The SAT transition questions are not aimed at finding out which word sounds the most sophisticated. The key thing in such questions is your ability to detect the logic behind the relation between concepts.
A word like “however” lets the reader know that there is going to be a change of direction. “Therefore” shows the consequence. “For example” provides supporting evidence or an illustration. “Moreover” provides additional information.
When you learn to recognize this relationship prior to considering any options, SAT transition questions will become very predictable for you.
This article presents you with an SAT transition words list, clarifies the difference between confusing transition words, and offers sample SAT transition questions.
SAT transition words are those words or phrases that demonstrate how one idea is logically connected to another idea.
On the Digital SAT, transitions are measured in the Expression of Ideas section of Reading and Writing.
A transition could indicate that the following idea:
provides additional information,
contrasts with the previous idea,
is a consequence,
offers an example,
repeats an idea,
happens next in a series of events,
notes a limitation,
or stresses an idea.
The key is not to memorize a lengthy list of possible transitions.
The key is to know the purpose of the transition.
For instance:
The first experiment yielded contradictory results. As a consequence, the researchers changed their procedure.
In this case, “As a consequence” works, because changing the procedure follows from the contradictory results.
Now consider the following:
The first experiment yielded contradictory results. Nevertheless, the researchers viewed the entire project promisingly.
In this case, the second idea contradicts the expectations formed from the first idea. “Nevertheless” indicates a contrast.
This is precisely what SAT measures.
Instead of memorizing transitions alphabetically, organize them according to the job they perform
| Logical Relationship | What the Next Idea Does | Common SAT Transition Words |
| Addition / Continuation | Adds a related supporting idea | moreover, furthermore, additionally, also, in addition |
| Similarity | Shows that two ideas are alike | similarly, likewise, in the same way |
| Contrast | Shows a difference or opposing direction | however, by contrast, conversely, on the other hand |
| Alternative / Replacement | Replaces one possibility with another | instead, rather |
| Cause / Result | Shows that one idea follows from another | therefore, thus, consequently, accordingly, as a result |
| Example / Illustration | Gives a specific case | for example, for instance, specifically, in particular |
| Sequence / Time | Shows order or timing | first, next, later, subsequently, meanwhile, finally |
| Concession | Acknowledges something but continues despite it | nevertheless, nonetheless, even so, still, admittedly, granted |
| Restatement / Clarification | Expresses the same idea differently | in other words, that is, put differently |
| Emphasis | Strengthens or highlights a point | indeed, in fact, notably |
| Conclusion / Summary | Draws ideas together | ultimately, overall, in sum |
Do not make the mistake of thinking that words within a single category are completely interchangeable.
However, for example, nevertheless, instead, and conversely may all be contrast words, yet they each serve a different function.
Knowing what those functions are is more helpful than remembering fifty other transitional words.
This exercise is meant to assist students in mastering all SAT English transition words which appear in the Writing and Language test. The questions in the worksheet concentrate on the logical connection between sentences rather than on grammatical errors or sentence structure. It is a good tool for developing skills needed in the exam.

Addition transition signals that the second point heads in the same direction as the first.
Some common ones are:
also
For instance:
The telescope enabled astronomers to see much fainter objects. Furthermore, higher resolution helped in seeing details which were invisible using previous devices.
The second sentence talks about yet another advantage of the telescope. The sentence is neither in opposition to nor a consequence of the first one.
The similarity transitions like similarly and likewise indicate that there is some similarity between two situations.
For example:
Northern migrants migrate in September. Similarly, southern migrants begin migrating before winter.
Both types of migrants migrate in a similar way.
Examples include:
instead
Example:
Earlier theories suggested that the strength of the material would decrease under high pressure conditions. However, experiments have demonstrated that the strength increases.
The theory and experiment contradict each other.
However represents a contrast.
Nevertheless introduces a stronger meaning of “despite what was previously mentioned.”
Comparison:
The two species are almost indistinguishable in appearance. However, their genetic makeup differs considerably.
Straightforward contrast.
Now:
The first study was based on a small sample. Nevertheless, two other studies yielded similar results.
The fact of the small sample raises some doubt about the results; however, the idea introduced afterwards still holds true despite this doubt.
This is a concession relationship.
from the very beginning.
Such transition words are:
therefore
thus
consequently
accordingly
as a consequence
so
Example:
Due to the heavy rain, the level of the river went up above the usual one. As a consequence, some paths near it had to be closed.
It means that the closure results from the flooding.
One of the most common SAT mistakes is using therefore just because two sentences deal with the same information.
Similarity is not equal to cause-and-effect relationship.
Ask yourself whether the first thought really resulted in the second.
This study guide breaks down all SAT English transition words into clear, test-focused categories. It helps students identify the logical relationship between sentences, making transition questions faster and more accurate on test day.

Example transitions move from a general claim to a specific illustration.
Common examples include:
Example:
Some animals alter their behavior when seasonal temperatures change. For example, certain desert rodents become active later at night during the hottest months.
The second sentence provides one case that illustrates the broader first statement.
A useful check is:
Could I put “one example is…” before the second idea?
If yes, an example transition may work.
These transitions show when events happen or the order in which steps occur.
Common examples include:
Example:
Researchers first calibrated each sensor under controlled laboratory conditions. Next, they installed the sensors at the field site.
The second event follows the first in a sequence.
Be careful with meanwhile.
“Meanwhile” does not simply mean “next.” It usually suggests that something occurs at approximately the same time as something else.
Sometimes the second idea does not add new evidence or contradict the first. Instead, it explains the same idea in a clearer or more specific way.
Common transitions include:
Example:
The species is endemic to the island. In other words, it occurs naturally nowhere else.
The second sentence restates the meaning of “endemic.”
This relationship is different from an example.
An example gives one case.
A restatement gives the same idea in another form.
Use this process before looking at the choices.
Summarize it in a few words.
You do not need to memorize every detail.
Now summarize the idea after the blank.
Ask whether the second idea:
Only now look at the answer choices.
If you predicted contrast, choices such as therefore and for example can often be eliminated immediately.
Read the sentence once with your selected transition.
Do not change your answer simply because another choice sounds more formal.
Logic matters more than tone.
These three transitions are commonly confused because all can appear naturally at the beginning of a sentence.
Use this simple distinction:
| Transition | Ask Yourself |
|---|---|
| However | Does the second idea contrast with the first? |
| Therefore | Is the second idea a result of the first? |
| Moreover | Does the second idea add another supporting point? |
Example:
The treatment reduced inflammation in laboratory tests. ______, researchers plan to investigate whether the effect also occurs in humans.
The second idea follows from the first result.
Therefore is logical.
Now change the second sentence:
The treatment reduced inflammation in laboratory tests. ______, it had no measurable effect on pain.
Now the ideas contrast.
However works.
One small change in the relationship can completely change the correct transition.
However = contrast
Therefore = result
Moreover = another supporting point
For example = one specific illustration
However = general contrast
Nevertheless = something remains true despite the preceding limitation
Similarly = two things share a comparable feature
Moreover = another related point is being added
However signals contrast.
Instead usually suggests that one option, action, or explanation replaces another.
Example:
The research team initially planned to conduct interviews. Instead, it distributed an anonymous survey.
The survey replaces the interview plan.
Subsequently = later in time
Consequently = as a result
These words can appear in passages describing events, but their logical functions are completely different.
Yes. Try these original Digital SAT-style transition questions before reading the explanations.
For decades, astronomers assumed that the planet’s upper atmosphere was relatively stable. More recent measurements, ______, have revealed substantial changes in temperature over short periods.
Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?
A. for example
B. however
C. therefore
D. similarly
Correct Answer: B. however
Why: The new measurements challenge the earlier assumption, so the relationship is contrast.
Why the others fail: “For example” would require an illustration of the earlier statement. “Therefore” would require a result. “Similarly” would indicate agreement or similarity.
A newly developed coating reflects a larger percentage of incoming sunlight than conventional roofing materials. ______, buildings using the coating may require less energy for cooling during hot weather.
A. In contrast
B. Consequently
C. For instance
D. Meanwhile
Correct Answer: B. Consequently
Why: Lower cooling demand is presented as a result of reflecting more sunlight.
Some plants have developed unusual ways of dispersing their seeds. ______, the sandbox tree produces fruit that can burst open and propel seeds several meters from the parent plant.
A. Nevertheless
B. Therefore
C. For example
D. Instead
Correct Answer: C. For example
Why: The sandbox tree is a specific example of the general claim.
Before analyzing the samples, the researchers cleaned each container to remove possible contaminants. ______, they placed the prepared samples inside the containers and began the experiment.
A. Next
B. Nevertheless
C. Specifically
D. Consequently
Correct Answer: A. Next
Why: The passage describes two stages of a procedure in chronological order. The second happens after the first; it is not necessarily caused by it.
The first study included participants from only one geographic region. ______, its findings were later replicated in studies involving participants from several different countries.
A. For example
B. Therefore
C. Nevertheless
D. Similarly
Correct Answer: C. Nevertheless
Why: The limited original sample could weaken confidence in the finding, yet the later studies support it despite that limitation.
Researchers describe the insect as nocturnal. ______, the insect is active primarily at night rather than during the day.
A. In other words
B. However
C. Consequently
D. For instance
Correct Answer: A. In other words
Why: The second sentence explains what “nocturnal” means rather than giving an example or result.
The new archive contains thousands of previously unavailable photographs. ______, it includes handwritten field notes from several researchers whose work had been poorly documented.
A. By contrast
B. Moreover
C. As a result
D. Instead
Correct Answer: B. Moreover
Why: The second sentence adds another benefit or feature of the archive.
The restoration team considered replacing the damaged wooden panels with newly manufactured copies. ______, the team repaired and reused as much of the original material as possible.
A. Therefore
B. Similarly
C. Instead
D. For example
Correct Answer: C. Instead
Why: Repairing the existing material replaced the proposed plan to install new copies.
The northern population of the bird begins migrating before temperatures fall sharply. ______, the southern population departs before seasonal conditions become unfavorable.
A. Likewise
B. Nevertheless
C. Therefore
D. Specifically
Correct Answer: A. Likewise
Why: The two populations show comparable behavior.
Repeated flooding removed much of the loose soil surrounding the archaeological site. ______, previously buried sections of the structure became visible.
A. In contrast
B. Accordingly
C. For example
D. Meanwhile
Correct Answer: B. Accordingly
Why: The exposure of the structure follows logically from the loss of surrounding soil.
Stop listening for what “sounds right.”
Instead, describe the relationship without using any answer choice.
For example:
Idea 1: The method is inexpensive.
Idea 2: The method is less accurate than competing techniques.
Your prediction should be:
“The second idea introduces a drawback or contrast.”
Now look at the choices.
If you see:
only however matches the relationship.
This method works because it prevents the answer choices from influencing how you interpret the passage.
Students sometimes choose moreover or nevertheless because the word sounds academic.
The SAT does not reward formality. It rewards logic.
“After this happened” does not necessarily mean “because this happened.”
Subsequently signals time.
Consequently signals a result.
However, instead, nevertheless, and conversely can all move away from an earlier idea, but their meanings are not identical.
The logical relationship often depends on the sentence before the blank.
Read enough surrounding text to understand both ideas.
Knowing that therefore means “as a result” is useful.
Recognizing when one idea actually results from another is the real SAT skill.
Yes, but only to a point.
Knowing the common transition families saves time because you do not need to rediscover what nevertheless, consequently, or similarly means during the test.
But memorizing a long list without understanding relationships will not solve difficult questions.
A better study method is:
For example, if you repeatedly confuse however and therefore, your problem is probably not vocabulary. It is distinguishing contrast from cause-and-effect.
Do more than record the correct answer.
For each mistake, write:
1. What was the relationship?
Contrast? Result? Example? Addition? Sequence?
2. What did you originally think the relationship was?
3. Which clue in the passage did you miss?
4. Why was your answer logically wrong?
5. Which transition category should you review?
A useful error-log entry might look like:
Question type: Transition
My answer: Therefore
Correct answer: However
Mistake: I assumed the second event resulted from the first, but the passage actually contrasted the expected result with the observed result.
Review: Contrast vs. cause-and-effect.
That kind of review is far more useful than simply writing “Question 8 — wrong.”
You do not need to memorize hundreds of words.
Use one week to build the reasoning habit.
| Day | Focus |
| Day 1 | Addition, similarity and example |
| Day 2 | Contrast and alternatives |
| Day 3 | Cause, effect and conclusion |
| Day 4 | Sequence, restatement and emphasis |
| Day 5 | Concession and commonly confused transitions |
| Day 6 | Mixed SAT transition questions |
| Day 7 | Timed Reading and Writing practice + error review |
During Days 1–5, accuracy matters more than speed.
On Days 6–7, mix the categories so that the question no longer tells you what relationship to expect.

The College Board designs transition questions to test logical reasoning, not grammar alone. A sentence may sound correct, but if the transition creates the wrong relationship, the answer is wrong.
Strong transition-word mastery helps you:
On nearly every SAT test, multiple questions directly assess transition logic.
On the SAT Writing & Language section, transition questions usually appear in three formats:
The SAT does not test how advanced a word sounds. It tests whether you can correctly identify sentence relationships such as addition, contrast, cause-effect, example, or sequence.
| Trap Pair | Why Students Get It Wrong |
|---|---|
| however vs therefore | Contrast confused with result |
| for example vs therefore | Evidence confused with conclusion |
| moreover vs however | Formal tone mistaken for correct logic |
| then vs however | Sequence confused with contrast |
