AP Math Scoring Guidelines 2026 (Calculus AB & BC).
AP Calculus isn’t just about answering questions—it’s about understanding concepts, showing your reasoning clearly, and strategically focusing on the most impactful topics. With this scoring insight and targeted practice, USAn and NRI students can maximize their AP scores and stand out in academic applications.
Understanding how AP Calculus is scored helps you strategize better and aim confidently for a 4 or 5.
1. Exam Format & Weightage
Both exams follow this consistent structure:
Section I – Multiple Choice: 45 questions, 1 hr 45 min, 50% of total score.
Part A: 30 questions, no calculator.
Part B: 15 questions, calculator allowed.
Section II – Free Response: 6 questions, 1 hr 30 min, 50% of total score.
Definite/indefinite integrals, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
Applications of Integration
15–18%
Areas, volumes, average values
Differential Equations
6–8%
Slope fields, separation of variables
Miscellaneous / Functions Analysis
10–12%
Graphs of functions & derivatives, curve sketching
AP Calculus BC – Unit Weightage
BC covers everything from AB, plus additional topics. The weightage shifts slightly because of the added units:
Unit
Approx. Weightage
Focus Area
All AB Units (as above)
~65%
Same core foundation
Parametric, Polar & Vector Functions
10–12%
Derivatives, arc length, area in polar/parametric form
Series
17–20%
Convergence/divergence, Taylor/Maclaurin series, power series
2. Scoring Process
Multiple-choice: Each correct answer = 1 point. Wrong or blank = 0. Raw score is then scaled.
Free-response: Graded by trained AP Readers using detailed scoring guidelines (task-specific rubrics). Partial credit is awarded for correct steps—even with minor calculation mistakes.

Aim Smart, Not Just Hard: Focus on mastering high-weight units like integration, series, or applications of derivatives—especially for AB where units 5–6 are heavily tested. And for BC, give priority to sequences/series and parametric/polar topics.
Practice FRQs with Precision: Because scoring rewards correct logic, partial responses can still earn solid credit. Clearly explain each step.
Track Progress Transparently: Use the AB sub-score in BC to monitor mastery of core topics—even if you’re preparing for BC, this helps assess foundational understanding.
