If you are an NRI family in the USA with a child aspiring for IITs, NITs or other top engineering colleges in India, the JEE process can be daunting to understand. This guide provides all information that US-based students need to know about JEE Main 2026, including eligibility criteria, exam centers, registration process, documents required and admission through DASA and other NRI engineering admission routes.
JEE or the Joint Entrance Examination is a national level entrance test in India for admission into undergraduate engineering programs. It is conducted in two phases. JEE Main is the entrance examination for admission into NITs, IIITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), and JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for admission into the IITs.
For NRI students, JEE Main is even more important as it is the basis of the DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) scheme. The DASA route for NRI admissions is now based solely on JEE Main rank and not SAT scores, so one exam opens up two different routes for NRI applicants — direct JEE-based admission and DASA.

Book Free Trial SessionYou should have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (or equivalent qualifying examination) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a Technical Vocational subject. Most U.S. high school students meet this requirement by taking AP Physics, AP Calculus, and either AP Chemistry or AP Biology.
Recent NTA notifications have no age limit for JEE Main. This is useful for NRI students who apply a little later than the usual Indian timeline, due to their academic calendar or family circumstances.
Candidates can appear for JEE Main for three consecutive years after passing Class 12, in two sessions per year (January and April). This provides NRI students with up to six total attempts, if they need them, though most intend to qualify on the first or second try.
Students following an American curriculum can qualify through a US State Board diploma, an AP-based curriculum or an IB Diploma (provided the academic credential is considered equivalent to India’s Class 12 by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). If your particular school or credential is not automatically accepted, you may require an AIU equivalence certificate to confirm eligibility prior to registration.
Here’s the detail that most families find pleasantly surprising: JEE Main is held at an official test center in Washington, D.C. – which implies NRI students living in the USA don’t have to fly to India to take the exam.
NTA conducts JEE Main in about 15 international cities covering North America, Middle East and South East Asia in each cycle. In the most recent cycle, the distribution was as follows: although the precise list may vary somewhat from year to year:

While registering, applicants can choose up to four preferred JEE examination centres. The NTA will finalize the center as per availability and the exact location will be mentioned on the admit card. U.S. students may be looking to Washington, D.C. Families with connections to the Gulf may be eyeing Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
The registration process is completely online, and the structure is the same for domestic and NRI candidates – only the document handling and fee category differs. Complete walk through here:

DASA-2027 will be coordinated by one of the NITs (as officially stated on the DASA portal). The conducting NIT for 2027 is yet to be confirmed, and the official DASA Brochure 2027 will be released shortly after the announcement. Admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programs under the DASA scheme for 2027 will be based on JEE Main Score 2027, including for NRI students living in the USA and Middle East applying under CIWG/DASA quota.
NTA has a differentiated fee structure based on the candidate applying from within India or outside India. NRI, OCI, PIO or Foreign National candidates who choose the category as ‘Outside India’ have to pay a higher fee as compared to the domestic candidates. Historically, this has been in the range of a few thousand rupees higher, though the exact number is confirmed every year in the JEE Main Information Bulletin.
Always verify the exact current fee on the official NTA bulletin before paying, since fee structures are revised each cycle and can vary by paper (B.Tech vs. B.Arch vs. B.Planning) and gender category.
After clearing JEE Main, the NRI student has the choice of taking JEE Advanced for admission to IIT or taking admission to NIT/IIIT and DASA on the basis of Main score.

National Institute of Technology, Trichy is conducting Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) on behalf of Ministry of Education for the students of NRI, OCI, PIO and Foreign National, who have completed their qualifying education from outside India.

For NRI students whose parents are working in UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Saudi Arabia, DASA has a special sub-category Children of Indian Workers in Gulf (CIWG). That’s not the case for many families in the US, but it’s good to know if you have relatives in the Gulf region navigating the same system.
The DASA scheme has now over 60 participating institutes, which is a significant list of NITs, IIITs, School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) campuses and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes. This is a very larger set of institutions as compared to the standard NRI quota available at individual colleges and makes DASA one of the most efficient routes for NRI students who have cleared JEE main.

Always cross-check these timelines against the current year’s official DASA brochure, since exact dates shift annually and are confirmed only after JEE Main results are declared.
Except DASA, some NITs and CFTIs may have a limited number of NRI seats through JoSAA depending upon the JEE Main rank. DASA offers an exclusive admission pathway for foreign educated students but the NRI seats via JoSAA are limited and are part of the normal counselling. Many NRI families apply through both to increase their chances of admission.

No. JEE Main is for NRI (Indian passport holders outside India), OCI cardholders, PIO cardholders and Foreign Nationals – including US citizens with no Indian origin documentation, if academic eligibility is met. A US passport does not disqualify a candidate.
My child attends a US high school. Will their AP courses be recognized for JEE Main eligibility?
Yes in general, if the school is accredited and the student has done Physics and Mathematics as core subjects. If there is any doubt about equivalency, an AIU Equivalence Certificate will sort it out – but most of the accredited US high schools with normal AP or Honors science tracks don’t ask for this for JEE Main specifically (be aware this requirement may be different from NEET, which is stricter about formal equivalency).
Is there really no need to travel to India to take JEE Main?
Right, for most US-based candidates. The Washington, D.C. center has been in NTA’s international exam network in recent cycles without a gap. However, center availability is confirmed on an annual basis, so always be sure it is listed for the particular session you are registering for.
What’s the difference between applying through DASA and through the regular JoSAA NRI quota?
They are different systems but both use your JEE Main score. DASA, managed by NIT Trichy, is specifically designed for foreign-educated NRI/OCI/Foreign National students and has a vast network of NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs. The usual NRI quota seats are lesser and they go through the normal JoSAA counselling process with the local applicants. Many families apply to both at the same time, since being eligible for one does not disqualify you from the other.
