Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is an engineering entrance exam organized by the National Testing Agency. With good JEE Ranks, students take admissions in reputed engineering colleges in India. Its syllabus consists of three subjects - Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Equal weight age is given to all three subjects.
Out of these, Physics always turns out to be more tough & challenging. Each student can score a maximum of 120 marks in each subject (Phy + Chem + Maths) totaling to 420 in JEE Paper 1. These 120 marks are in the form of 30 questions. Each question is credited with +4 for the right answer. Every wrong answer fetches you a -1. So, make sure not to make vague guesses as this will only reduce your score by piling up negative marks.
The reason JEE physics is difficult is because of the pattern of questioning. A lot of students memorize all the concepts but have very little knowledge of how to apply those concepts. Most questions in physics are problem-based / numerical. The candidate can fix the concepts with the application to solve these types of questions. Mechanics is a vast subject that deals all about motion, movement and rest. It contributes about 36 per cent of the total weight age in JEE Physics. The concepts in these topics are easy to understand with but the candidate should be able to identify the type of problem asked and solve accordingly. Candidate must be conceptually clear in all areas under this topic.
Current Electricity and EMI (Easy):
Its weight age is around 20% of total marks in JEE physics. It mainly deals with current electricity, magnetic induction and alternating current. Semiconductor is a major portion under this topic. Students can fare well easily, as it mainly involves the calculation of resistance or conductance. Questions on the topic ‘logic gates’ from this chapter are the easiest to score. A few conceptual questions & derivations are asked here, hence thorough understanding of concepts can enable the candidate to fetch marks in the theoretical questions as well.
Electrostatics and Magnetism (Moderate difficulty):
This chapter deals with electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic induction, electric potential, etc., This stands third in the weight age table. It contributes 17 per cent to the total marks in JEE Physics. This covers a lot of conceptual aspects that are a bit difficult to understand. Mere subject knowledge can also help you score marks in this chapter. Particularly, the magnetism portion of this topic is easier to solve and understand. The problems are mostly directly asked without many complications and hence can be solved with moderate level difficulty.
Optics and Modern Physics (Easy):
Optics contributes about 17 per cent to the total score in physics. The topics covered in this also include radioactivity, nuclear reactions, De-Broglie effect etc. Conceptual questions are also asked here.The principles of light, wave optics are comparatively easy to understand and solve. With thorough practice, a candidate can crack these questions with absolute ease.
Heat and thermodynamics (Difficult):
Heat and thermodynamics deal mainly with energy production and release. The three topics under this are Thermal properties, Thermodynamics and the kinetic theory of gases. It has a weight age of about 9 per cent of the total scores in JEE Physics. Despite of having clear conceptual knowledge, applications & numerical questions turn out to be tough to solve. Hence considered a difficult topic in JEE Physics.
Because JEE is mainly based on syllabus of NCERT books, students must study based on the same. They must practice using various reference books but must tally it with previous years JEE papers & NCERT current year syllabus. A strong base can help you fine-tune yourself for the application-oriented questions. Prepare according to the weight age & difficulty level of JEE Physics. Make sure you know the basics from all the topics. Prepare a list of formulas, derivations and experiments as mentioned in the JEE Physics syllabus.
