A once-a-year international multiple-choice contest that US families, especially many Indian-American households, treat as a spring milestone. This page is the counselor manual: register on time, understand 3/4/5 scoring, prep without turning March into panic.
Math Kangaroo USA already owns registration, March dates, and awards pages. Our job is different: build a calm contest habit for Grades 3-10 so March is not a surprise worksheet dump, especially for Indian-American and NRI families who treat Kangaroo as a spring milestone.

| Full name | Math Kangaroo (USA administration of the international Kangaroo without Borders contest) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Optional multiple-choice math contest for Grades 1-12 (we coach the Grades 3-10 band) |
| When | Once yearly, typically third Thursday in March (2026: March 19 per Math Kangaroo USA memo) |
| Time | 75 minutes |
| Length | 24 questions (Grades 1-4, max 96) or 30 questions (Grades 5-12, max 120) |
| Scoring | Mix of 3-, 4-, and 5-point items; no wrong-answer penalty |
| Parent registration | Yes, through mathkangaroo.org centers (school or public / remote options) |
| Our coaching band | Grades 3-10 US families, including NRI and Indian-origin students |
Questions are chosen by the international committee. Many are word problems with a twist. Strong school grades help, but they do not automatically produce a calm March morning.
| Eligibility | Students who can read and work independently. Take your school grade level or higher, never lower. One participation per year. |
|---|---|
| How to register | Through a Math Kangaroo center on mathkangaroo.org (school invitation code for private centers, or public centers listed on the site). Ask the school to host if it does not yet. |
| Fees | Parent-paid contest fee. Recent published figures: about $18 at educational centers, about $28 at remote centers that ship gifts home; late registration costs more. Confirm the live fee table before paying. TestPrepKart tutoring is a separate USD fee on grade hubs. |
| Our coaching band | Grades 3-10, with Indian faculty teaching in English. We coach contest habits alongside school Math Prep. |
Dates below follow Math Kangaroo USA's published 2026 memo pattern. Always re-check the current year on mathkangaroo.org before you act.
Regular registration. Best window. Confirm whether your school is a private center or you need a public center.
Center headcount. Centers may need a minimum roster (Math Kangaroo has used a mid-December threshold). Do not wait until February to ask your school.
Late registration. Still possible in many years, with a higher fee. Virtual-center deadlines may extend further. Confirm live rules.
Competition day. Paper or online at the center's assigned time. 75 minutes. Bring calm, not a new topic list.
Scores, percentiles, awards. National Top 20 and state Top 3 lists publish later. Local ceremonies often land in late spring.
Official registration and center search: mathkangaroo.org. We help you plan prep around those deadlines; we do not collect Kangaroo contest fees.
| Band | Questions | Point mix | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 1-4 | 24 in 75 minutes | 8×3 + 8×4 + 8×5 | 96 |
| Grades 5-12 | 30 in 75 minutes | 10×3 + 10×4 + 10×5 | 120 |
We mention awards so parents are not surprised later. We do not sell false ranking promises.
Top 20 scores at each grade nationwide are recognized. Gold, silver, and bronze medals typically mark national 1st-3rd, with additional national recognitions for the broader Top 20.
Top 3 scores at each grade in each state receive state-level ribbon recognition and related certificates/gifts as published for that year.
| Official Math Kangaroo covers | What TestPrepKart adds |
|---|---|

| Who can sit, grade-level rules, paper vs online center sessions. | Help choosing whether Kangaroo should share the calendar with EOC / AMC goals, without pretending one worksheet set covers all. |
| National and state winner lists after the contest. | Honest post-score review: what to keep for next year, what to ignore, how it connects to the grade hub. |

Each tab names the question count for that level, what usually blocks kids, and how we prep without cloning a state-test page.
Early Kangaroo is playful but not trivial. Kids who only drill school worksheets often freeze on odd wording. We keep number sense warm and add short puzzle sets.
Level Grade 3 · 24 questions · 75 minutes · max 96
Multi-digit comfort plus fraction language starts to matter. Kangaroo still rewards noticing over grinding.
Level Grade 4 · 24 questions · 75 minutes · max 96
Jump to 30 questions. Pacing changes. Students who linger on every hard item leave easy points behind.
Level Grade 5 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
Ratios and early algebra language appear inside contest wrappers. School chapter tests are not enough rehearsal.
Level Grade 6 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
Proportional reasoning and denser word problems. Indian-American families often use Kangaroo as a spring enrichment marker.
Level Grade 7 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
Linear thinking and denser geometry/logic. Still a contest, not an Algebra I EOC dress rehearsal.
Level Grade 8 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
High-school Kangaroo still rewards creative noticing. Algebra I course strength helps, but contest items are not STAAR clones.
Level Grade 9 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
Geometry course students often enjoy Kangaroo spatial items, but ranking still needs broad puzzle stamina.
Level Grade 10 · 30 questions · 75 minutes · max 120
Grade level (or higher), registration window, and whether the school hosts.
Use the grade hub spine so contest reading is not blocked by weak fluency.
1:1 or group sessions that rehearse noticing, diagrams, and explanations.
Practice 3/4/5-point mixes and skip/return under a clock.
Shorter work, sleep plan, and a plain update on readiness.
Kangaroo will not replace state tests or Algebra I EOC. It can build puzzle stamina, careful reading, and a healthy competitive rhythm when coached honestly.
Indian-American and NRI families often want a reputable spring math contest that younger students can enter without jumping straight into AMC culture. Our Indian faculty coach in English, explain registration timelines, and keep school Math Prep aligned so Kangaroo does not become an orphan worksheet habit.
A live 1:1 puzzle session. Your child works real contest-style items. You leave with a written March plan.
Math Kangaroo USA runs once a year, typically on the third Thursday in March. For 2026 the published individual competition date was Thursday, March 19. Confirm the current year on mathkangaroo.org.
Parents register through a Math Kangaroo center (school private center or public center) on the official site. Regular registration has run mid-September through December 31; late registration continues into early February at a higher fee. Published fees have been about $18 at educational centers and about $28 at remote centers that ship gifts home. Always confirm the live fee table on mathkangaroo.org before paying.
Ask the school to become a center. If that fails, register at a public center listed on the Math Kangaroo site, or use options Math Kangaroo describes for remote / virtual participation (virtual/unproctored paths may not include the same gifts, awards, or formal ranking). Follow the current year memo.
Grades 1-4 take 24 questions (max 96). Grades 5-12 take 30 questions (max 120). Time is 75 minutes. Questions are split into 3-, 4-, and 5-point values. There is no penalty for wrong answers. The sum of earned points is the score.
No. Students may participate at their school grade level or a higher level, not a lower one. They may participate only once per year.
National Top 20 per grade are recognized (gold/silver/bronze for the top three nationally, with additional national recognitions). State Top 3 per grade receive ribbon-style state recognition. Participants at qualifying centers also receive certificates and participation gifts. Details change by year; see mathkangaroo.org/mks/awards.
No. Kangaroo is an international multiple-choice contest with its own March calendar and scoring. AMC 8 and MathCounts have different formats, seasons, and pathways. We can help you choose sequencing in a demo.
No. Rankings depend on that year's paper and national pool. We can build puzzle habits, pacing, and a calm March plan.
mathkangaroo.org (USA site): registration, FAQs, scoring explanation, awards, and annual memos. Registered students also receive access to prior-year video solutions as described by Math Kangaroo. We do not host their portal.
Math Kangaroo is a single annual multiple-choice contest (typically March) with grade-band papers and an awards culture many Indian-American families know. MOEMS is five monthly olympiads. AMC 8 is the MAA January gateway. We keep those paths separate on their own pages.
