How a Grade 4 group class actually runs

Parents usually want three answers: how many kids share the slot, whether every child still speaks, and how you will know it is working.

  • Warm-up so the whole batch revisits last week’s weak spot
  • New teaching with visuals, then shared guided practice
  • Every student answers at least once each class
  • Weekly parent note: topics, accuracy, home practice

Early year foundation, then woven into every word-problem week
18% of the Grade 4 year · Multiply, compare, factors · 3 hub chapters · 5 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 4 hub syllabus)

4.OA.A Major

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.

  • 4.OA.A.1
    Multiplication as comparison

    Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5.

  • 4.OA.A.2
    Multiplicative comparison word problems

Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent.

  • 4.OA.A.3
    Multi-step word problems with remainders

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be.

4.OA.B Major

Gain familiarity with factors and multiples.

  • 4.OA.B.4
Factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers

Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100.

4.OA.C Major

Generate and analyze patterns.

  • 4.OA.C.5
    Number and shape patterns

  • Solves multi-step whole-number stories and can explain what a remainder means
  • Lists factor pairs for numbers to 100 and names primes vs composites in a small set

Common stumble

Treating every × story as equal groups, or ignoring the remainder in a real-world answer.

Parent tip: Ask “how many times as many?” with real amounts (snacks, scores, chores). Comparison language is the Grade 4 shift from Grade 3 equal groups.

4.NBT

Number and Operations in Base Ten

Hub Q1 focus (Aug-Oct): place value and multi-digit multiply, then division
22% of the Grade 4 year · Multi-digit place value · 2 hub chapters · 6 standards

  • 4.NBT.B.6
Divide up to 4 digits by 1 digit

Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of.

What mastery looks like

  • Reads and compares numbers to 1,000,000 and explains that each place is ten times the next
  • Multiplies up to 4 digits by 1 digit and 2 digits by 2 digits with an area model or partial products they can explain
  • Finds whole-number quotients and remainders with up to 4-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors

Common stumble

Memorizing algorithm steps without knowing what each digit is worth.

Parent tip: Have them read big numbers on receipts and headlines aloud in place-value language before they compute.

4.NF

Number and Operations - Fractions

Hub Q2-Q3 (Nov-Mar): largest share of the Grade 4 year (~32%)
32% of the Grade 4 year · Fraction equivalence and ops · 3 hub chapters · 7 standards

Chapters and standards (from the Grade 4 hub syllabus)

4.NF.A Major

Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

Grade 4 expectations in this domain are limited to fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100.

  • 4.NF.A.1
    Why equivalent fractions are equal

Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ.

  • 4.NF.A.2
    Compare fractions with different denominators

Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark.

  • 4.NF.C.6
Decimal notation for tenths and hundredths

Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100.

  • 4.NF.C.7
    Compare decimals to hundredths

Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size.

What mastery looks like

  • Explains why 1/2 = 2/4 with a visual model, not only a cross-multiply trick
  • Compares fractions with unlike denominators; adds/subtracts like-denominator fractions and mixed numbers within Grade 4 limits
  • Writes tenths and hundredths as decimals and as fractions, and compares decimals to hundredths

Common stumble

Adding numerators and denominators, treating bigger denominators as bigger fractions, or thinking 0.25 > 0.3 because 25 > 3.

Parent tip: Keep the whole the same size when you compare. Grade 4 denominators stay in {2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,100}.

4.MD

Measurement and Data

Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement: - An angle is measured.

  • 4.MD.C.6
Measure and draw angles with a protractor

Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor.

  • 4.MD.C.7
    Add angle measures

    Recognize angle measure as additive.

What mastery looks like

  • Converts units within one system and solves distance, time, money, and volume stories
  • Applies rectangle area and perimeter formulas in real problems
  • Builds line plots with fractional data; measures angles in degrees with a protractor and adds angle measures

Common stumble

Guessing angle size by how long the rays look, not by the turn; mixing unit systems mid-problem.

Parent tip: Kitchen measures and a cheap protractor make 4.MD concrete. Estimate the angle first, then check.

4.G

Geometry

Hub Q4 with angles (Apr-May)
10% of the Grade 4 year · Lines, angles, symmetry · 1 hub chapter · 3 standards

Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts.

What mastery looks like

  • Draws and names points, lines, rays, and right/acute/obtuse angles
  • Identifies parallel and perpendicular lines and classifies shapes by those attributes
  • Finds and draws a line of symmetry on a two-dimensional figure

Common stumble

Calling any slanted lines “perpendicular,” or confusing side length with angle size.

Parent tip: Window frames, doors, and street maps are full of parallel and perpendicular lines. Spot them before naming the vocabulary.
