Which one is Better? IB or IGCSE?
Which One to Choose? IB or IGCSE? The question ‘Which one to select? IB ((International Baccalaureate) Diploma or IGCSE ((International General Certificate of Secondary Education)?” seems simple enough. But in practice, the answer is not that simple. Let us critically analyse the pros and cons of these two internationally recognised educational programmes. That will help the students to choose the right course cut out for their attitude, ambition and geographical location. IB is an educational framework which is not typically a school curriculum. But IGCSE is designed as a school curriculum system outright. From the date of inception in 1968 IB is a non-profit educational organisation. IB offers four educational programmes for children aged 3–19. As such there are no formal examinations or government affiliations as far as International Baccalaureate is concerned. Instead, IB evaluates and validates the grades of final-year school students. Based on the assessment, deserving students are awarded the certificate. It may vary with the level of accomplishment. IGCSE is an adaptation of the British GCSE qualification and meant for international students at a secondary level. The ranking is for each individual subjects the students are opting for. As an educational guidance and framework, IB does not adhere to any particular syllabus. IB is an educational framework and not a curriculum. On the other hand, ISCSE focuses on the examination-oriented course based on the geographical location. The contents are well defined and focussed. IB is aiming at a gradual level of imparting knowledge to the ultimate diploma with mastery in particular skill and subject. The process of education is on a continuous basis. The IGCSE refers to a pre-defined, geographic specific, school oriented and content-based goal. The IB has no schools of their own, but schools can opt to teach IB in the PYP and MYP level and charge for the services. On the outset, IGCSE is designed to serve international students. IGCSE/GCSE is based on the English national curriculum. IB’s MYP (11-16 years old) is designed to suit any curriculum of a particular school. Compared to this, the IGSCE is an exam typically finishes at age 16. This is after a rigorous course in the preceding two years. In the absence of a specified curriculum, the IB programme requires an administrator to oversee. Besides exam oriented coaching, the geographical culture, and tradition and school reputation are taken into consideration. In IGCSE, a frill proof, student centred and straightforward approach is intended for a higher level of education. The students are granted external certificates, grades and marks. The teachers are expected to have a fully fit teaching note oriented approach in teaching. As such the time allocated for meetings, resources and references are limited. Due to this loyalty factor, most of the IB students consider themselves alumni of not their school, but of the IB as well. IB endorses and emphasises the role of schools, teachers and board. The flexibility IB offers something unique within the framework of different curriculums. The well-laid examination pattern can assess the calibre of the students in an international arena. The higher education institutes can also get the cram of the students. The teachers relish the idea of making their curriculum. The international exposure especially for parents with transferable jobs, IB is ideal. The parents also will be able to judge the progress of their kids. Whereas IB is popular on the global front, the IGCSE is slightly predominant in the Southeast Asian countries. There is no restriction on the curriculum whatsoever in IB coaching. Also, IB can be adapted to regional or international with ease. Cost wise the IGCSE is cheaper to IB, and it is easier to implement. No wonder IGCSE, the skills-based than content-based is preferred by Asian parents and teachers. IGCSE offers are a seamless entry to IBDP courses. The job market for IB on an international level is far superior to that of IGCSE. The strain of preparation on the students is much lower than IGCSE. The external examinations conducted at schools make the IGCSE unique. The IB imposes the schedule of teachers as well as keeping the curriculum streamlined every time. This is contrary to the IGCSE curriculum which does not call for teachers to coordinate with other departments with anyone outside of their department to make the material more rich and meaningful for students. The IB programme is bit demanding. IB is more of analytical and calls for thinking. Incidentally, the popularity IB is limited globally as it is branded for ‘the wealthy lot'. In turn who conducts the IB programmes tend to charge the students more. The exam-driven IGCSE systems are killing the creativity and thinking process and indirectly promote mugging up. IGCSE schools, having no coursework assessment would play safe and keep the same old system with clockwork precision. The handicaps of IB are The IB is managed by an independent cross-countries entity based in Geneva, Switzerland. It is not the official secondary school certificate of any particular country as it is instead offered by some.
