MATHCOUNTS

A school-based contest ladder with four different rounds, not one bubble sheet. This page is the counselor manual: Sprint vs Target vs Team vs Countdown, how scores are built, and how chapter/state advancement actually works.

What we offer

If you want MATHCOUNTS prep, here is what TestPrepKart puts on the table.

mathcounts.org already owns registration, official rules, and coach handbooks. Our job is different: turn Sprint, Target, and Team practice into a weekly Grades 6-8 plan so February chapter meets are not a surprise.

What it is

Team culture plus individual scores, with different rules each hour.

Parents who prep MATHCOUNTS like AMC 8 leave Sprint calculator habits and Team collaboration untrained. The useful story is round literacy.

School-first

Coaches register schools, pick team/individuals, and run fall/winter practice.

Team of 4

Only one school team (up to 4) competes as the team. Incomplete teams still divide by 4.

Winter-spring ladder

Chapter in February, state in March, nationals later for qualifiers.

EligibilityStudents in Grades 6-8 participating through a registered school program (or NSC rules when a school will not support participation).
How to registerSchool coach completes Competition Series registration on mathcounts.org. Parents ask the school first. NSC registration exists only when the school will not register/support the student.
FeesPaid through MATHCOUNTS registration (school competitor pricing, Title I discounts, and NSC fees publish each season). Tutoring with TestPrepKart is separate USD pricing on grade hubs.

Four rounds

Train each round like a different sport.

Sprint Round

30 questions · 40 minutes · no calculator. Speed plus accuracy. Later items get harder.

  • Individuals and team members both sit Sprint
  • Ties often look at Sprint strength first

Target Round

8 questions in 4 pairs · about 30 minutes · calculator allowed. Pair pacing matters.

  • Each Target correct is worth 2 in the Individual Score
  • Students and team members both sit Target

Team Round

10 questions · 20 minutes · calculator allowed · teammates may talk. Only the school team sits this round.

  • Individuals registered separately do not sit Team
  • Team Score adds 2 points per Team Round correct

Countdown Round

Fast oral head-to-head for top individuals based on Sprint/Target. No calculator. May be official, for fun, or omitted.

  • When official, it can decide final individual ranks
  • Nationals conduct Countdown officially
Scoring

Individual max 46. Team max 66. Incomplete teams still divide by 4.

Individual Score

Sprint correct + 2 × Target correct. With 30 Sprint and 8 Target questions, the maximum is 30 + 16 = 46.

Sprint ×1Target ×2Max 46

Team Score

(Sum of team Individual Scores ÷ 4) + 2 × Team Round correct. Maximum 66. Teams with fewer than 4 still divide by 4.

School to nationals

Advancement is a ladder, not a single Saturday trophy.

Dates below follow MATHCOUNTS published patterns (chapter Feb, state Mar). Confirm your chapter/state on mathcounts.org.

  1. Fall / winter

School practice + School Competition. Coach uses school materials and often a January school meet to choose chapter competitors.

  2. February

Chapter Competition. Sprint, Target, Team (+ optional Countdown). Winning team advances; top individuals not on that team also advance (minimum path typically 6 Mathletes).

  3. March

State Competition. Same written rounds. Top individuals and winning-team coach can earn Nationals travel support per national rules.

  4. Spring

National Competition. Sprint, Target, Team, and official Countdown. Invitation-only for state qualifiers.

Grade-by-grade guide

What MATHCOUNTS feels like in Grades 6-8

Grade 6 · what this exam is probing

First-year Mathletes often need Sprint stamina and Target pair pacing more than fancy algebra. We keep Grade 6 fluency warm and add round-specific drills.

Competition Series · Grades 6-8 · school team or individual

Number senseRatiosGeometry basicsSprint pacing

Skills we expect to see

  • Sprint: 30 questions in 40 minutes, no calculator
  • Target: 8 questions in pairs, calculator allowed
  • Possible Team Round if selected for the school team of up to 4
  • School competition in winter helps coaches choose chapter competitors

Grade 7 · what this exam is probing

Proportional reasoning and multi-step Target items start separating individual scores.

ProportionalityCountingGeometryTarget pairs

Skills we expect to see

  • Individual score = Sprint correct + 2× Target correct (max 46)
  • Team score averages individual scores (/4) then adds 2× Team Round correct (max 66)
  • Chapter usually February; state usually March
  • Countdown may be official, for fun, or omitted depending on chapter/state

Grade 8 · what this exam is probing

Grade 8 Mathletes often chase chapter/state advancement. Still a different sport from AMC 10 multiple-choice scoring.

Last Competition Series year for most students

Algebra thinkingGeometryCounting / logicTeam collaboration

Skills we expect to see

  • Only one school team (up to 4) advances on the team path; individuals can still advance
  • Winning chapter team plus top individuals not on that team typically advance to state
  • National invitational path for top state individuals and winning-team coach
  • Calculators allowed in Target/Team, never in Sprint/Countdown

Parent tips

Support the team without coaching from the hallway.

  • Ask the school who the MATHCOUNTS coach is and how tryouts work.
  • Do not sneak a calculator into Sprint practice habits.
  • If your child is an individual, still celebrate Sprint/Target growth.
  • Religious-observance conflicts have published advance-testing rules; ask the coordinator early.

Why families choose it

Team math with real advancement stakes, without pretending it is AMC scoring.

Done well, MATHCOUNTS builds speed, collaboration, and meet stamina. Done poorly, it becomes one mixed worksheet pile. We coach the first path.

NRI · Indian-origin families

US school team culture explained without assuming you grew up with it.

FAQ

Questions parents ask about MATHCOUNTS

What is MATHCOUNTS?

A national middle-school program run by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. The Competition Series has school, chapter, state, and national levels, with Sprint, Target, Team, and (often) Countdown rounds for Grades 6-8.

How is it different from AMC 8 or MOEMS?

AMC 8 is one January multiple-choice sitting. MOEMS is five monthly short olympiads. MATHCOUNTS is a multi-round meet with Sprint/Target/Team (and sometimes Countdown), plus a chapter→state→national ladder.

How do students register?

Usually through a school coach who registers the school for the Competition Series on mathcounts.org. A school may register one team of up to 4 plus up to 10 individuals (up to 14 chapter competitors). If a school will not register, MATHCOUNTS describes a non-school competitor (NSC) path with its own rules and fees.

What are the rounds?

Sprint: 30 questions, 40 minutes, no calculator. Target: 8 questions in four pairs, about 30 minutes, calculator allowed. Team: 10 questions, 20 minutes, calculator allowed, teammates may talk. Countdown: fast oral round for top individuals where conducted; no calculator.

How is scoring done?

Individual Score = Sprint correct + 2× Target correct (max 46). Team Score = (sum of team Individual Scores ÷ 4) + 2× Team Round correct (max 66). Teams under 4 are still divided by 4, so incomplete teams are at a disadvantage.

When are competitions?

School competitions are typically late fall/winter (coach chooses). Chapter competitions generally February. State competitions generally March. Nationals are in spring (for example, May in Washington, DC for recent cycles). Confirm live critical dates on mathcounts.org.

Are calculators allowed?

Not in Sprint or Countdown. Yes in Target, Team, and tiebreakers when used, under MATHCOUNTS calculator rules.

Can you guarantee chapter or state advancement?

No. Advancement depends on that year's field and coordinator policies. We can build round skills, team habits, and a calm meet plan.

Where are official resources?

mathcounts.org: official rules/procedures, registration guides, chapter/state search, school handbook materials for registered coaches. We do not host their coach dashboard.
