Qualifying NEET-UG is only the first step toward admission in MBBS or BDS. The real decision of which college and seat you secure is finalized through the NEET counselling process.
This counselling is conducted online by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) at the national level and by state authorities at the state level. Every Indian student and every NRI/OCI student living abroad must participate in this process to claim a seat.
Download NowAt the national level, MCC manages admissions for AIQ, Deemed Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, and AFMC.
At the state level, each state authority conducts counselling for 85% of government quota seats and all private colleges in that state. This includes NRI quota seats offered by state and private institutions.
NEET counselling is divided into different categories depending on seat share and admission authority. This structure helps Indian students and NRIs choose the right option.
| Category | Seat Share | Conducted By |
| All India Quota (AIQ) | 15% govt seats (open to all) | MCC |
| State Quota | 85% govt + 100% private | State authorities |
| Private & Deemed Universities | Private (state), Deemed (MCC) | State / MCC |
| Central Institutes | AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, AFMC | MCC |
For NRIs, counselling is done through MCC (for Deemed Universities) and state authorities (for private/government NRI seats). Fees are usually payable in USD or INR equivalent, so financial preparation is essential.
To register for counselling, students must first qualify NEET-UG 2025.
| Requirement | Details |
| General Category | 50th percentile |
| OBC / SC / ST | 40th percentile |
| PwD | 45th percentile |
| Age | Minimum 17 years by 31st December 2025 |
| Education | Passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English |
For NRI/OCI/PIO students, the same NEET qualification is mandatory even if they studied abroad.
Students must prepare documents in advance. Missing even one document can cause rejection.
The registration is online, and without it, no student can claim a seat. Both Indian and NRI students must complete this step.
Counselling begins after NEET results in June, and both Indian and NRI students should track MCC and state portals closely.
| Month | Process |
| June 2025 | NEET Results declared |
| July 2025 | AIQ Round 1 + State Round 1 |
| August 2025 | AIQ Round 2 + State Round 2 |
| September 2025 | Mop-Up Round (Private/Deemed) |
| October 2025 | Stray Vacancy Round |
| Oct/Nov 2025 | Classes begin |
The NEET counselling process is conducted in multiple rounds to ensure every seat is filled. Each round serves a specific purpose, and both Indian and NRI candidates should understand them to plan their admission strategy.
This is the initial allotment of seats based on NEET rank, category, and filled preferences.
Seats left vacant or surrendered after Round 1 are filled in this round.
This round is mainly for private and deemed universities and is very important for NRI students.
This is the last round of the counselling process, managed directly by colleges.
Seat allotment depends on NEET rank, category, seat availability, and order of preferences.
Tie-breakers are applied if two students have the same marks: biology score, chemistry score, fewer wrong answers, and candidate’s age.
Once allotted, candidates must confirm admission quickly.
They must report to the college with original documents, pay tuition fees, and either accept the seat, wait for upgradation in the next round, or exit before the deadline.

Cut-offs vary for government, private, deemed, and NRI quota seats. Higher scores open top institutes, while lower scores can still secure seats in deemed or NRI quota.
| College Type | NEET Score Requirement (Approx.) |
| AIIMS Delhi & MAMC Delhi | 670+ marks |
| Other AIIMS & Top Govt Colleges | 630–660 marks |
| Average Government Colleges | 580–620 marks |
| Private Medical Colleges | 500–580 marks |
| Deemed Universities | 450–550 marks |
| NRI Quota (Govt/Private/Deemed) | 350–500 marks |
AFMC Pune requires MCC registration, followed by a separate interview, aptitude test, and medical fitness check.
ESIC medical colleges reserve seats for wards of insured persons, and their counselling is also conducted by MCC.
Many government medical colleges require students to serve in rural or government hospitals after graduation.
The bond period usually ranges from 1–2 years, and if students refuse, they must pay a penalty of ₹5–₹20 lakh depending on the state.
A small error can cost students their admission, so caution is necessary.
