Elasticity โข Plasticity โข Elastic limitElasticity is the property by which a body regains original shape and size after removal of deforming force, while plasticity refers to failure to recover completely. Elastic limit is the maximum deforming force up to which recovery still occurs.
- Perfectly elastic and perfectly plastic bodies are limiting ideals; real materials lie between them.
- Elastic fatigue is the temporary loss of elastic behaviour under repeated alternating deformation.

Restoring force per areaStress is the internal restoring force per unit area developed in a deformed body, numerically written as $F/A$. It has the same dimensions as pressure, but stress may be normal or tangential depending on how the force acts.
- Normal stress is produced by force perpendicular to the surface and includes tensile and compressive cases.
- Bulk stress changes volume without changing shape and is the only relevant stress form in fluids.
- Shear stress changes shape while volume remains unchanged and is meaningful for solids.
3) Strain
Relative deformationStrain is the ratio of change in configuration to original configuration, so it is dimensionless. Depending on the deformation, strain may be linear, volumetric, or shearing.
- Linear strain is change in length divided by original length.
- Volumetric strain is change in volume divided by original volume.
- Shearing strain is the angular displacement in radians and for small angles is written as $x/L$.
