NRI Quota & Govt. Engineering Colleges in India
Are you an NRI aiming to relocate to India from UAE / Saudi Arabia / Oman / Qatar / Bahrain / Kuwait in order to pursue B.E / B.Arch from the top-tier Engineering Colleges of India??
If so, this article meets your requirements.
It is apparent that most NRI Students & Parents could have heard about the NRI Quota in Engineering Colleges, but they don’t know what it exactly is. We’re here to guide you through the NRI Quota and the list of Govt. Engineering Colleges that fall under it.
Note: According to the latest update from DASA, from session 2021-22 onwards, JEE Mains Rank is to be mandatory for NRI/PIO/OCI Students to be eligible for DASA & CIWG Schemes. Hence, 2020-21 will be the last year when SAT 2 scores will be considered for engineering admissions under DASA/CIWG Scheme.
Let’s start with IITs first:
JEE test is the mandatory test for all the NRI students who are aiming to get admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
Here’s the list of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) in India:
It may seem like a dream but, the harsh reality is that you’ve to compete with the Indian students appearing for the JEE as there’s no specific quota available for NRIs. And JEE Advanced is counted among one of the toughest Engineering Entrance Exams in the world.
NITs, CFTIs, IIITs & SPAs:
DASA Scheme is the only option for NRIs to get admission in National Institute of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs), School of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).
What’s DASA Scheme?
DASA stands for Direct Admission for Students Abroad.
This scheme was launched by MHRD, India for students willing to enroll for UG Engineering Courses (Under Graduates) of NRIs, PIO, OCI category who are residing abroad (apart from India).
This scheme is applicable for you if you’re aiming to have Bachelor’s degree from Engineering/Architecture streams.
Here’s the list of DASA participating colleges:
Being an NRI, you can get into these premier engineering colleges through DASA scheme.
You have to appear for the 3 SAT Subject Tests – Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions will be allotted on the merit basis.

There is one more scheme called CIWG, which is the subset of DASA.
CIWG stands for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf.
CIWG scheme is applicable for the students who are residing in the below-mentioned Gulf countries:
United Arab Emirates
Pros of CIWG:
Gulf Quota: One-Third seats are allotted to Gulf Quota/CIWG scheme from DASA scheme.
Cost Effective: If you hail from a Gulf based country, you will need to pay just 6 lakh to accomplish the 8 semesters. But, a DASA student pays 22 lakh to finish the same graduation from DASA participating colleges.
Competition: Competition for CIWG scheme is very huge. So, you have to work super hard to get admission in these prestigious engineering colleges.
Check the CIWG Scheme for more in detail.
State Level Govt. Colleges:
It’s pretty sure that NRIs will also get chance to on-board the Govt. colleges by appearing for the State Level Engineering entrance tests like EAMCET, TS EAMCET, K CET etc.
We’ll update the list of Govt. engineering colleges state-wise soon.
