The Digital SAT Reading and Writing Expression of Ideas domain includes transitions, which assess your capacity to make logical connections between concepts. Typically, there are two to four Transitions questions in each of the two modules. You are asked to select the transition that best concludes the text in each question. Identifying the connections between concepts (such as contrast, cause/effect, example, or continuation) is more important for success than vocabulary. To help you become proficient in the skill, this page offers 50 free Transitions practice questions with explanations for eight different relationship kinds.
Together with Rhetorical Synthesis, Transitions is one of the two Expression of Ideas skills on the Digital SAT. Together, they account for 8 to 12 of the 54 questions in the Reading and Writing portion, or roughly 20% of the total. The format of a Transitions question is usually the same: two or three brief lines, a space for a transition word or phrase, and four grammatically correct response options. “Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?” is a constant stem. Vocabulary knowledge alone won’t get you to the correct answer because each option is a real word used appropriately; you must determine precisely how the second thought links to the first before you even look at the possibilities.
| Relationship Type | Signal Words | What It Looks Like | Priority |
| Addition/continuation | furthermore, moreover, in addition, additionally, also | The second sentence adds a new, similar point to the first. | High |
| Cause and effect | therefore, thus, consequently, as a result | The second sentence is a direct outcome of the first. | High |
| Contrast | however, nevertheless, yet, on the other hand, conversely | The second sentence pushes against or contradicts the first. | Highest |
| Concession | although, despite this, granted, still | The first idea is acknowledged as true, but the second qualifies or limits it. | High |
| Example/illustration | for example, for instance, specifically | The second sentence gives a specific case of a general claim. | Medium |
| Sequence/time | then, subsequently, meanwhile, afterward | The second sentence follows the first in time or in a series of steps. | Medium |
| Emphasis/restatement | indeed, in fact, essentially | The second sentence reinforces or restates the first idea more strongly. | Medium |
How to utilize this page: Cover the answer choices and summarize the relationship in one word, such as “adds, contradicts, results from, restates, or gives an example of,” before reading them.” Next, select the option that corresponds with your single word. The majority of incorrect responses are transitions that would sound acceptable in a different text; they just don’t fit the particular logical connection that is in front of you.

As opposed to guessing about what to do next, students can study with a defined plan by using this free SAT Prep Guide. Practice SAT English one topic at a time before moving into full Reading and Writing modules. Use these topic-wise questions to strengthen transitions, rhetorical synthesis, grammar, vocabulary, evidence, and other high-frequency SAT English skills.
These questions assess your ability to identify instances in which the second phrase merely adds a point in the same direction as the first; it is not a conclusion or a contrast, but rather an additional aspect of the same concept.
Q1 of 50 Addition and Continuation Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q1: Basic same-direction addition
Urban beekeeping has grown in popularity as cities look for ways to support local pollinators. ______, several cities have begun offering small grants to residents who want to start a rooftop hive.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) In addition,
The second sentence adds a new, related fact about cities’ support for beekeeping; it doesn’t contradict the first sentence (ruling out A), it isn’t a direct consequence of it (ruling out C), and it’s more of a supporting fact than a particular example of the general claim (ruling out D, since example would need to illustrate rather than extend the claim). In addition accurately indicates the addition of a new point in the same direction.
Q2 of 50 Addition and Continuation Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q2: Addition with a stronger connector
The museum’s new wing houses an extensive collection of Indigenous textiles. ______, it includes a research library open to visiting scholars.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Furthermore,
The relationship is addition, not contrast (B), not cause-and-effect (C), and not replacement (D). “Furthermore” is the only option that indicates adding one more supporting point. Both sentences describe characteristics of the same new wing, and the second is just an extra feature layered onto the first.
Q3 of 50 Addition and Continuation Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q3: Addition disguised by sentence length
A recent survey of small business owners found that inflation remains their top concern heading into next year. Labor shortages ranked a close second, with nearly 40% of respondents citing difficulty filling open positions. ______, rising insurance premiums were cited by almost a third of owners as a growing source of financial strain.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Similarly,
Each new concern is being added to a running list rather than being contrasted with or caused by the previous one; all three sentences describe distinct worries from the same survey in the same direction. Even though the sentence is lengthier and more thorough than a normal example, “similarly” indicates that this new issue falls under the same category of finding as the one before it, which fits the additional pattern.
Q4 of 50 Addition and Continuation Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q4: Addition that must rule out a cause-and-effect look-alike
The city’s new bus rapid transit line reduced average commute times along its route by nearly 15 minutes. ______, ridership on that route has increased by almost 30% since the line opened.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Additionally,
Although it’s easy to read the ridership increase as a result of the shorter commute times and select “therefore,” the text only lists two distinct good outcomes side by side and never asserts that one caused the other. “Therefore” would overstate a link the lines don’t really convey, therefore “additionally” is the safer, more truthful option in the absence of an explicit causal claim in the text itself.
In order to answer these questions, one must be able to identify instances in which the second phrase is a direct result or consequence of the first-that is, something that occurred as a result of the first, not merely a related fact.
Q5 of 50 Cause and Effect Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q5: Direct, stated cause and effect
Heavy rainfall over the past week has saturated the soil across the region. ______, local officials have issued a flash flood warning for low-lying areas.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: C) As a result,
The flood warning is directly caused by the damp soil; the second sentence clarifies an outcome that follows naturally from the first. There is no contradiction (A), the warning isn’t a specific case of saturated soil (B), and the two events aren’t just happening concurrently and independently of one another (D) because the warning is a result of the rainfall.
Q6 of 50 Cause and Effect Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q6: Cause and effect with a distractor that sounds similar
A manufacturing plant switched to a new quality-control process in 2022. Defect rates dropped by 22% within the first six months. ______, the plant was able to reduce the size of its returns-processing team by nearly half.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Consequently,
The decreased returns team is a downstream effect of the decline in defect rates because fewer defective items naturally result in fewer returns to process. In other words (D) would imply that the third sentence simply restates the second, which it does not-it describes a new result-while similarly (A) would imply that the third sentence discusses a similar but distinct reality, which understates the causal link.
Q7 of 50 Cause and Effect Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q7: Cause and effect that requires spotting an implied mechanism
Researchers found that participants who slept less than six hours performed significantly worse on memory tests the following day. Sleep is known to play a critical role in consolidating short-term memories into long-term storage. ______, sleep-deprived participants likely struggled to retain information they had learned the day before.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Therefore,
Consequently, this chain of reasoning is accurately signaled; the alternative options either imply simultaneity rather than logical consequence (D), narrow to a particular situation that isn’t presented here (C), or contradict the setting (B). The third phrase draws a conclusion that logically flows from the first two: participants who are sleep deprived do poorly because sleep consolidates memory and they receive less of it.
Q8 of 50 Cause and Effect Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q8: Distinguishing a real cause from a coincidental addition
A coastal town invested in a new seawall in 2019. The following year, a major storm caused significantly less property damage than a comparable storm had caused a decade earlier. ______, several nearby towns without seawalls reported damage levels consistent with historical storms of similar strength.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) In contrast, the third sentence is a distinct data point (towns without seawalls) that contrasts with the town that built one, supporting the inferred argument that the seawall made a difference. It is not a result of anything in the previous two sentences. The third line, which is about towns without seawalls, is incorrectly framed by choices A and C as a result of the seawall; “by contrast” accurately indicates the comparison between the two circumstances.
Since contrast errors are among the most frequent misses, these questions assess your ability to recognize when the second sentence pushes against, confuses, or contradicts the first. This is the single highest-priority connection type on the test.
Q9 of 50 Contrast Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q9: Basic direct contrast
The film received glowing reviews from critics upon its release. ______, audience reception was far more mixed, with many viewers criticizing its pacing.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) However,
The direct contrast between mixed audience response and critical appreciation is a clear signal for contrast. Because two lines that represent opposite reactions to the same movie do not fit either an example relationship (D) or a causal link (C),similarly” (A) would incorrectly indicate agreement between the two groups.
Q10 of 50 Contrast Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q10: Contrast that requires reading past a shared subject
Both proposed policies aim to reduce traffic congestion downtown. The first would raise parking fees during peak hours to discourage driving. ______, the second would instead expand free public transit service during those same hours.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: C) By contrast,
Both programs have the same ultimate goal, but they employ distinct strategies: one discourages driving through cost, while the other encourages an alternative through improved service. Similarly, (A) would incorrectly suggest that the two approaches are similar, leaving out the contrast that the word actually establishes.
Q11 of 50 Contrast Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q11: Contrast between expectation and outcome
Economists had widely predicted that rising interest rates would cool the housing market significantly. ______, home prices in several major metro areas continued to climb throughout the year.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Instead,
Instead accurately captures this expectation-versus-reality contrast, whereas accordingly (A) would incorrectly suggest the outcome matched the prediction. The second sentence describes an outcome that directly contradicts the prediction in the first sentence: home prices rose rather than cooled.
Q12 of 50 Contrast Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q12: Contrast hidden behind a shared positive framing
A new vaccine showed strong effectiveness against severe illness in clinical trials. ______, its effectiveness against mild infection was considerably lower, prompting researchers to recommend continued use of other preventive measures.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) However,
Although “strong effectiveness against severe illness” and “considerably lower” effectiveness against mild infection are truly contrasting findings within the same study, both statements describe the same vaccine in a generally favorable research setting, making this disparity easy to overlook. Instead of qualifying the second finding, “moreover” (A) and “similarly” (D) would misframe it as supporting the first.
Concession questions are similar to contrast questions in that the first thought is accepted as true, but the second statement restricts, qualifies, or opposes it still; the logical structure is yes, but.
Q13 of 50 Concession Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q13: Basic concession pattern
The new software update introduced several useful features for organizing files. ______, many users reported that it also slowed down the program’s overall performance.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) However,
The first statement acknowledges the usefulness of the update, but the second sentence introduces a significant drawback-a yes, but concession connection. As a result (C) would incorrectly frame the slowdown as a result of the helpful features rather than a distinct disadvantage, similarly (B) would incorrectly suggest the second sentence agrees with the first in the same direction, and in fact (D) would incorrectly suggest the second sentence supports the first rather than qualifies it.
Q14 of 50 Concession Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q14: Concession with a stronger qualifier
The startup’s new app has attracted a loyal user base within its first year. ______, its revenue remains far below what investors had projected at launch.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Despite this,
The second statement isn’t a result of the first (B), an example of it (C), or a similar truth (D); rather, it’s a qualification that remains true despite the just-made positive remark. The devoted user base (a positive fact) is acknowledged, but revenue still falls short.”Among the options, despite this is the most obvious concessive marker.
Q15 of 50 Concession Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q15: Concession versus straightforward contrast
The committee acknowledged that the proposed budget cuts would likely reduce service quality in the short term. ______, they argued that the long-term savings justified the trade-off.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Nevertheless,
The second statement does not flow from the first as a cause (C), restate it as an example (D), or agree with it in the same direction (B). Despite acknowledging a drawback (lower service quality), the committee continues to argue in favor of the cuts.”Nevertheless” indicates that the debate goes on in spite of the acknowledged disadvantage.
Q16 of 50 Concession Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q16: Concession requiring precise scope reading
Critics of the new zoning law point out that it could slow the pace of new housing construction in the short term. Supporters counter that the law’s long-term goal is to preserve neighborhood character. ______, even some supporters admit that the law may need revisions if housing shortages worsen.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Granted,
A concession inside an ongoing debate, the third sentence qualifies the strong defense provided in the second line by introducing a limitation accepted even by the law’s advocates. “Therefore” (B) would erroneously imply that the admittance is a logical result of the supporters’ argument rather than a restriction on it, while similarly (C) or in addition (D) would completely miss the qualifying tone.
In these questions, you are asked to identify when the second phrase offers a particular, tangible example of a general assertion stated in the first, and to steer clear of this transition when an example has already been provided.
Q17 of 50 Example and Illustration Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q17: Basic example relationship
Many household products contain chemicals that can be harmful if mixed together. ______, combining bleach and ammonia-based cleaners releases toxic fumes.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) For instance,
The broad statement in the first phrase-that household chemicals can be hazardous when combined-is illustrated in the second sentence with one particular, tangible example (bleach and ammonia). This is an example connection from a textbook that excludes simultaneity (D), contrast (A), and causality (C).
Q18 of 50 Example and Illustration Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q18: Recognizing when NOT to repeat for example
Several major retailers have begun experimenting with cashier-less checkout technology. One large grocery chain, for example, has installed sensor-based checkout in over 50 stores nationwide. ______, a national pharmacy chain has piloted a similar system in a handful of locations.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Similarly,
This is the usual trap: since the third sentence is actually another concrete situation, a student who skims might go for “for example” once more. However, writing “for example” again would be redundant because the text has provided one example in the second sentence. Instead, “similarly” correctly marks the third sentence as a second, analogous situation. One of the most often tested traps in this area is the difference between providing a first example and adding a second, similar one.
Q19 of 50 Example and Illustration Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q19: Example versus specification
The city’s new recycling program accepts a wider range of materials than the previous one. ______, glass bottles and jars, which were previously excluded, can now be placed in curbside bins.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Specifically,
The second line describes the precise material category that makes the general claim valid, which is exactly what “specifically” indicates, rather than merely illustrating the general assertion with a different case.”Specifically” is a more accurate fit when a generic claim is being reduced to its particular content, yet “in fact” (A) might function as emphasis in certain situations.
Q20 of 50 Example and Illustration Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q20: Example that must be distinguished from a supporting cause
Small-scale urban farming has been credited with improving food security in several neighborhoods. A community garden in one former vacant lot now supplies fresh produce to over 200 families each month. ______, the garden has also become a gathering space that strengthens neighborhood ties.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) In addition,
The garden’s function as a community gathering place is an additional benefit to the previously mentioned food-security benefit; it is not a result of anything mentioned (C, D) nor an additional illustration of the same general claim (the general claim was about food security, not community ties). In addition” appropriately denotes the introduction of a new, relevant point in addition to the first.
Students frequently confuse this relationship with cause-and-effect. These questions assess the ability to recognize when the second sentence comes after the first in time or as the next stage in a process.
Q21 of 50 Sequence and Time Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q21: Basic chronological sequence
The research team collected water samples from twelve sites along the river each spring. ______, they returned to the same sites in late summer to measure seasonal changes.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Subsequently,
The second visit to the places follows the first in a simple time-based sequence that is part of a continuous study process. What happened in the next relationship is not captured by any of the other options.
Q22 of 50 Sequence and Time Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q22: Sequence versus cause and effect
The bridge’s original support beams were inspected and found to be structurally sound. Engineers then reinforced the deck to accommodate heavier modern traffic loads. ______, the bridge was reopened to the public after being closed for eight months.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Finally,
Reopening is best understood as the final stage in a specified repair work sequence (inspection, reinforcement, reopening), rather than as a strictly logical result expressed as reasoning; finally reflects its position as the sequence’s final event. “Therefore” (A) is less exact than a transition that clearly indicates the conclusion of a described process, but it is nonetheless correct in spirit.
Q23 of 50 Sequence and Time Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q23: Simultaneous events, not sequential ones
Downtown construction crews began repaving Main Street in early June. ______, a separate crew started replacing aging water lines on a nearby residential block.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Meanwhile,
In contrast to a true sequence marker like then (A), which would falsely imply that one project began only after the other, “meanwhile” is the transition designed specifically for simultaneous, unrelated (or loosely related) events. The two projects are occurring around the same time, in different locations, and neither is causing the other.
Q24 of 50 Sequence and Time Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q24: Distinguishing a process step from a result
A vineyard harvests its grapes by hand each September to avoid damaging the fruit. The grapes are then sorted by ripeness before being sent to the crushing facility. ______, the juice ferments in temperature-controlled tanks for several weeks before bottling.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Afterward,
The next step in the winemaking process is described in this section in the following order: harvest, sorting, and fermentation. “Afterward” accurately carries on with this methodical process. Therefore (B) would falsely indicate that the fermentation is merely the next step in a predetermined procedure rather than a logical outcome of the sorting.
Words like indeed or in fact are used instead of addition or example markers in these questions to assess the ability to identify when a sentence isn’t adding any new information at all, but rather restating or amplifying the same argument.
Q25 of 50 Emphasis and Restatement Hard
TRAP MEDIUM Q25: Restatement mistaken for addition
The professor’s research has been cited in hundreds of academic papers over the past decade. ______, few scholars in the field have had a comparable level of influence.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Indeed,
The second sentence reiterates and emphasizes the same underlying point-the professor’s disproportionate influence-in different language without adding any new information. “In addition” (A) would erroneously imply the introduction of a distinct new fact while, in reality, the second phrase is highlighting the same concept from a different perspective.
Q26 of 50 Emphasis and Restatement Hard
TRAP MEDIUM Q26: A believable “however” that’s actually wrong
The company’s quarterly earnings exceeded analyst expectations for the third straight period. ______, its stock price rose by 12% following the announcement.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) In fact,
Although it is a popular choice for many students under time pressure, there is no contradiction here-strong earnings and a rising stock price travel in the same direction. Therefore, a contrast word would be incorrect. In fact accurately indicates that, rather than contradicting the first phrase’s good news, the second sentence expands and supports it.
Q27 of 50 Emphasis and Restatement Hard
TRAP HARD Q27: A cause-and-effect distractor that’s actually restatement
The lecture covered the same material as the textbook chapter, but in more depth. ______, the professor spent nearly twenty minutes explaining a concept the textbook addressed in a single paragraph.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) For example,
The second line isn’t a result of the first; rather, it’s a specific example of what “more depth” actually looked like in actuality, even though “as a result” or “therefore” might seem reasonable at first. In this instance, just one option correctly recognizes the statement as an example, and three of the four options share the same incorrect relationship family (causation).
Q28 of 50 Emphasis and Restatement Hard
TRAP HARD Q28: Similarity that’s actually contrast in disguise
Both students studied for the same number of hours before the exam. ______, one scored in the top 5% of the class, while the other scored below average.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Yet,
Although the statement starts by establishing a similarity, the results are opposite despite the shared setup (the same research hours). Students who choose similarly (A) after reading studied for the same number of hours” fail to recognize that the sentence’s true meaning is the unexpected difference in results.
Q29 of 50 Emphasis and Restatement Hard
TRAP HARD Q29: Two contrast options, only one fits the direction
The town’s population has declined steadily since the factory closed a decade ago. ______, the number of small businesses downtown has actually grown over the same period.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Interestingly,
A surprise and unexpected result is the expansion of small enterprises in spite of population loss; interestingly captures both the contrast and the unexpected aspect of the outcome, which as expected (D) immediately opposes.Similarly (A) incorrectly suggests that the two trends move in tandem, and therefore (C) incorrectly suggests a causal relationship that isn’t stated in the text.
Here, all seven of the aforementioned relationship kinds are combined in a random order, just as they would be in a real test module. There is a thorough explanation for ten questions (Q30, Q32, Q34, Q36, Q39, Q41, Q43, Q45, Q48, and Q50). The format of the remaining questions is simplified to allow you to go through them quickly while still verifying your logic.
Q30 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Easy
TRANSITIONS EASY Q30: Extended set: contrast with an expectation setup
Analysts expected the new phone model to outsell its predecessor within the first month. ______, early sales figures came in below the previous model’s launch numbers.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Instead,
The analysts’ expectations, which instead indicate accurately, are at odds with the actual sales numbers. This difference between expectation and actuality is not captured by any of the other possibilities.
Q31 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The library extended its weekend hours starting last spring. ______, staff have noticed a steady increase in weekend visitors ever since.
A) Since then, B) However, C) For example, D) In contrast,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: A. Since then is the appropriate sequence/result marker since the rise in visitors corresponds with the shift in hours over time; the other possibilities misrepresent the relationship as contrast or particular example.
Q32 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
TRANSITIONS MEDIUM Q32 · Extended set: concession within a scientific claim
Early trials of the new material showed promising resistance to corrosion. ______, researchers caution that its long-term durability under extreme temperatures has not yet been tested.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) However,
A crucial warning about what is still unknown-a contrast/concession relationship-qualifies the encouraging early results. “Therefore” (B) would incorrectly imply that the caution follows logically as a result of the encouraging outcomes, when in fact it qualifies them.
Q33 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The chef sources most of the restaurant’s produce from a farm twenty minutes away. ______, the seafood is flown in daily from a coastal supplier several states away.
A) Similarly, B) By contrast, C) As a result, D) For example,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B. The other options portray this as resemblance, causality, or a particular instance of the same assertion, but the two sourcing approaches are opposite in nature (local vs. remote), which by contrast signals directly.
Q34 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q34 · Extended set: cause-and-effect requiring two-step reasoning
A prolonged drought has reduced water levels in the region’s main reservoir to a 20-year low. Local farmers rely on that reservoir for the majority of their irrigation needs. ______, several farms have been forced to reduce planted acreage this season.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Consequently,
The link created by the previous two words logically leads to the decreased acreage: low reservoir levels, coupled with farmers’ reliance on that reservoir, result in less water available for irrigation and, consequently, less area that can be grown. The sole option that encapsulates this cause-and-effect cycle is Consequently.
Q35 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The novel’s first half unfolds at a slow, deliberate pace. ______, the second half moves quickly, packing several major plot developments into just a few chapters.
A) Similarly, B) In contrast, C) Therefore, D) For instance,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B. The in contrast signal is accurate because the two parts’ tempo is clearly opposite (slow vs. quick).
Q36 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q36 · Extended set: sequence that resembles cause and effect
The city council held three public forums before finalizing the new zoning ordinance. Resident feedback led to several changes in the original draft. ______, the revised ordinance was approved unanimously last month.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Ultimately,
Rather than being a direct logical consequence expressed as an argument, the approval is best understood as the last stage of a process that is described, such as public forums, changes, and approval. Given that the words are structured as a narrated process, “ultimately” indicates the final occurrence in a sequence, which is more appropriate than a rigid causal marker.
Q37 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The startup’s first product failed to gain traction with consumers. ______, its second product, launched a year later, became a bestseller within weeks.
A) Similarly, B) By contrast, C) As a result, D) In addition,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B. The other choices misrepresent resemblance or unstated causality; the two goods had opposing consequences, which “by contrast” indicates directly.
Q38 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The orchestra’s new conductor has introduced a noticeably faster tempo in classical pieces. ______, some longtime patrons have complained that the change feels rushed.
A) Predictably, B) For example, C) Similarly, D) As a result,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: A.Predictably best conveys this expected-response link among the options provided; the complaints are a normal, unsurprising response to the tempo adjustment rather than a particular illustrative situation or an additional new information.
Q39 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q39 · Extended set: example that must be distinguished from restatement
Several school districts have adopted project-based learning models in recent years. One district replaced its traditional science final exams with student-led research presentations. ______, that same district requires students to defend their history projects before a panel of community members.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Similarly,
The third sentence presents a second, similar example of project-based learning in the same district; it is neither a fresh, unrelated addition nor a restatement of the science example, as “in fact” would suggest.Similarly accurately indicates a second event that is similar to the first.
Q40 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The company’s app has consistently ranked among the top downloads in its category. ______, its in-app purchase revenue has remained flat for the past three quarters.
A) Similarly, B) Yet, C) For example, D) As a result,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B. Flat revenue and popularity (top downloads) pull in separate directions, creating a contradiction that yet accurately depicts.
Q41 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q41 · Extended set: distinguishing concession from straightforward addition
The new highway bypass has reduced through-traffic in the town center by nearly 40%. ______, some local business owners argue that the drop in passing traffic has also reduced foot traffic to their stores.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) However,
Although the bypass’s ability to reduce traffic is presented as a positive, the second sentence presents a concessive contrast-a drawback that some business owners identify with the same alteration. Instead of presenting this as a complex counterpoint, In addition (B) would incorrectly portray it as just another neutral fact.
Q42 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The lab confirmed the compound’s effectiveness against the targeted bacteria in initial tests. ______, it began testing the compound against a wider range of bacterial strains.
A) Subsequently, B) However, C) For example, D) In contrast,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: A. Subsequently is the right sequence marker because the larger testing comes after the first success.
Q43 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q43 · Extended set: emphasis mistaken for addition
The senator’s proposal faced skepticism from members of both parties when first introduced. ______, it went on to pass with overwhelming bipartisan support just two months later.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) Remarkably,
The setup (initial distrust from both parties) is dramatically reversed by the outcome (overwhelming bipartisan support), necessitating a transition that denotes this unexpected change. Instead of treating the second sentence as a significant development in the same story, in addition (A) would mistakenly interpret it as a distinct, unconnected new fact.
Q44 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The hiking trail was closed for repairs for most of the summer. ______, visitor numbers this year are expected to be lower than in previous years.
A) Similarly, B) As a result, C) For example, D) However,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B.The path closure directly results in fewer visitors, which “as a result” communicates appropriately.
Q45 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q45 · Extended set: contrast that requires tracking an implied comparison group
Students who participated in the after-school tutoring program improved their test scores by an average of 12 points. ______, students with similar starting scores who did not participate showed almost no improvement over the same period.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) By comparison,
In order to emphasize how their results differed from those of the first group, the second line introduces a comparison group (non-participants), which “by comparison” accurately names. Similarly (A) would falsely imply that the two groups’ results were similar, which is in direct opposition to the meaning of the sentence.

Q47 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The city’s air quality has improved significantly since the closure of a nearby coal plant. ______, respiratory-related hospital visits in the area have also declined over the same period.
A) Similarly, B) However, C) For instance, D) In addition,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: D.Rather of being a reiteration of the same fact, this is a second, connected but different beneficial consequence being added alongside the improvement in air quality; “in addition” is the most appropriate option.
Q48 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q48 · Extended set: distinguishing genuine cause from parallel timing
A regional airline added three new routes to smaller cities last year. Passenger complaints about flight delays also increased noticeably over the same period. ______, the airline has not stated whether the new routes are responsible for the rise in delays.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: B) However,
In contrastc to what a reader would have thought following the first two phrases, the third sentence directly refutes the tempting premise that the delays were caused by the new routes. “Therefore” (A) would incorrectly imply that the airline verified a causal relationship, which the statement expressly refutes.
Q49 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Medium
The two lakes are located less than five miles apart and share a similar climate. ______, one lake supports a thriving population of native fish, while the other has seen a sharp decline over the past decade.
A) Similarly, B) Yet, C) As a result, D) For example,
Open Answer and Explanation
Answer: B. The results diverge significantly despite the shared setup (close proximity, similar environment), creating a contrast that “yet” accurately reflects.
Q50 of 50 Extended Mixed Practice Hard
TRANSITIONS HARD Q50 · Extended set: final question combining sequence and concession
The nonprofit spent its first two years building partnerships with local schools before launching any programs. Once those partnerships were established, enrollment in its after-school programs grew quickly. ______, the organization acknowledges that reaching rural schools farther from its home base remains a significant challenge.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
Open Answer and Explanation
Correct Answer: A) Still,
The last statement, which follows an account of the nonprofit’s expansion and achievements, presents a real constraint that the organization itself admits to-a compromise following a string of encouraging facts. Therefore (B) would incorrectly indicate that the problem logically follows as a result of the growth just described, while subsequently (D) would incorrectly frame this as merely the next event in the timeline rather than a qualifying caveat.

| Mistake | Why It Happens | The Fix |
| Picking the transition that sounds right without naming the relationship first | Reading the sentence with a choice plugged in almost always sounds fluent, since every choice is grammatically correct | Discuss the answer options, summarize the connection in a single term, and then match a response to that word. |
| Confusing contrast with concession | Both involve some kind of pushback, but concession acknowledges the first point as true before qualifying it, while pure contrast just opposes it | Find out if the initial sentence is being directly disputed or accepted as true (yes, but). |
| Reaching for however as a default whenever two ideas feel different | “However” is the most familiar contrast word, so it gets overused even when the actual relationship is addition or emphasis | Verify if the two concepts are truly at odds with one another rather than merely focusing on different facets of the same subject. |
| Repeating “for example” when an example has already been given | Test-writers often include one true example earlier in the passage as a distractor-builder | The following similar situation typically requires similarly, not another “for example, if the text has already demonstrated a point once. |
| Assuming two events happening close together means one caused the other | Cause-and-effect language feels natural when two facts appear back to back | Verify whether causality is stated or implied in the text; if it is only parallel timing, use a sequence or addition marker. |
| Missing restatement/emphasis relationships | Restatement doesn’t add new information, so it’s easy to mistake for either addition or example | Look for indeed or in fact instead of an addition or example word if the second sentence simply states the same thing more forcefully. |
| Rushing because the sentences are short | Short passages create false confidence, leading students to skip the one-word relationship check | Every Transitions question should be handled with the same caution as a longer one; the shortness is what makes single-word errors expensive. |
The format of each Transition question on the Digital SAT is identical to that of the Bluebook: two or three brief phrases, a blank, and the stem “Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?” Here’s how to complete it effectively on test day.
Because Transitions promotes exact logical reading considerably more than vocabulary growth, this three-week curriculum first increases relationship-identification speed before adding mixed and timed exercise.
| Week | Focus | Activity |
| Days 1–2 | Diagnostic and core relationships | Respond to each of the 50 questions on this page. Record every miss according to the type of relationship. After that, finish ten more addition and cause-and-effect questions per day. Prior to reading any option, identify the relationship. |
| Days 3–4 | Contrast and concession | Focus on the distinctions between the two categories as you complete 15 contrast questions and 15 concession questions from official practice sets. |
| Days 5–6 | Example, sequence, and emphasis | Over the course of both days, finish 10 emphasis/restatement questions, 15 sequence questions, and 15 example/illustration questions. |
| Day 7 | Week 1 review | Go over each recorded error from Days 1 through 6. In each weak category, repeat five new questions. |
| Days 8–9 | Trap drilling | Respond to 20 questions that are specifically designed to highlight the repeated example and sounds right but wrong relationship traps. Keep track of the trap that most frequently catches you. |
| Days 10–11 | Mixed-relationship speed rounds | Try to finish each of the four sets of ten mixed Transitions questions in eight minutes. |
| Day 12 | Cross-skill review with Rhetorical Synthesis | Complete 10 mixed questions based on this page and Rhetorical Synthesis exercise, as both skills share the Expression of Ideas domain. |
| Day 13 | Week 2 review | Revisit every logged mistake from Days 8–12. Until the pattern no longer catches you, retake five new questions in each weak category. |
| Days 14–16 | Timed mixed practice | To replicate the actual module pace, do three timed sets of 10 mixed Transitions questions in nine minutes each. |
| Days 17–18 | Full-length error review | Take two official practice courses for the Digital SAT in Reading and Writing. Determine the relationship type and trap pattern of each transition that was missed. |
| Day 19 | Targeted re-drill | Based on Days 17–18, answer 15 new questions about your two weakest relationship types. |
| Days 20–21 | Full Reading and Writing modules | Take two final full official Digital SAT Reading and Writing modules under timed settings. Compare the precision of your transitions to the baseline from Day 1. |
For students in Grades 10 and 11 who have extra time, combine this plan with the Rhetorical Synthesis skill to fully master Expression of Ideas before proceeding to a comprehensive, timed reading and writing review covering all four domains.
Priya, Grade 11 – Sugar Land, TX | Reading and Writing Score Improvement: 620 → 690 in Three Weeks

Priya’s error record revealed a distinct pattern: regardless of whether the relationship was contrast, concession, or something else entirely, she was using however nearly every time two phrases felt even slightly different from one another. Within a week, her contrast-versus-concession errors significantly decreased and her Expression of Ideas accuracy increased from approximately 55% to almost 90% once she began pausing to name the relationship in a single word before looking at the response alternatives.
Arjun, Grade 10 – Fremont, CA | Building Transitions Skills Early

Despite having a large vocabulary, Arjun frequently failed Transitions questions by selecting the word that sounded the most formal rather than the one that made sense. He developed the habit of covering the response alternatives and paraphrasing the relationship first by working through the contrast, concession, and emphasis categories on this page early in his preparation. A few weeks later, that habit carried over into full-length practice modules.

How many Transitions questions appear on the SAT?
The Expression of Ideas domain, which includes Transitions and Rhetorical Synthesis, makes for about 20% of the Digital SAT Reading and Writing. According to the requirements of the College Board exam, students usually encounter two to four Transition questions in each of the two Reading and Writing modules.
What does a Transitions question actually look like?
Two or three brief sentences, typically totaling 25 to 60 words, are supplied to you, with a blank where a transitional word or phrase should be. “Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?” is the stem used in all Transitions questions. The test measures your ability to recognize the logical relationship, not your vocabulary. All four of the answer options are grammatically correct transition words.
What’s the most common mistake on Transition questions?
Selecting the transition that, when read aloud, sounds the most natural rather than the one that reflects the two lines’ true logical relationship. The only way to consistently identify the right response is to identify the relationship (addition, contrast, cause-and-effect, etc.) before examining the options because each answer choice is grammatically accurate and some will “sound fine” in the sentence.
Is “however” always the answer when two sentences feel different?
No, and this is one of the most frequent mistakes. “However” indicates a direct contrast, but lines that seem different may actually be in a concession connection (“yes, but”), an emphasis relationship (reiterating the same idea more forcefully), or just two distinct additions. The fundamental ability being examined is precisely determining which relationship is at work, as opposed to automatically using the most well-known contrast word.
How is Transitions different from Rhetorical Synthesis?
Although they test separate concepts, they are the two talents that comprise the Expression of Ideas domain. Transitions asks you to select the one word or brief phrase that most effectively joins two sentences that already exist. In order to achieve a predetermined goal, Rhetorical Synthesis requires you to construct a complete sentence from a collection of bulleted notes. Rather than rewarding general knowledge with the subject, both promote accurate interpretation of the actual logical or rhetorical assignment.
How should I practice Transitions questions effectively?
Covering the response possibilities, reading both lines, and summarizing their relationship in a single word before considering any alternative is the most productive single behavior. This transforms a guessing activity into a matching exercise and avoids the typical mistake of selecting a transition because it reads well rather than because it makes sense.
