How to Choose IB Subjects to Maximize Your Score?
The International Baccalaureate program has divided their curriculum into the six subject groups with both high and standard level format. One should make their choices wisely as each and every subject has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages and disadvantages of a subject vary from person to person as no two people have the same level of interest in a subject. The Six Categories are: This course has three subjects. There are 3 subjects in this paper with a number of languages.How to Choose IB Subjects to Maximize Your Score?
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
Skills required: The students who have a good grasp of essay writing and an interest in studying English for 6 periods a week.
Advantages: There are a lot of books to read as English Lit. The students interested in advertising, speeches, newspaper articles etc. as well as novels and poetry should opt for this subject.
Disadvantages: It is very difficult to score a perfect 7 in Lit/Lang. The exam is highly lengthy in nature.
Group 2: Language Acquisition
French AB
Skills required The students who have Persuasive skill can opt for this subject.
Advantages: Students who have learnt French before can be lucky enough to score a perfect 7.
Disadvantages: One may not get to learn much, the students who have done French IGCSE you will need to completely fail it to get into Ab Initio.
French A Lit/Lang
Skills required- The students who have a strong grasp of grammar (accents, according, verb tenses) and ability to express yourself orally with ease should opt for this course.
Advantages: It is a bilingual diploma. It is similar to English language and it also covers a lot of advertising and culture. There are many opportunities for local outings, with also a potential trip to Paris.
Disadvantages: The books are difficult to understand in terms of language. The grading is quite harsh as the 90% scorer gets 6 only.
French Lit. A
Skills required- The students need to be fluent and be good at analyzing to passages and poems to succeed in class.
Advantages: There is a lot to read from different styles and authors around the world.
Disadvantages: One has to be independent and needs a lot of spare time to read all the books on the syllabus.
French B
Skills required- The students who have spoken French for a minimum of 2 years and have an Ability to do homework on time.
Advantages: There is no reading to be done.
Disadvantages: There are no French class levels.
Spanish Ab
Skills required- The students who have learnt any Latin language before.
Advantages: The classes are generally small which enable students to perform well and achieve high grades.
Disadvantages: The students who have done Spanish IGCSE are not allowed to take up this course.
Spanish B
Skills required- The students should be expressive in nature.
Advantages: The classes are highly interactive and the staff is super-friendly in nature. The classes are conversation based hence one gets a lot of opportunities to learn from their peers as well as teachers.
Disadvantages: One has to brainstorm a lot.
Group 3: Individuals and societies
History
Skills required- The students should be competent. He or she should be able to listen to their teacher and adjust their writing style to the requirements of IB History.
Advantages: A highly interesting subject which looks at various aspects of life such as politics, wars and daily life. The major portion of the course is done during the IGCSE History course
Disadvantages: The subject demands students to go through and write the gargantuan amount of assignments. This can be done in the form of home essays, in-class essays or pages of notes.
Geography
Skills required- The students should be ready to draw diagrams or sketch maps as well as take notes on documentaries. The student should be able to write fairly quickly as well as he or she should be able to remember specific details, dates or figures from case studies.
Advantages: One gets to discuss current issues associated with geography that aren’t discussed daily. One doesn’t have to write long essays, one gets to watch documentaries.
Disadvantages: The student should be able to write quickly and express themselves properly as the papers are not generous on time.
Group 4: Sciences
ESS
Skills required- The students should be able to memorize definitions, should be able to look at an environmental problem from several perspectives and should have a bent towards fresh outdoors.
Advantages: The subject contains all the easier parts of Biology and Geography; it is mixed with fun studies about animals and the occasional hike in the Jura.
Disadvantages: The subject requires a lot of work to be handwritten.
Group 5: Mathematics
Math Analysis and Approaches (SL)
Skills required- The better you perform at math the easier it gets.
Advantages: It is the easiest math course and is a very good option for all those who struggle with math problems.
Disadvantages: Many people claim that one has to do nothing in this subject to core good marks but that is all false.
Group 6: The Arts
Arts
Skills required- The students with some artistic talent.
Advantages: The students should have a ‘creative-cool-fashionable-indie’ aura to them.
Disadvantages: The course is one of the most time-consuming courses, one needs to put a lot of efforts to achieve good scores.
Theatre
Skills required- The students should be organized in nature while keeping a journal. They should always be full of energy and extrovert.
Advantages: This subject is a highly energetic, collaborative and creative form of art.
Disadvantages: It is mandatory to keep your journal up to date.
