AP Math Scoring Guidelines 2026 (Calculus AB & BC)

Understanding how AP Calculus is scored helps you strategize better and aim confidently for a 4 or 5.

1. Exam Format & Weightage

Both exams follow this consistent structure:

• Section I – Multiple Choice: 45 questions, 1 hr 45 min, 50% of total score.
  • Part A: 30 questions, no calculator.
  • Part B: 15 questions, calculator allowed.
• Section II – Free Response: 6 questions, 1 hr 30 min, 50% of total score.
  • Part A: 2 questions, calculator allowed.
  • Part B: 4 questions, no calculator.
    

AP Calculus AB – Unit Weightage

AP Calculus BC – Unit Weightage

BC covers everything from AB, plus additional topics. The weightage shifts slightly because of the added units:

Multiple-choice: Each correct answer = 1 point. Wrong or blank = 0. Raw score is then scaled.

Free-response: Graded by trained AP Readers using detailed scoring guidelines (task-specific rubrics). Partial credit is awarded for correct steps—even with minor calculation mistakes.

AP Calculus AB (2025 data):

• Scores of 5: ~21.4% of students
• Scores of 4: ~27.8%
• Passing (3+): ~64.4%
• Mean score: ~3.22
  

AP Calculus BC (2025 data):

• Scores of 5: ~47.7%
• Passing (3+): ~80.9%
• Mean score: ~3.92
