For undergraduate admission, the more important questions are: Whether the candidate is an Indian citizen/Foreign National/OCI/PIO candidate? What category of seat was allotted? IIT Fee for NRI Students: What Parents Must Know

The phrase “NRI fee in IIT” is often misleading. IIT undergraduate admission does not function like a private-college NRI quota. An Indian citizen for the purpose of admission can be a student residing in USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait or Bahrain.

That distinction matters because an Indian citizen studying overseas normally follows the Indian-national JEE pathway.Foreign national follows foreign-national provisions of JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced 2026 Rules for Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO Candidates

Official JEE Advanced 2026 rules have defined the foreign nationals as the candidates who are not the citizens of India. Foreign-national candidates are not required to appear for JEE Main 2026 before applying for JEE Advanced 2026, if they fulfilll the other eligibility criteria.

Foreign-national and OCI/PIO (F) candidates can be allotted foreign supernumerary seats. These seats are capped at up to 10% of the total seats of the respective IIT, program-wise. The candidate must fulfilll the eligibility conditions as prescribed in the relevant OPEN benchmark and must achieve the prescribed rank standard.

How OCI/PIO Candidates Are Treated in 2026

• OCI/PIO cards obtained after 4 March 2021 are treated under the foreign-national provisions as OCI/PIO (F).
• OCI/PIO cards obtained before 4 March 2021 can, under the 2026 rules, choose either OCI/PIO (F) or treatment at par with Indian nationals as OCI/PIO (I).
• OCI/PIO (F) candidates compete only for foreign supernumerary seats.

Official IIT Bombay Fee Example for 2026–27

IIT Bombay’s official example for UG new entrants comes handy for JEE Advanced 2026. The figures in the table below are based on IIT Bombay’s published Autumn Semester 2026–27 data. It should not be treated as the fee table for every IIT.

What Is Included in IIT Bombay’s Academic Fee?

The “academic fee” is broader than tuition alone. For IIT Bombay’s 2026 UG new entrants, it includes one-time admission-related charges, per-semester academic charges and refundable deposits.

IIT Bombay’s 2026 fee circular also states that SC/ST/PwD students are exempt from the tuition-fee component. That is why the academic-fee total for those entrants is lower than the GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL figure.

IIT Hostel, Mess and Living Expenses for NRI Students

Parents tend to emphasize tuition and underestimate the non-academic part of the budget. In practice, the first semester cash outflow can cover hostel fees, mess advance, deposits, travel and personal set-up expenses.

• Hostel fee: usually charged separately from the academic fee.
• Mess advance: commonly collected separately and may be adjusted according to institute rules.
• Books and stationery: personal expense and usually not part of the institute fee table.
• Laptop and software: can be a major first-year expense if the student does not already have a suitable device.
• Travel: NRI families should budget for international flights plus travel within India.

How the First-Semester IIT Payment Works After JoSAA Adjustment

The amount paid during JoSAA is not always paid again on top of the entire institute fee. The allotted IIT normally signifies the modification in the fee structure for the relevant seat acceptance amount.

How to Estimate the Total Annual IIT Cost

A realistic annual budget should be built from the actual institute circular rather than by multiplying one headline tuition number. Use this process:

1. Check the first-semester academic fee for the student’s exact category.
2. Add hostel charges and the mess advance.
3. Subtract any seat-acceptance amount that the institute officially adjusts.
4. Check which first-semester charges are one-time deposits or admission fees.
5. Obtain the second-semester fee from the institute’s semester circular when available.
6. Add books, laptop, travel, insurance and personal expenses.
7. Keep a reasonable buffer for fee revisions and currency movement if parents are remitting money from abroad.

Can You Calculate the Full 4-Year IIT Cost Today?

You can make a planning estimate, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed four-year fee. IITs may revise tuition, hostel and institute charges in later semesters. One-time deposits also should not be multiplied across all eight semesters.

For that reason, a better approach is to publish the current first-semester official amount, explain what items repeat and ask families to check the circulars for the following semester. This is more accurate than multiplying the total first-semester times eight.

2. Read the allotted IIT’s new-entrant instructions and fee circular.
3. Check how the institute has adjusted the applicable seat-acceptance amount.
4. Pay the academic and hostel balance through the institute’s official payment portal.
5. Pay the mess advance separately if instructed.
6. Save the payment acknowledgement, receipt and transaction reference.
7. Check whether additional hostel registration or medical formalities must be completed before reporting.
