IIT Admission Guide for NRI, OCI and Foreign Students
Many NRI parents think their child can get admission in an Indian Institute of Technology through NRI quota, DASA seat or management seat. That’s not the way you get admitted for undergrad in IIT.
There is no general NRI quota in IITs for Indian Citizen students living overseas. An NRI student holding an Indian passport usually follows the JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA route. Foreign Nationals and some OCI/PIO candidates follow different rules and may compete for foreign supernumerary seats.
No. IITs do not provide a separate NRI, DASA or CIWG quota for Indian citizens residing outside India.
However, Candidates who are legally considered as Foreign Nationals. OCI/PIO candidates considered as foreign under the relevant rules are also included in this category. Such candidates can compete for foreign-supernumerary seats after qualifying JEE Advanced. These seats are not an NRI quota and are capped program-wise as per the official rules.

An NRI quota, in general, is the number of seats that an institution reserves or offers separately for the eligible Non-Resident Indian students or NRI sponsored candidates. Some private universities and some state admission systems may have NRI or NRI sponsored categories.
IIT undergraduate admission does not use that model. IIT seats are allocated according to JEE Advanced rank, nationality, category, seat type, program preferences and the JoSAA business rules.

IIT UG admission is based on JEE Advanced information brochure and JoSAA business rules. The standard Indian-national seat pool includes the relevant Government of India reservation categories, but excludes a separate NRI category.
Therefore, an Indian citizen living in the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain or another country cannot claim an IIT seat simply on the basis of overseas residence.
A student may remain an NRI for residence and tax purposes and retain his/her Indian passport. IIT admission is based on the citizenship of the candidate and OCI/PIO classification and not on the place where the family lives.

An NRI student who remains an Indian citizen follows the standard Indian-national route:
The student competes according to the applicable Indian category. Overseas residence does not create extra preference in the IIT seat allocation.
NRI students need a clear JEE Main, JEE Advanced and JoSAA roadmap because IIT admission does not work through a general NRI quota.
Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates may register directly for JEE Advanced without taking JEE Main, provided they satisfy all other foreign-candidate eligibility conditions.
Under the current official rules:
Foreign National may be eligible for the foreign seat pool, including a U.S. citizen. An Indian passport holder NRI is not eligible for the foreign seat pool just because the student is living abroad.
OCI and PIO candidates must determine whether they are classified as OCI/PIO (F) or OCI/PIO (I).

OCI/PIO (I) and OCI/PIO (F) candidates are not eligible to avail of benefits of GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC or ST reservations for allotment of seats in IITs. If it is a choice, it must be made carefully, as the official rules say it cannot be changed afterwards.

Important: A JEE Main rank alone cannot secure an IIT seat. The candidate must qualify JEE Advanced and participate in JoSAA.

For IIT admission, candidates must satisfy at least one of the official Class 12 performance conditions with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects:
Students who have passed Class 12 or equivalent outside India may be required to obtain a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities stating that their qualification is equivalent to India’s Class 12 examination.
JoSAA manages the joint seat allocation for IIT programs covered by its business rules. A qualified candidate should:
Previous opening and closing ranks should be used only for planning. They do not guarantee an identical result in a later counselling cycle.
The same rule applies across all twenty-three IITs: there is no general NRI quota for Indian passport-holding students.

However, the separate official rules still allow those eligible Foreign National and OCI/PIO (F) candidates to be considered for foreign supernumerary seats in IITs.
