Yes, some government medical colleges in India offer NRI quota seats, but the quota is state-specific. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Goa, Mizoram, and selected other states may offer NRI quota seats depending on the latest counselling rules.
However, many government medical colleges do not have a separate NRI quota. In those colleges, NRI/OCI students may apply through AIQ or other eligible counselling routes, but AIQ should not be treated as NRI quota.

Students applying under the NRI category must be Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), or foreign nationals. Proof of NRI or OCI status is mandatory at the time of counselling and admission.
All NRI students must have qualified the NEET-UG examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the same academic year. NEET qualification is compulsory for both NRI Quota and All-India Quota (AIQ) admissions.
The candidate must be at least 17 years old as of 31st December of the year of admission to be eligible for MBBS admission in any Indian medical college.
NRI students must have successfully completed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects from a recognized board.
A minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) is required for General and EWS category students. Relaxation in marks is applicable for SC/ST/OBC candidates as per NEET-UG regulations.
NRI Quota: Admissions are managed by the respective State Counselling Authorities.
All-India Quota (AIQ): Conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Candidates can apply as NRIs or through NRI Sponsorship in NEET, where they may be sponsored by a first-degree relative such as a parent, sibling, grandparent, uncle, or aunt. Valid documents proving both the relationship and the NRI status of the sponsor are required during counselling.
NRI Quota: Tuition fees range from USD 25,000–75,000 per year, approximately ₹20–60 lakhs, depending on the state and college.
15% AIQ: Follows the regular government-college fee structure, usually between ₹10,000–₹1 lakh per year.
Some state government medical colleges reserve NRI seats within their 85% state quota. Eligible NRIs or those sponsored by first-degree relatives can apply with valid proof. Counselling is held by state authorities, and fees range from ₹20–60 lakhs, or USD 25,000–75,000, per year.
NRI and OCI candidates can apply through MCC under the 15% All-India Quota. These are open merit-based seats with no separate NRI quota or higher fee, and the admission process and fee structure are the same as for Indian students.

The student must appear for NEET-UG and secure the required qualifying marks for MBBS admission.
Confirm whether the student is applying through NRI quota, AIQ, state counselling, or foreign national category.
Collect passport, visa/OCI proof, NRI certificate, relationship proof, sponsorship affidavit, NEET scorecard, and Class 10 and 12 documents.
Register on the correct counselling portal. AIQ seats are handled through MCC, while NRI quota seats are usually handled by the respective state counselling authority.

Every NRI student has a different admission route depending on passport status, NEET score, documents, sponsor eligibility, and counselling category. These examples show how proper planning helped students choose the right path.
Challenge: Priya was studying AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Physics C in Houston. Her parents wanted her to prepare for NEET, but they were unsure how to balance AP coursework, NEET preparation, exam location, and admission planning.
