The January gateway contest for middle-school problem solving. This page is the counselor manual: 25 questions in 40 minutes, the scoring rule families get wrong, how host registration works, and what AMC 8 does not unlock.
MAA already owns dates, host registration, and contest booklets. Our job is different: prepare Grades 6-8 with honest scoring strategy (never leave blank), middle-school contest topics, and a clear ladder note that AMC 8 does not unlock AIME.

| Format | 25 questions · 40 minutes · multiple choice |
| Scoring | 1 correct / 0 blank / 0 wrong · max 25 · no guessing penalty |

| Our coaching band | Grades 6-8 US families (advanced younger students case by case), including NRI / Indian-origin students |
AMC 8 rewards broad middle-school fluency plus triage under 40 minutes. It is not a state test, not a five-month MOEMS season, and not an AIME ticket.
| Eligibility | Grade 8 or below, and under 15.5 years on the day of the competition. No official minimum grade; advanced younger students may sit. |
|---|---|
| How to register | Through an MAA-approved competition site with physical premises. Ask the school first; otherwise use MAA's public host list and contact a nearby site. |
| Fees | Host registration + student bundles are paid to MAA by the site (early/regular/late bands publish each cycle). Families usually pay the host's pass-through cost. Tutoring is separate USD pricing on our grade hubs. |
| Our coaching band | Grades 6-8 focus, Indian faculty teaching in English, with clear talk about what AMC 8 can and cannot unlock. |
This is one of the most confusing parent steps. Here is the clean version.
Ask the school. Many middle schools already host. Ask the math department or contest coach in the fall.
If no school host. Search MAA's public list of registered sites (colleges, math circles, learning centers) and request a seat.
Host deadlines. MAA publishes early / regular / late host registration deadlines each cycle (example 2026-27: Oct 28 / Jan 5 / Jan 14). Confirm live dates on maa.org/amcreg.
Sit in January. On-site only under current MAA family guidance; remote proctoring is not the parent workaround.
We help you phrase the school ask and choose prep timing. We are not an MAA competition manager for public AMC seating unless separately arranged.
This is the counselor warning we put above the fold on purpose.
Correct = 1. Blank = 0. Wrong = 0. Maximum = 25. There is no penalty for guessing. Before time is called, every question should have an answer bubbled.
AMC 10/12 award partial credit for unanswered questions. Families who heard that rule sometimes tell AMC 8 students to leave hard items blank. On AMC 8 that advice costs points.
Introduce contest problem solving, build middle-school breadth, and create a clean January goal for Grades 6-8.
It is not an AIME qualifier. It is not a state accountability test. It is not MathCounts (team/sprint/target rounds).

Younger advanced students can sit; we still coach most families in this band. Each tab links into that grade's Math Prep hub.
Strong Grade 6 students can sit AMC 8. The later problems still bite. We keep ratio fluency warm and add contest timing without pretending every Grade 6 should chase Honor Roll.

Proportional reasoning, probability language, and geometry visualization start separating scores.
Core middle-school AMC 8 year for many families
Grade 8 is the classic AMC 8 year. Strong finishers often look toward AMC 10 next. Do not confuse AMC 8 scoring with AMC 10 blank strategy.
Last standard AMC 8 year · gateway toward AMC 10 later
School host or alternate approved site, plus the January window day.
Ratios, geometry, counting, and data on the matching grade hub.
1:1 or group sessions on AMC-style items and explanations.
Build to full 25-question / 40-minute rehearsals with bubble discipline.
Shorter review, sleep plan, and a plain readiness update.
Done well, AMC 8 builds breadth and timing. Done poorly, it becomes a panic packet and a misunderstood score report. We coach the first path.
Many of our Grades 6-8 families are Indian-origin or NRI and want a reputable US contest marker. Indian faculty teach in English, explain host registration, and keep school Math Prep aligned so AMC 8 is not an orphan worksheet stack.
A live 1:1 contest session. Your child works timed items. You leave with a written January plan.
The American Mathematics Competition 8, run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice contest for students in grade 8 and below.
No. AIME invitations come from strong AMC 10 / AMC 12 scores. AMC 8 is an earlier gateway contest. Families often mix this up; we say it plainly so January goals stay honest.
1 point for a correct answer, 0 for blank, 0 for wrong. Maximum is 25. There is no guessing penalty. Leaving questions blank throws away expected value. This is different from AMC 10/12, where unanswered questions earn partial credit.
Annually in January over a multi-day window; the host site chooses the day. For 2026-27 MAA lists January 21-27, 2027. Confirm the live window on maa.org.
Parents do not personally create an MAA host account for a child at home. An approved competition site (school, university, math circle, learning center) registers with MAA. Ask your school first. If it cannot host, search MAA's public list of registered sites and ask one nearby. Homeschools are not permitted as host organizations under MAA rules described for families.
Host sites pay MAA registration fees (early/regular/late bands publish each cycle) plus student bundle licensing (recently priced as bundles of 10). Families usually pay whatever the host passes through. Confirm current figures on maa.org/amcreg. TestPrepKart tutoring is a separate USD fee on grade hubs.
Middle-school topics: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry (including Pythagorean Theorem), spatial visualization, graphs and tables. Later items may touch beginning algebra.
No. Calculators, protractors, compasses, and graph paper are prohibited. Writing utensils, blank scratch paper, rulers, and erasers are allowed per MAA instructions.
No. Cutoffs change by year. We can build timing, content coverage, and the never-leave-blank habit.
