Scholarships for admissions of Foreign Students in Indian Universities:
Scholarships encourage students to pursue educational courses. They are like an incentive for students’ extraordinary performance in studies. To encourage such students, the government of India encourages students from abroad to pursue undergraduate Engineering courses in premier Indian Institutes like IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFIs, SPAs & a many more.
Note: According to the latest update from DASA, from session 2021-22 onwards, JEE Mains Rank is mandatory for NRI/ PIO/ OCI/ FN Students to be eligible for DASA & CIWG Schemes. Hence, 2020-21 will be the last year when SAT 2 scores will be considered for DASA/CIWG Scheme.
This article elaborates the various types of scholarships that the international/foreign students (FN =Foreign Nationals) benefit from:
- General Scholarship Scheme (GSS)
- Under GSS, the students from countries belonging to certain Asian, African and Latin American countries are awarded a scholarship to pursue studies in India in undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral in engineering.
- The scholarship procedures are accepted only through the Indian Missions overseas & are given to only engineering and art students.
- The scholarships provided by ICCR (Indian Council of cultural research) are handled on behalf of the Ministry of external affairs, India.
Assistance: For undergraduate students studying under the list of universities, as per the norms of the ICCR, will receive a monthly stipend of 5500 Indian rupees. If the hostel is not allowed. house rent allowance (HRA) will also be provided depending upon the approval by ICCR.
- Bangladesh scholarship scheme
- The Bangladesh scholarship scheme is an initiative by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). It is a medium to build relations between the Indian and Bangladeshi students.
- Financial support for students who are Bangladeshi nationals is assisted in this scheme.
- Students must apply to have 60% marks in the passing examination or a CGPA of 3 out of 5. Over 3000 scholarships have been awarded to students right from its inception.
- Commonwealth scholarship scheme (ICCR)
- This scheme was initiated by the ICCR for improving the standards and resources and facilities for students opting to study in Indian universities.
- The scholarship is focussed for students from the Commonwealth countries to pursue courses in engineering at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels except for medicine and dentistry.
- The students who are from Bangladesh, Canada, Guyana, Maldives, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom are entitled to avail the scholarship.
- MekongGanga co-operation scholarship scheme
- ICCR offers another scholarship to build cultural relations among the Mekong- Ganga co-operation countries. This is in relation to the ministry of external affairs, India.
- Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam fall under the Mekong Ganga scholarship scheme.
- Under this, students belonging to the Mekong-Ganga member countries are allotted a set of 50 seats, Viz., each member country is allotted 10 seats. This scheme was launched in the 5th meeting of the cooperation in the year 2007.
- Afghan scholarship scheme
- The Afghan scholarship was started in the year 2005 to enhance the relationship between Afghan and India after the then prime minister’s visit. A total of 500 scholarships were promised by the Indian government for students who wish to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in Indian Universities. This was raised to 1000 scholarship per year from the academic year 2012-2013 administered by the Ministry of External Affairs, India.
- The agency that is nodal to administer the scholarships in Afghanistan is a ministry of higher education. Together the scholarships are offered to rightful meritorious students.
- Africa scholarship scheme -MEA
- The Africa scholarship scheme was launched by the government of India in the year 2008 by the then prime minister of India & to provide the meritorious students from African countries to take part in education programmes offered by various Indian Universities.
- This scholarship is administered by the ICCR in which 900 scholarships are offered to around 56 African countries.
- A student is expected to be knowledgeable in English and medically fit to take up the coursse.
- These are provided only through the administration of India mission overseas.
- Aid to Bhutan, Maldives and Mongolia
- The council of Cultural Relations, on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs, offers a scholarship for the students belonging to Bhutan, Maldives and Mongolia.
- Under this scheme, 20 students from each country are offered a scholarship to pursue professional courses in India.
- 20 scholarships for Bhutan is provided only for undergraduate courses whereas the other scholarships are provided for engineering courses of UG, PG and PhD excluding courses taken up for medicine and dentistry.
- Special scholarships for Sri Lanka
- On behalf of the Indian Council of cultural relations and ministry of external affairs, 150 scholarships are offered to Sri Lankan students under various sub schemes.
- These sub schemes and allotments of seats for each case are:
- Nehru memorial scholarship scheme by ICCR under which 60 slots are allotted.
- Nehru memorial scholarships awarded by the ministry of external affairs (MEA) under which 60 slots are allotted only for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering.
- Maulana Azad scholarship administered by MEA providing 50 slots for students from Sri Lanka to pursue post-graduation courses in agriculture and engineering.
- Rajiv Gandhi scholarship scheme offered by the ministry of external affairs, offering 25 students to pursue undergraduate courses in the IT field.
International students can also apply under the DASA scheme and the various other scholarships that are open to FN/ NRI/ PIO/ OCI Students to study in the premier institutes of India. Just be sure to be confirm about which category you fall into. Its good to utilise such opportunities that open the door to a better career for undergraduate studies.
