When students study under a US curriculum, IB, A-Level, or any other international board, certain additional eligibility conditions and equivalency requirements apply for NEET and MBBS admissions in India under the NRI quota.

Understanding your citizenship category is the very first and most crucial step before you register for NEET or apply for MBBS admission under the NRI quota.
To qualify for NEET-UG under the NRI or equivalent quota, you must belong to one of the following categories: NRI, OCI, or PIO. Let’s go through each with simple examples.
| Category | Description |
| NRI (Non-Resident Indian) | Indian citizen living abroad for over 183 days in a financial year |
| OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) | Foreign citizen of Indian origin holding an OCI card issued by the Indian government |
| PIO (Person of Indian Origin) | Foreign citizen of Indian ancestry (except Pakistan or Bangladesh origin) now merged with OCI |
An Indian citizen living abroad for employment, business, education, or other reasons for more than 183 days in a financial year falls under this category.
Example: A student born to Indian parents working in the USA, UAE, Singapore, or similar countries often holds an Indian passport but resides overseas. Such students are classified as NRI candidates.
An OCI is a foreign citizen of Indian origin who possesses an OCI card issued by the Government of India.
Example: A student born in the US to Indian-origin parents who holds a US passport along with an OCI card falls under this category.
If you have any doubts about which category applies to you, feel free to ask in the comments below, and we’ll clarify it for you.
Earlier a separate category, the PIO category has now been merged with OCI.
A foreign citizen (except those of Pakistan or Bangladesh origin) whose parents or grandparents were Indian citizens under the Constitution of India is considered a PIO.
Example: A US citizen of Indian heritage without an Indian passport but with valid proof of Indian ancestry will be recognized as a PIO (now treated as OCI).
If you belong to any of the above categories, you are eligible for NEET in terms of nationality.
This criterion is simple and straightforward:
This is a critical area and can be slightly complex for NRI students studying in international curricula. Let’s break it down clearly.
| Requirement Type | Description |
| Class / Grade Requirement | Must have completed 10+2 or equivalent. Grade 12 results can be submitted later if pending during the NEET exam. |
| Subject Requirement | Must have studied PCB/Biotechnology, and English. Easier for CBSE students, but may vary for US, IB, or A-Level curricula. |
You must have completed 10+2 (or equivalent) education.
If your Grade 12 results are not available at the time of the NEET exam, you can update them later during the NEET admission process.
You must have studied the following subjects in Grades 11 and 12:
These subjects are mandatory for NEET-UG eligibility.
This is typically easy for Indian students and for NRI students studying in CBSE-affiliated schools abroad (like those in the UAE, Oman, Qatar, or Saudi Arabia).
However, it becomes challenging for NRI students following US, IB, or A-Level curricula, where subject structures differ.
There are two main challenges for students studying under foreign boards:
Both these challenges are already addressed by TestprepKart.
You can download our free NEET NRI eBook or watch our detailed video guide (link in the description) to understand the complete process for subject compliance and AIU equivalence.

Meeting academic eligibility is just as important as qualifying NEET-UG itself. For NRI students from US, IB, or Cambridge (A-Level) boards, here’s what you must know:
If you are pursuing:
You must obtain an AIU equivalency certificate that converts your grades or GPA into the Indian percentage format.
The AIU (Association of Indian Universities) is the authorized body for issuing these certificates.
For example:
Without this AIU certificate, Indian universities and NEET authorities may not recognize your foreign transcripts, so it’s a must-have document for validation and eligibility under the NEET NRI quota admission seat allotment process.
You can find full details in our NEET NRI eBook (link below).
Students and parents should keep all necessary documents ready well in advance.
A downloadable NEET NRI document checklist PDF is available below for your convenience.
| Document | Description |
| NEET-UG Scorecard | Proof of NEET qualification. |
| Passport (Student & Parent) | Identity and nationality proof. |
| Visa or OCI Card | Confirms NRI or OCI status. |
| Class 10 & 12 Mark Sheets | Academic proof of PCB subjects. |
