable to register yourself, fill all the necessary passport and schooling information, make sure that you have selected the right engineering papers and preferred cities for your exam, and make the payment of the application fee.
Students who qualify for JEE Advanced must then complete a separate JEE Advanced registration. Eligible foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates should follow the official direct-registration instructions rather than assuming they must first submit a JEE Main application.

While choosing an IIT, students should compare the branch, previous JoSAA closing ranks, programme availability and total institute fees, not only the college name. A high JEE Advanced rank does not guarantee the student’s first-choice campus or branch.
Keep your examination registration documents separate from the documents needed for JoSAA and final IIT reporting. The exact list can vary for an Indian-citizen NRI, a foreign national and an OCI/PIO candidate.
Check the final 2027 application instructions before uploading files. Having all the documents ready is useful, but it does not by itself confirm eligibility.
IIT fees for NRI students depend on the institute, programme and admission category. Indian citizens living abroad generally pay the applicable Indian-national tuition fees. Foreign nationals and certain OCI/PIO candidates may have different fee structures.

No. NRI status alone does not provide direct admission to IIT B.Tech programmes. Indian-citizen NRIs ordinarily follow JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA. Eligible foreign nationals still need JEE Advanced.
