IIT Eligibility For NRI Students : JEE Main, JEE Advanced & Admission Guide

IITs are now accepting applications from NRI students from USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and other countries for admission to undergraduate programmes. But you cannot get admission to IIT through DASA or separate NRI quota. The precise route depends on the student’s citizenship and OCI/PIO status.

Can NRI Students Get Admission into IITs?

Okay. NRI students are eligible to apply for IIT admission if they meet the rules applicable to their citizenship and OCI/PIO category. The main point is that residence outside India does not determine the route of admission. A student can have an Indian passport and be living in the USA or Gulf. Another student can have a foreign passport or an OCI/PIO card.

The correct route depends on the student’s legal status at the time of application:

• Indian citizen living abroad: follows the Indian-national route and normally needs JEE Main before JEE Advanced.
• Foreign passport holder: follows the foreign-national route and may register directly for JEE Advanced, subject to the remaining eligibility rules.
• OCI/PIO candidate: follows OCI/PIO (I) or OCI/PIO (F) rules depending on the official classification and registration option.

Before registration, students and parents need to select the correct category as choosing the wrong route may affect the eligibility, reservation treatment, seat category and document verification.

Is There an NRI Quota in IITs?

There is no DASA style NRI quota in general for UG admission in IITs. NRI students of Indian-nationality compete through JEE Advanced, JoSAA. Foreign national seats are separate supernumerary seats under official foreign-candidate rules.

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria

1. JEE Main Performance

Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech paper.

2. Age Limit

Candidates should have been born on or after 1 October 2001. Indian SC, ST and PwD candidates receive a five-year relaxation.

3. Number of Attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

4. Class 12 First Appearance

For JEE Advanced 2026, the candidate should have appeared for Class 12 or equivalent for the first time in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A limited exception applies to certain boards that declared 2024 results on or after 18 June 2024.

5. Earlier IIT Admission

A candidate generally must not have been admitted earlier to an IIT programme listed in the relevant JoSAA rules, subject to the limited official exceptions.

Class 12 Marks Required for IIT Admission

Candidates must satisfy at least one of these conditions with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects:

• At least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or equivalent; 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or
• Be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of the relevant board.

Recognised overseas qualifications include GCE A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Candidates coming from a foreign board which is not in the list may have to produce an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities.

JoSAA Counselling for IIT Admission

JoSAA counselling is the central seat-allocation process for IITs. A JEE Advanced rank does not guarantee an IIT seat unless the candidate completes JoSAA registration, fills choices correctly and responds to every allotment and verification deadline.

1. Registration: Sign in using the required examination credentials and verify personal details.
2. Choice filling: Arrange IITs and academic programmes in genuine preference order. Add enough realistic and ambitious choices.
3. Mock allotment: Use the mock result to understand how the current choice order may perform.
4. Seat allotment: Check the allotted institute and programme after each round.
5. Seat response: Select Freeze, Float or Slide according to the desired upgrade strategy.
6. Document verification: Upload valid documents and respond quickly to any query raised by the verification authority.
7. Fee payment: Pay the seat-acceptance fee within the deadline.
8. Final reporting: Complete institute-level reporting and admission formalities.

• Map AP, IB, A-Level, IGCSE or American Curriculum topics against the full JEE syllabus.
• Use NCERT and one dependable reference source per subject.
• Solve chapter-wise PYQs after every chapter.
• Move from chapter tests to part-syllabus and full-length mock tests.
• Maintain formula sheets and an error notebook.
• Choose USA/Gulf-friendly live classes or recorded lessons.

Two-Year Plan

• Use Class 11 to build concepts and complete chapter-wise tests.
• Use Class 12 to finish the remaining syllabus while revising Class 11 every week.
• Start full-length JEE Main and JEE Advanced mock tests after most of the syllabus is complete.

One-Year Plan

• Divide the year into syllabus completion, mixed practice and final revision phases.
• Prioritise high-weightage and weak chapters without ignoring the full syllabus.
• Increase mock-test frequency during the final three months.

Can an NRI student get admission into an IIT?

Yes. The student must follow the route applicable to citizenship and OCI/PIO status, qualify JEE Advanced and complete JoSAA counselling.

Is there a separate NRI quota in IITs?

Can Gulf-based Indian students apply to IITs?

Yes. An Indian-passport student living in a Gulf country generally follows the Indian-national route through JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA.

Do foreign nationals get reservation in IIT admission?

Foreign-national candidates are considered under separate supernumerary seats and are outside the Indian reservation categories described in the official rules.
