SAT/ACT Scores for Athletes Needed to Join Ivy League Schools
In case you are an Indian/NRI student and also an athlete you will be more than curious to know how these Ivy League Colleges get athletes to play for them. There is something known as college recruiting. It is the process by which most of the colleges recruit for student athletes.
Colleges get in touch with students who play brilliantly at high school level as they are expected to perform well in college sports as well. Several college sports teams form part of NCAA i.e. National Collegiate Athletic Association. This is a Non-Profit Organization that works with more than 1000 colleges and a whooping half a million student athletes.
Overview of Recruiting Process:
There are various ways in which a college recruits athletes. They can do face to face meetings, send e-mails or text or even through Social Media. Mentioned below is brief overview of recruiting process:
Step 1: The coaches at the college get in touch with high school athletes or vice versa.
Step 2: The athletes from the school visit the campus in order to gather more information about athletic program offered by the college.
Step 3: Coaches go to the schools in order to ascertain level of performance of the students.
Step 4: Colleges provide scholarship to the athletes whom they want to be part of their team.
Step 5: The student athletes enter into a non-binding verbal agreement with the college that they will play for them.
Step 6: Lastly, the students put their signature on Letter of intent. This is a document which states that the student will play sport for a period of one year for the college in return for one year of athletic scholarship.
Recruting Process for Ivy League Colleges:
The Recruiting Process for General Colleges and Ivy League Colleges is roughly the same.
There are just four main areas where the recruiting process differs.
Higher Expectation Level with Reference to Academic and Athletic Standards
Ivy League Colleges are amongst the best colleges in the country. As a matter of fact all Ivies rank among top 15 colleges. These high ranking means that expectation level from the students is also very high. The colleges demand higher level of expertise and skill from a student.
No Athletic Scholarship is Offered by Ivy League Colleges
Ivy League colleges do not give athletic scholarships to prospective student athletes. They just provide need based help to the students and this is applicable to all kinds of students and not only to student athletes.
Academic Index
In order to ascertain whether Indian NRI student athletes are fit for them Ivy League has come with a ranking system known as Academic Index. This is a point based system which ranks the athletes on academic factors such as GPA and standardized test scores (ACT/SAT and SAT Subject Tests). Not much is known how this number is calculated. It is not at all easy to find out whether you will qualify as a student athlete in an Ivy League school.
Likely Letter
This letter is issued prior to official admission. It shows that there are bright chances that a student will be admitted in the college provided no sudden issues with reference to college application or academic performance crop up.
Most of the Ivy League colleges reach out to the students during junior year of High School.
