The Inception - Attacking Questions & Keeping The Question Open

Lesson 4:

Attacking The Questions – Keeping The Question Open – The Inception

Rephrase the Questions to Make Them “Open-Ended” and Think of Your Own Answer First

Have you ever thought that more than one choice “sounds right” on a Critical Reading question? This is usually a sign that you have not thought deeply enough about your own answer to the question before checking the choices. Remember, good test writers will always include choices that “sound right” but really aren’t right if you think about the passage. You can get “talked into” these wrong answers first. Therefore, it’s best to rephrase each Critical Reading question, if possible, so that it is an essay question or “open-ended” question rather than a multiple-choice question. Then, think of your own response before checking the choices. If you do it right, the right answer will “pop out” quickly and you won’t waste time thinking hard about each choice.

Practice “translating” Critical Reading questions to make them “open-ended” so you can think of your own answer.

Question:  The tone of the opening paragraph is best characterized as….

Translate:  What is the tone of the opening paragraph?

Find an answer to this, re-reading if necessary, then look for a match among  the choices.

Question:   The author implies that most people so not notice bias in the media because….

Translate:  Why (according to this author) don’t people notice bias in the media?

Find an answer to this, re-reading if necessary, then look for a match among the choices.

Single Paragraphs

Every Critical Reading section will contain several short passages that are single paragraphs about 100 words long,

The short, single-paragraph passages should be approached in the same way as the longer passages. The question will be of exactly the same type and basic difficulty as all the other Critical Reading questions.

Hello, I am Freddy, greetings from Testprepkart. Let me tell you the story of a movie Inception

The film opens with Cobb stranded on a beach and subsequently being taken to an elderly Japanese man named Saito. Saito presents Cobb with a proposition - instead of stealing information, he wants Cobb to perform "inception," which involves planting an idea in someone's mind through their dreams. Saito believes that inception is possible and desires Cobb to implant an idea in the mind of his business rival, Robert Fischer, in order to dismantle his father's influential energy corporation.

Cobb assembles a team of specialists for the job, including Arthur, his trusted partner, Eames, a skilled forger, Yusuf, a chemist who provides a potent sedative, and Ariadne, a talented architecture student who constructs the dream worlds. Together, they plan to enter Fischer's dreams and navigate through multiple layers of dreams to reach his subconscious.

Prior to the inception mission, Cobb discloses his troubled past. He was once happily married to a woman named Mal, with whom he experimented with shared dreaming, but they became trapped in a limbo-like dream state. Mal eventually lost touch with reality, convinced that the dream world was real, leading her to commit suicide and framing Cobb for her death. Ever since, Cobb has been a fugitive, unable to reunite with his children in the United States until he clears his name.

The team initiates their mission by sedating Fischer during a long-haul flight, enabling them to enter his dreams. They construct a dream within a dream within a dream, with each level delving deeper into Fischer's subconscious. While navigating these dream levels, they encounter various challenges, including projections of Fischer's mind that are trained to defend against intruders.

As they delve deeper, Cobb's guilt and memories of Mal resurface, posing a threat to the success of the mission. Mal's projections manifest in Fischer's dreams and disrupt their progress. Additionally, Cobb's unresolved guilt interferes with his ability to create stable dream worlds, heightening the danger they face.

In the deepest dream level, Cobb confronts his projection of Mal, who tempts him to remain in the dream limbo with her indefinitely. To proceed with the mission, Cobb must confront his guilt and let go of the memory of Mal. He successfully convinces Fischer that his father loved him and did not consider him a disappointment, implanting the idea that will eventually lead Fischer to dissolve his father's energy corporation.

As the team prepares to exit the dream, they discover that Fischer's subconscious has been militarized, making their escape arduous. They encounter fierce resistance from Fischer's projections and must improvise their way out. Amidst the chaos, Cobb stays behind to confront Mal one final time, ensuring the team's escape.

Cobb confronts Mal in the dream limbo and finally accepts that she is merely a projection of his guilt. He manages to let go of her and wakes up aboard the plane, realizing that the inception has succeeded. The team reunites with Saito, who had been waiting in the dream limbo after sustaining a mortal wound in the previous level. Cobb and Saito escape the dream world and awaken on the plane, bringing the mission to a close.

Returning to the real world, Cobb passes through customs and arrives at his home in the United States. He spins his totem, a personal item used to discern whether one is in a dream or reality. The film concludes before revealing whether Cobb is still dreaming or has genuinely returned to reality.
