Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to numerous engineering colleges in India. It constitutes of two examinations - JEE Main and the JEE Advanced.
JEE Main is a computer-based online test conducted by National Testing Agency for students wishing to pursue undergraduate courses in top engineering institutes in India. It is the first stage of the IIT Joint Entrance Exam.

The examination (JEE Main) is taken in two sessions and candidates can take the exam in the month of January or in April.
The candidates can further choose to appear for one exam or both the exams. The best of two NTA scores will be considered by the exam conducting authority in preparing the ranks/merit list.
More significantly, students are given admission to IITs, CFITs, NITs, and other technical institutes based on the marks obtained in JEE Main. Also, the top 2,50,000 students from JEE Main would qualify to appear for JEE Advanced.
Who conducts JEE Exam?
Until 2018, JEE-Main was on the first week of April by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It was held both on paper and electronically. From 2019 it is conducted by the NTA, twice a year, and online only.

Types of JEE Exams
NTA conducts two types of JEE, JEE Main & JEE advanced.
JEE Main
JEE Main is for those candidates who want to get into BE or B.Tech courses in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) and engineering colleges of the participating states.
The JEE Main is also the eligibility test that lets students give the JEE Advanced exam which eventually gets you admission in either the IITs or the Indian School of Mines (ISM).
JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced, is strictly paper-based. The candidates must sit for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in this exam to get admission into engineering colleges.
For the candidates who want to be admitted into architectural courses that IITs offer, the student should clear both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in the exam and then sit for the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) which seven zonal IITs conduct.
The final choice of the candidates is on the basis of the All India Rank secured by them in the JEE Advanced exam since there is no different ranking system for the AAT.
When is JEE Main conducted?
JEE Main January attempt was conducted by NTA from January 6 to 9, 2020. Candidates can check the JEE Main schedule 2020 in the article.
When is JEE Advanced is conducted?
The JEE Main exam will be conducted from 18 to 23 July 2020. The JEE Advanced paper will be held in August.(This has now been subjected to further Postponement, as the COVID 19 crisis is still going on) The NEET will be held on 26th July 2020.
A decision regarding the pending CBSE board exams for classes 10 and 12 will be made soon.
