How a topic pack works

Pick the hours, name the topics, finish in a few weeks

No year-long commitment. You choose 5 or 10 hours on the form so we know which pack to plan.

1

Choose duration

5 hours ($120) for one tight skill, or 10 hours ($240) when two skills need work.

2

Name the topics

Hub topics: 6.RP rates, 6.NS integers, 6.EE equations, 6.G surface/volume, homework rescue, or a short test warm-up.

3

Book the hours

We schedule live 1:1 slots in your US time zone and send a short plan after the first session.

Common Grade 6 pack ideas

Topics parents usually book

You can mix these inside a 5 or 10 hour pack. Your counselor locks the sequence on the planning call.

6.RP Ratios and unit rates

Ratio language, ratio tables, and unit-rate stories tied to shopping, recipes, or sports stats.

6.NS Fraction ÷ and decimals

Divide fractions by fractions with models, then fluent multi-digit decimal operations.

6.NS Integers and rationals

Positive and negative numbers in context, number lines, and comparing rational numbers.

6.EE Expressions and equations

Write/evaluate expressions, solve one-variable equations, and check by substitution.

6.G Area, surface, volume

Triangle/polygon area, prism nets and surface area, volume with fractional edge lengths.

Homework or state-test rescue

Bring the school packet or a short Grade 6 style set. We clear stuck ratio, integer, or equation pages.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

Early foundation (~18%): ratio language that every later rate problem needs
18% of the Grade 6 year · Ratios and rates · 1 hub chapter · 3 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 6 hub syllabus)

6.RP.A Major

Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

  • 6.RP.A.1
    Ratios and ratio language

A ratio compares two quantities. Grade 6 is when your child learns to say the comparison in words and symbols, not only as a fraction that happens to look similar.

  • 6.RP.A.2
    Unit rates

A unit rate answers per one: miles per hour, price per ounce. This is the bridge from ratios to the proportional reasoning Grade 7 will lean on.

  • 6.RP.A.3
Ratio and rate problems: tables, percents, units

Tables, tape diagrams and percents turn ratio thinking into tools for shopping, recipes and unit conversions.

What mastery looks like

  • Uses ratio language correctly (for every 2 cups of flour there are 3 cups of sugar)
  • Finds a unit rate and uses it in a shopping or speed story
  • Builds a ratio table and finds a missing value without guessing

Common stumble

Treating a ratio like a single fraction to add, or mixing units mid-rate.

Parent tip: Cook or mix drinks with a written ratio card. Ask “for every… there are…” before they compute.

6.NS

The Number System

Major share (~26%): fraction ÷ fraction, fluent decimals, then integers and rational numbers
26% of the Grade 6 year · The number system · 3 hub chapters · 8 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 6 hub syllabus)

6.NS.A Major

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

  • 6.NS.A.1
    Divide fractions by fractions

Dividing fractions by fractions is a Grade 6 milestone. Models come before the keep-change-flip shortcut.

6.NS.B Major

Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

  • 6.NS.B.2
    Divide multi-digit numbers fluently

Fluent multi-digit division keeps later algebra from stalling on arithmetic. Place-value strategies still matter.

  • 6.NS.B.3
    Decimal operations fluently

The four operations with multi-digit decimals should feel steady, not lucky with the decimal point.

  • 6.NS.B.4
Greatest common factor and least common multiple

GCF and LCM are not trivia. They tidy fractions, factor expressions and solve sharing problems.

6.NS.C Major

Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

  • 6.NS.C.5
Positive and negative numbers in context

Negatives arrive with meaning: temperature below zero, debt, elevation. Context comes before rules.

  • 6.NS.C.6
Rational numbers on number lines and coordinate planes

Rational numbers live on the number line and on the full coordinate plane, including all four quadrants.

  • 6.NS.C.7
    Ordering and absolute value

Ordering and absolute value ask which number is farther from zero, not which looks bigger with a minus sign.

  • 6.NS.C.8
    Distance on the coordinate plane

Distance on the plane uses absolute value when points share a coordinate. Geometry and number sense meet.

What mastery looks like

  • Divides a fraction by a fraction and can explain with a picture or story
  • Computes multi-digit decimals fluently and finds GCF/LCM in a small set
  • Places positive and negative numbers on a number line and compares them in context (temperature, debt, elevation)

Common stumble

Keep-change-flip without meaning, or thinking negatives are “just smaller positives.”

Parent tip: Weather and bank-balance stories make negatives concrete. Ask which is colder: −3 or −8?

6.EE

Expressions and Equations

Largest Grade 6 share (~28%): expressions, one-variable equations, dependent/independent variables
28% of the Grade 6 year · Expressions and equations · 3 hub chapters · 9 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 6 hub syllabus)

6.EE.A Major

Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

  • 6.EE.A.1
    Whole-number exponents

Whole-number exponents are repeated multiplication written cleanly. 2^5 is not 2 × 5.

  • 6.EE.A.2
    Write, read and evaluate expressions

Write, read and evaluate expressions with variables. Substituting a value carefully is a Grade 6 habit.

  • 6.EE.A.3
    Equivalent expressions using properties

Properties make equivalent expressions. Distributing and combining like terms start here, gently.

  • 6.EE.A.4
    Identify equivalent expressions

Two expressions are equivalent when they name the same quantity for every value. This idea feeds algebra.

6.EE.B Major

Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

  • 6.EE.B.5
    What solving an equation means

Solving means finding which values make an equation true. Guess-and-check with understanding beats magic steps.

  • 6.EE.B.6
    Variables in expressions

A letter stands for a number in a story. Choosing the variable and writing the expression is the hard part.

  • 6.EE.B.7
    Solve one-step equations

One-step equations with positive numbers: add, subtract, multiply or divide to isolate the variable.

  • 6.EE.B.8
    Inequalities

Inequalities describe a set of solutions on a number line, not one answer. That shift surprises many students.

6.EE.C Major

Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

  • 6.EE.C.9
    Dependent and independent variables

Independent and dependent variables: as one changes, the other responds. Tables and graphs tell the story.

What mastery looks like

  • Writes and evaluates expressions with whole-number exponents and variables
  • Solves a one-variable equation and checks by substitution
  • Names dependent vs independent variables in a simple table or graph story

Common stumble

Guess-and-check only, or treating the equal sign as “write the answer” instead of balance.

Parent tip: Have them read an equation aloud as a balance. Substitute the solution back every time.

6.G

Geometry

Area, surface area, and volume with fractional edges (~14%)
14% of the Grade 6 year · Area, surface, volume · 1 hub chapter · 4 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 6 hub syllabus)

6.G.A Major

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

  • 6.G.A.1
    Area of triangles and polygons

Area of triangles and special polygons uses composition and the triangle formula with understanding.

  • 6.G.A.2
    Volume with fractional edge lengths

Volume with fractional edge lengths extends Grade 5 packing. Unit cubes can be fractional now.

  • 6.G.A.3
    Polygons on the coordinate plane

Polygons drawn on the coordinate plane use distance and absolute value to find side lengths and area.

  • 6.G.A.4
    Nets and surface area

Nets unfold a solid so surface area becomes area of faces you can see flat.

What mastery looks like

  • Finds area of triangles and special quadrilaterals, composing polygons when needed
  • Finds volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths
  • Finds surface area from a net of a prism

Common stumble

Using base × height for triangles without the 1/2, or mixing area units with volume units.

Parent tip: Cut paper nets once. Seeing faces before the formula prevents surface-area mix-ups.

6.SP

Statistics and Probability

Statistics close (~14%): statistical questions, distributions, and summary displays
14% of the Grade 6 year · Statistics · 2 hub chapters · 5 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 6 hub syllabus)

6.SP.A Major

Develop understanding of statistical variability.

  • 6.SP.A.1
    Statistical questions

A statistical question expects variability in the answers. How old are students in this class is statistical; how old is Sam is not.

  • 6.SP.A.2
    Distributions: center, spread and shape

Distributions have center, spread and shape. Your child describes a data set, not only picks a favorite number.

  • 6.SP.A.3
    Measures of center and variability

Mean, median and measures of variability each answer a different question about the data.

6.SP.B Major

Summarize and describe distributions.

  • 6.SP.B.4
Dot plots, histograms and box plots

Dot plots, histograms and box plots display the same data with different strengths.

  • 6.SP.B.5
    Summarize data sets

Summarizing a data set means reporting number of observations, center, spread and what the context allows you to say.

What mastery looks like

  • Tells a statistical question from a yes/no fact question
  • Describes a distribution with center, spread, and shape in plain words
  • Builds or reads a dot plot, histogram, or box plot and answers a comparison question

Common stumble

Reporting only the mean when the shape is skewed, or ignoring outliers in talk.

Parent tip: Collect a tiny class data set (hours of sleep, scores). Ask what the graph shows before any formula.
